    NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service 2 NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service History and Background The systematic collecting of photographs of Norfolk really began in 1913 when the Norfolk Photographic Survey was formed, although there are many images in the collection which date from shortly after the invention of photography (during the 1840s) and a great deal which are late Victorian. In less than one year over a thousand photographs were deposited in Norwich Library and by the mid- 1990s the collection had expanded to 30,000 prints and a similar number of negatives. The devastating Norwich library fire of 1994 destroyed around 15,000 Norwich prints, some of which were early images. Fortunately, many of the most important images were copied before the fire and those copies have since been purchased and returned to the library holdings. In 1999 a very successful public appeal was launched to replace parts of the lost archive and expand the collection. Today the collection (which was based upon the survey) contains a huge variety of material from amateur and informal work to commercial pictures. This includes newspaper reportage, portraiture, building and landscape surveys, tourism and advertising. There is work by the pioneers of photography in the region; there are collections by talented and dedicated amateurs as well as professional art photographers and early female practitioners such as Olive Edis, Viola Grimes and Edith Flowerdew. More recent images of Norfolk life are now beginning to filter in, such as a village survey of Ashwellthorpe by Richard Tilbrook from 1977, groups of Norwich punks and Norfolk fairs from the 1980s by Paul Harley and re-development images post 1990s.

It has under-performed comparator cities in recent years. It is also shrinking when the trend should be one of expansion. Office occupiers are evolving rapidly Fundamental changes in the economy are bringing about major changes in the demand for property, particularly the office sector. Drivers are economic, business, technological and social, creating what is widely called the ‘knowledge economy’, typified by technology-enabled, knowledge- intensive businesses. This disruption is seen in the amount of space required; the nature of buildings; workplace design and workplace management. As firms adopt more agile, networked approaches, offices will become ‘less generic’ and less single purpose, and will work harder to provide choice and flexibility. The Norwich office market is fragile The Norwich office market is small and vulnerable. It is half the size of Cambridge, and has been reduced by 30% in recent years due to implemented or consented conversions to residential use through Permitted Development Rights. The Prior Approvals process has exacerbated this to the extent that the very survival of the city centre office market is at risk. Despite some recent rental growth induced by scarcity, new development remains unviable. The shrinking stock of remaining offices is ageing and vulnerable to further conversion activity. Take-up of space is comparatively low for a city the size of Norwich: between 2015 and 2019 there was an annual average of 11,000 sq m of lettings (mostly second-hand), in 39 deals averaging 280 sq m each.

    Glimpses of Medieval Norwich - Cathedral Precincts This walk takes you through the historic Norwich Cathedral Close and along the river, which acted as part of Norwich’s defences. Walk: 1½ - 2 hours, some steps It is one of five trails to help you explore Norwich’s medieval walls, and discover other medieval treasures along the way. Work started on the walls in 1294 and they were completed in the mid-14th century. When completed they formed the longest circuit of urban defences in Britain, eclipsing even those of London. Today only fragments remain but, using these walking trails you will discover that much of Norwich’s medieval past. Norwich, London, and the regional integration of Norfolk’s economy in the first half of the fourteenth century PAMELA NIGHTINGALE The central-place theories used by geographers to explain the integration of markets are increasingly popular with medievalists, and the growth of Norwich in the first half of the fourteenth century, coupled with its connexions with London, raises the possibility that this period did indeed see the integration of markets into regional economies which matured into what James Masschaele has called ‘a rudimentary national economy’.1 He concluded that regional economies had already evolved in outline in England by about 1250 through the creation of a hierarchical constellation of markets round a leading town which became the specialised hub of the network and its chief link with other regions.2 As the most commercially progressive of English counties, Norfolk should offer the most convincing evidence of these developments. By 1349 at least 121 weekly markets had been founded in the county, over 80 per cent of them before 1300.3 There were also many rural fairs, such as those held three times a year at Hanworth in North Erpingham Hundred, at Horsham St Faith in Taverham Hundred, and four times a year at North Creake in Gallow Hundred.4 But how far by the mid- fourteenth century had Norfolk’s markets become part of an integrated regional economy of the kind described by central-place theories?   • Norwich Heritage Walk
    Norwich Heritage Walk This heritage walk is approximately 1.5 miles (2.5 km) long and is mostly along pedestrianised streets. It will introduce you to the castle, cathedral and some of the other historic landmarks close to the city centre. Allow at least an hour, but you may want to take longer to enjoy it all! This route involves some slopes and uneven surfaces. Itinerary The tour starts at the Forum, on Millennium Plain. This is the building that rose in 2001 from the ashes of Norwich's library, which was destroyed by a fire. One of the newest buildings in the city, it's a good place to start exploring some of the oldest. Opposite the Forum is St Peter Mancroft Church, built in 1430-55. It's such a fine building that it's sometimes mistaken for one of the city's two cathedrals. Inside, the full height of the wooden hammerbeam roof can be appreciated. The medieval stained glass in the East window shows scenes from the New Testament and is well worth taking time to see. This is just one of 31 medieval churches in Norwich – more than in any other city in Western Europe. From St Peter Mancroft, you can wander into the Market Place. To avoid steps, go to the right of the church and turn left onto Gentleman's Walk. Norwich Market is the largest 6 day open market in the country, and has stood here for over 900 years. Follow the slope down to cross Gentleman's Walk, and through a tiled archway into the Art Nouveau splendour of the Royal Arcade, designed by Norwich architect George Skipper.

SOURCE A School textbook (Ben Walsh, Empires and Citizens Vol 1) The ordinary people Domesday tells us a lot about the richest, most important people in society. It is not so easy to see what happened to slightly less important people under Norman rule. However, we do know about some people. For example, there was a priest in London called Regenbald. He drew up many legal documents for Edward the Confessor. He also drew up documents for William the Conqueror. This suggests that many of the ordinary officials in the government who did the day-to-day work kept their jobs after the Norman invasion. It is much more difficult to work out how the Conquest affected ordinary people in English villages. Most historians think that the Conquest did not affect them very much. Freemen, villeins and smallholders still worked their lands and their lord’s lands. The only difference was that their lords were Normans after 1066 rather than Saxons.
