In the nineteenth century, the vast wheat growing regions of Minnesota and the Dakotas as well as the water power provided by the massive drop in the river known as St. Anthony Falls attracted settlers and entrepreneurs to what is now Minneapolis. One of the most important of these entrepreneurs was Cadwallader Colden Washburn, a businessman and politician from Wisconsin. He was interested in the water power opportunities of the falls and owned the massive flour mills of the Washburn Crosby Company.
