FARM + FUTURE

Whether to develop or preserve farm land has never been an easy topic. But Lancaster County was one of the first region’s to put the question on the table. Can a balance continue to be struck between iconic aerial views such as this one and our economic development needs?

NAMECHECKS

Rarely a week goes by that we don’t hear of a celebrity touting their Lancaster County roots or stopping by our area to visit. Whether it’s Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons, they’re always welcome to come back for a visit. Actor Jonathan Groff, a Ronks native and Conestoga Valley High School graduate, appears here as King George in “Hamilton” on Broadway.

CRAFTING A MOVEMENT

David J. Lunin, a furniture maker in Lancaster, is part of a fast-growing Maker Movement in our region. Industrious craftspeople are honing their craft in more public ways. Shops such as Madcap & Co. in Lancaster are opening to showcase their work.

LOCAL FOOD & LOTS OF IT No other spot in America – certainly in Pennsylvania – can make the most of its proximity to growers, gardens, grocers and good food. Here a customer checks out the jarred goods at Hoover’s Farm Market and Greenhouses in Lititz.

FESTIVAL FOOD If we grow it, we celebrate it. With festivals for everything from rhubarb to tomatoes, Lancaster County proudly proclaims it grows the best. And what better way to market the harvest than with a quirky festival? (Be sure to head down to Washington Boro this summer to try the tomato sandwiches at the festival there.) FEB. 14 2016 | SUNDAY | 17 TAKING ACTION During last year’s Extraordinary Give event, people donated more than $6 million during a 24-hour marathon of giving. More than 300 local organizations were supported as a result. Now that’s neighborly – another Lancaster County tradition.

BACK TO NATURE

In an era of birds-on-cam from faraway locales, consider this a reminder. American eagles, which once neared extinction, can often to be seen flying high over the Susquehanna River, too. A solemn reminder of how much nature means to life in Lancaster County. Just get out and take a Sunday drive to see more.

ike all the great love stories, this one Lstarts in Paris. Early in their relationship, Kristina and Tony Page, who met while work- ing at Lancaster County’s Bent Creek Country Club, took a trip to the capital of France. The romantic European city and sur- rounding farmland enticed the pair. And the food inspired their dream. Setting aside their separate jobs, the couple carved a joint path and opened Rooster Street Provisions in Eliza- bethtown in 2012. (Now called Rooster Street Butcher, they relocated their business in 2015 to a former jewelry and clock store at 11 S. Cedar St. in Lititz. They own a stall at Lancaster Central Market, too.) Their idea is unique. Rooster Street aims for one-part Paris, one-part Penn- sylvania and all parts tasty. They create, carve and carry char- cuterie: pork, beef, chicken, lamb and duck. Bacon, sausage and salami. Meats and cheeses from small farmers for the sampling. “Lancaster is where it’s at,” Kristina explains. “Why not do it where it’s at?” To make it work, the two moved in above the shop. “It’s our baby,” Kristina says. And when behind-the-counter disagreements flare up? You guessed it: Communication is key. “For Tony and me, it’s pretty easy,” Kristina says. “We put our best skills ROOSTER STREET BUTCHER where they can be used.” 11 S.
