I did the major part of the measurements and evaluation and I also constructed the optical access engine. I presented the paper at the SAE Meeting in Detroit, USA 1997. 4. Ekenberg, M, Johansson, B. ’’Laser Sheet Droplet Concentration Measurements in a High Speed Two-Stroke Engine”, SAE Paper 972123.1 did all the measurements and the major part of the evaluation. I presented the paper at the "Small Engine Technology Conference ” in Yokohama, Japan in 1997. 5. Andersson, 0, Juhlin, G, Ekenberg, M, Johansson, B, Alden, M. ’’Crank Angle Resolved HC-Detection Using LIE in the Exhausts of Small Two-Stroke Engines Running at High Engine Speed”, SAE Paper 961927. I took part in the LIE measurements, but Andersson and Juhlin made the major part of the LIE measurements and evaluations. The LDV measurements presented in that paper were performed and evaluated by me. The paper was presented by Oivind Andersson at the “Fuels and Lubricants” meeting in San Antonio, USA in 1996. l Summary The major problem with the carburetted two-stroke engine is the short-circuiting of fuel that occurs during the scavenging phase. This leads to large emissions of unbumed hydrocarbons. The object of this thesis has been to map the flow behaviour in the cylinder during the scavenging phase, and to detect differences between different cylinder designs. The measurement techniques used has been Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and Laser Sheet Droplet Illumination (LSDI). Of these measurement methods, LDV and LSDI has been used inside the cylinder. LIF was used outside the exhaust port. All measurements were performed in engines running at their rated speeds, 9000 rpm for three of the designs and 5800 rpm for one design. All engines were run at full load with combustion. The LDV measurements inside the cylinder show that cylinders with cup handle transfer channels have a flow pattern inside the cylinder that gives less short-circuiting, and hence less emissions of hydrocarbons, than the cylinder with open transfer channels has. The LIF measurements outside the exhaust port show that the HC emissions that are caused by short-circuiting comes earlier in the scavenging phase for the cylinder with open transfer channels than is the case for the cylinders with cup handle transfer channels. The LSDI measurements in the cylinder give the transfer channel flow angle, for the cylinders with cup handle transfer channels. For the cylinder with open transfer channels, the results are not as useful; fuel droplet vaporisation close to the exhaust port ruins the results. 11 Table of contents 1 The concept with an effective loop scavenging via an extended inlet valve holds promise for engines at low- to medium-rotational speeds for typical designs of conventional 4-stroke cylinder heads. Calculations, flow simulations, and visualizations of experimental flows in relevant geometries and time scales indicate feasibility, followed by a small engine demonstration. Based on presumably long-forgotten and outdated patents, and the central topic of this contribution, an additional jockey rides on the inlet valve’s disk (facing away from the combustion chamber) and reshapes the in-cylinder flow into a reverted tumble. A quick gas exchange with a well-suppressed shortcut into the open exhaust is approached. For overall mechanical efficiency, the required charge pressure for scavenging is of paramount importance due to the short scavenging time and the intake’s reduced cross-section. Herein, still acceptable charging pressures are reported for scavenging periods equivalent to low or medium rotational speeds, as characteristic for heavy-duty applications. Using widely available components (charger, direct injection, variable camshaft angles) an increased engine efficiency is suggested due to the 2-stroke’s downsizing effect (relatively less internal friction as well as the promise of more torque and a decreased size).

Grech**, M. Chircop***, J. P. Azzopardi**** Abstract: The aim of this work was to analyze turbocharging for a Kawasaki 600cc motorcycle engine using Ricardo WAVE® and the implementation of the turbocharger based on the findings of the engine simulations. The simulations showed that for the purposes of a FSAE® car, the Kawasaki 600cc engine should be equipped with the Pulse System Turbocharging (PST) rather than Constant Pressure Turbocharging (CPT). The turbocharger simulated and used was a Honeywell GT15V variable geometry unit. The optimum compression ratio found for the PST setup was 7. Implementation on the Kawasaki engine was done by placing a decompression plate between the cylinder block and crankcase. Experiments were also conducted on alternative cylinder head gasket designs. The engine was tested on a waterbrake dynamometer and using a programmable ECU. The turbocharger vane mechanism showed to highly effect the engine response and turbocharger spool up time. A cam sensor was integrated into the engine to run the electronic engine control in fully sequential mode. A charge air cooler was implemented to provide consistent air temperature even in the boosted operation during dynamometer testing. The major benefit of gasoline direct injection is that fuel is introduced into the cylinder after transfer ports have closed. With traditional two-stroke engines, the time available for fuel to enter the cylinder is fixed based on the geometry of the transfer ports, resulting in a shorter fuel delivery window, allowing fuel to short-circuit unburned out the exhaust, and ultimately limiting the amount of fuel that can be trapped in the cylinder.

