Jess (42), a single car mechanic who lives with her mother, Marion, suspects her sister in law Lori (33), is having an affair. Her fragile brother Matt (38), a semiotics professor (who doesn’t pick up the signs) has no idea. Lori, an amateur singer, acts innocent but Jess and Marion scrutinize her, check up on her story, and confront her. Under their pressure Lori confesses she’s pregnant and with Matt’s best friend’s (Sean) kid. It blows up. Jess snaps, chokes Lori. Matt, depressed, anxious, attempts suicide. Jess is shaken by Matt’s attempt on his life. She feels betrayed, affronted Matt would do that to her. Making matters worse Marion and Matt both act as if nothing happened. They want to move on. But Jess can’t move on. She’s stuck. It’s as if her world’s been shaken up, and she can’t make sense of it. At Marion’s suggestion, Jess (who’s not a therapy kind of person) sees Matt’s therapist Sara (45). Initially, Jess scolds Sara, blows her off, but she settles down, lets her guard down, and confides to Sara. Listens to Sara. And comes to a new understanding of mental illness and her brother’s actions. Five months later Lori is back living with her mother Carol. Seven months in to an uneasy pregnancy, Lori rediscovers her feelings for Matt. She attempts a reconciliation. Matt, coming out of a depression, is eager as well. Yet Jess, who now dates co-worker Megan (36), gives Matt bad advice and it goes sideways. Marion does damage control, plots with Carol to get Lori and Matt back together. Matt accuses Jess of meddling. Jess erupts, goes off on Matt, yet this inadvertently ignites him. Finally, Matt shows up unannounced at Lori’s show, and guitar in hand, walks on stage. Lori hauls Matt off, scolds him. Yet Matt throws it back in her face, and in that moment Lori sees he man she first fell for. They finish the show, back together. Director’s Statement I wanted to make a film about love and suicide. Yet make it accessible, not some heavy thing. I chose the romantic comedy/romantic drama genre for this reason. For me, theme is a big deal, and the theme of Kingsway is about the nature and fragility of familial and intimate relationships. I wanted every scene to refer to this in some way. The story follows the love lives of a contemporary middle class single parent family, the Horvat’s: Marion 65, she wants love but is more focused on keeping the status quo, keeping her family together; Jessica 42, an alpha female, middle aged and stuck, needs to prove her womanhood; Matt 38, a semiotics professor, wants to overcome a deficiency in order to save his marriage. In terms of tone, I wanted a lived experience sense to it. That is, I wanted to concentrate on how suicide attempts affect family members. I wanted a sense that suicide is something any family could go through. I chose a cinematic style that wasn’t showy and focused on the performances. The actors and I workshopped the script and their input and ideas added a layer of authenticity that I couldn’t have achieved by myself. - Bruce Sweeney Bruce Sweeney (director/producer) Bruce Sweeney was born in Sarnia, Ontario. • Press Kit Falling Angels
Falling Angels A film by Scott Smith Based on the novel by Barbara Gowdy With Miranda Richardson Callum Keith Rennie Katherine Isabelle RT : 101 minutes 1 Short Synopsis It is 1969 and seventeen year old Lou Field and her sisters are ready for change. Tired of enduring kiddie games to humour a Dad desperate for the occasional shred of family normalcy, the Field house is a place where their Mom’s semi-catatonic state is the result of a tragic event years before they were born. But as the autumn unfolds, life is about to take a turn. This is the year that Lou and her sisters are torn between the lure of the world outside and the claustrophobic world of the Field house that can no longer contain the girls’ restless adolescence. A story of a calamitous family trying to function, Falling Angels is a story populated by beautiful youthful rebels and ill-equipped parents coping with the draw of a world in turmoil beyond the boundaries of home and a manicured lawn. 2 Long Synopsis Treading the fine line between adolescence and adulthood, the Field sisters have all but declared war on their domineering father. Though Jim Field (Genie and Gemini winner Callum Keith Rennie ) runs the family house like a military camp, it’s the three teenaged daughters who really run the show and baby-sit their fragile mother Mary, (Two-time Oscar ® nominee Miranda Richardson) as she quietly sits on the couch and quells her anxiety with whiskey. It’s 1969 and beneath suburbia’s veneer of manicured lawns and rows of bungalows, the world faces explosive social change.

