‘Scherg’ was widely regarded as an outstanding pilot, and was awarded the Australian Flying Cross, and commanded American Air Forces as well as British Commonwealth Forces.

Canberra Airport Managing Director Stephen Byron said: “We believe it is important that we sustain both the historical and contemporary links between Airport and the Australian Defence Force, particularly the RAAF.”