Its 2007 and although there have been huge technological changes the basics are still the basics. There is a huge interest in vintage snowmobiles and their “simple” two stroke power plants of yesteryear. There is a wealth of knowledge contained in this manual. Let’s journey back to 1973 and read the book that was the two stroke bible of that era. Decades have passed since I hung around with John and Jim. John and I worked for the same corporation and I found a 500 triple Kawasaki for him at a reasonable price. He converted it into a drag bike, modified the engine completely and added mikuni carbs and tuned pipes. John borrowed Jim’s copy of the ‘Two Stoke Tuner’s Handbook” and used it and tips from “Fast by Gast” to create one fast bike. John kept his 500 until he retired and moved to the coast in 2005. The whereabouts of Wild Jim, his 750 Kawasaki drag bike and the only copy of ‘Two Stoke Tuner’s Handbook” that I have ever seen is a complete mystery. I recently acquired a 1980 Polaris TXL and am digging into the inner workings of the engine. I wanted a copy of this manual but wasn’t willing to wait for a copy to show up on EBay. Happily, a search of the internet finally hit on a Word version of the manual.

Modeling Scavenging for a Hydraulic Free-Piston Engine Abstract The hydraulic free-piston engine at the University of Minnesota offers a solution to improve the hydraulic efficiency andeduce r emission output of off-road vehicles. We developed a MATLAB Simulink model to track the pressure, temperature, and mass profile of the fuel within the cylinder during operation. By varying different initial conditions of our model, we found that a higher intake manifold pressure and larger bottom dead center location results in higher scavenging efficiency. These results can be used to improve the controller of this engine and better maintain stable operation.     For a 2 stroke engine the tuned pipe is the section of the exhaust system that begins at the exhaust port and ends at the end of the converging section. A tuned pipe is made of between 3 and 4 characteristic sections depending on the desired effect. The figure below depicts cross sections for 3 typical configurations of tuned pipes as well as a straight pipe: The purpose of straight and tuned pipes is to utilize the pressure waves originating from the exhaust port to assist the breathing of the engine. This is achieved by designing the pipe in such a way that positive and negative reflected waves arrive back at the exhaust port at an instant when a low or high pressure is desired. This is beneficial for two stroke engines because unlike four stroke engines, they do not have dedicated intake and exhaust strokes and valves. Furthermore; abbreviations will help as well: . By selecting the appropriate length of the pipe, the reflected rarefaction wave arrives at the exhaust port just as the transfer port opens thus assisting the flow of fresh mixture into the cylinder, and exhaust gases out of the cylinder.

The exhaust system specifically designed for the engine 2008 Honda CBR 600RR PC40, utilizes literatures on pressure wave propagation in ducts, reflection and transmission of incident pressure wave due to area discontinuity and impedance mismatch and driving point impedance of finite ducts, taking into account sensitive parameters such as temperature gradients which influence speed of propagation of wave and gas momentum variation, in order to determine the optimum dimensions of each exhaust system component, along with engine noise reduction without generation of back-pressure. Ricardo’s one-dimensional engine simulation software – WAVE has been used to simulate and understand the sensitivities of various exhaust components on volumetric efficiency, exhaust gas scavenging efficiency and overall engine performance, to analyze the effect of exhaust gas flow through the combustion chamber and exhaust manifold. Moreover, meshing three-dimensional CAD parts and importing to WaveBuild workbench has been accomplished by WaveMesher, while Acoustic Acquisitions in WavePost has been used for engine acoustic simulations. In this research, the piston dynamic characteristics of an FPEG is compared with that of a conventional engine (CE) of the same size, and the difference in the valve timing is compared for both port scavenging type and valve scavenging type, with the exhaust valve closing timing is selected as the parameter. A zero-dimensional simulation model is developed in Ricardo WAVE software (2016.1), with the piston dynamics obtained from the simulation model in Matlab/SIMULINK (R2017a). For the CE and FEPG using scavenging ports, in order to improve its power output to the same level as that of a CE, the inlet gas pressure is suggested to be improved to above 1.2 bar, approximately 0.2 bar higher than that used for a CE.