  • Last Night (1998)
Last Night (1998) Set in Toronto at an unknown date, Last Night tells the story of how a variety of intersecting characters spend their final evening on Earth. It seems the world is to end at midnight (Eastern Standard Time ) as the result of a calamity that is not explained, but which has been expected for several months. There are several scenes of an ominously glowing sun, which gets progressively larger and brighter even into the night. Some people in the film choose to spend their last evening alone, others with loved ones, others in prayer, others in public mayhem, and still others at raucous festivities. The owner of a power company Duncan (David Cronenberg ) spends the majority of his final day calling up every single one of his customers to reassure them that their heating gas will be kept on until the very end. Meanwhile, his wife Sandra (Sandra Oh ) prepares to fulfill their suicide pact when she becomes stranded with a depressed widower Patrick (Don McKellar ) preparing to die while listening to music and drinking wine on his roof, surrounded by mementoes of his recently deceased wife. The widower's best friend Craig (Callum Keith Rennie ) participates in a nearly non- stop sex marathon as he attempts to fulfill every fantasy he has ever had, at one point awkwardly asking Patrick to join him. Sarah Polley appears as Patrick's sister Jennifer; their family chooses to have a final meal together although he leaves prematurely to seek his own finale. Jackie Burroughs makes an appearance as an apparently mentally disturbed woman who jogs around announcing how much time is left before the end.

  • WRITER's GUIDE 2004 Season 3
WRITER’S GUIDE 2004 Season 3 Created for Television by Michael Piller & Shawn Piller Based on characters from the Stephen King novel Copyright © 2004 Lions Gate Television. All rights reserved. No portion of this document may be performed, published, sold or distributed by any means, or quoted or published in any medium, including on any web site, without prior written consent. Disposal of this script copy does not alter any of the restrictions set forth above. WRITER’S GUIDE 2004 Season 3 INTRODUCTION A few to-dos before you come in to pitch. 1. Watch the pilot. 2. Read the book by Stephen King. 3. Watch the episode “Destiny”, our first season cliffhanger. 4. Watch Frank Capra’s Meet John Doe. 5. Watch Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. Some don’ts: 1. Although Johnny should help someone in most every story, we don’t want this to become “Touched by an Angel”. We must find interesting, unique and fresh ways to tell stories. No preaching please. Find the unexpected twist. 2. Don’t pitch story arcs that run multiple episodes. What we need from you are self-contained stories. 3. We do not want to hear any pitches based on previously seen material -- whether film or television. Those kinds of story ideas occur to everybody -- including The Dead Zone staff. Johnny Smith is a fresh and unusual character, never before seen on television. We want fresh and unusual story concepts that likewise have not been seen on television. If it can be said of an idea "Star Trek did that" -- or "Buffy" or "The X-Files" or "Twilight Zone" -- then that is not an idea you should pitch.

  • St. Mary's Episcopal School BRADLEY ’74 22 41 N
SUMMER 2018 St.Mary’sTHE MAGAZINE OF ST. MARY’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL i A LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL I believe in St. Mary's mission and never more so than when the seniors graduate. At Commencement, I am always struck by the power of each student reaching her individual potential. Some of the graduates, over the course of as many as 15 years at St. Mary's, encountered opportunities and experiences that we designed for them and in which they thrived. Others found in our environment the inspiration to create their own opportunities. Each girl will matriculate in August with brand new paths to explore. This school inspires students and adults alike, as you will read in the pages that follow. I believe in our mission of enabling and encouraging girls to reach their individual potential, because our community is strongest when each student discovers her own God-given talents, as well as the seasons in which they flourish. Fortunately, our mission doesn’t predict how long this discovery takes! Our alumnae Chapel speakers often reflect on the seeds planted here that only later in college or adult life come to fruition. Over the course of traveling and visiting alumnae on both coasts (and in-between) this year, I had a recurring observation that brought this experience to life. During every visit, I was impressed by each woman's talent and purpose. They were philanthropists, authors, mothers, CEOs, and inventors. Their range of personality and perspective was joined by a similar and strong sense of identity and intention.

Suddenly the power goes out; no one knows why. No electricity, no gasoline. Their solar power system isn’t working. Over the following days, the radio reports a thousand theories: technical breakdowns, terrorism, disease and uncontrolled violence across the continent. Then, one day, the radio stops broadcasting. Absolute silence. Step by ominous step, everything that Nell, a would-be academic, and Eva, a hard working contemporary dancer, have come to rely on is stripped away: parental protection, information, food, safety, friends, lovers, music -- all gone. They are faced with a world where rumor is the only guide, trust is a scarce commodity, gas is king and loneliness is excruciating. To battle starvation, invasion and despair, Nell and Eva fall deeper into a primitive life that tests their endurance and bond. Ultimately, the sisters must work together to survive and learn to discover what the earth will provide.
