LAUGHTEN-EN-LE-MoRTHEN is a large and pleasant village and township, occupying a. lofty eminence, 12 miles E.N.E. of , and 7 miles E. by S. of . . • The township, including the hamlets of , Brookhouse, and Carr, about 1 mile N., contains about 3,500 acres of land, and in 1861 had 171 houses and 736 inhabitants. A. B. St. Leger, Esq., is lord of the manor of Laughton, and he and Mr. C. Hatfield own nearly all the land. The Earl of Scarborough is lord of the manor of Slade Hooton. The Church, dedicated to All Saints, is a fine edifice1 with nave, chancel, and side aisles, and having a tower at the west end, by a surm~untml . tall crocketted spire, which, from its lofty situation, may be eeen for several miles round. The living is a vicarage, value £376, in the patronage of the Archbishop of York, and incumbency of the Rev. Wm. Samuel Hartley, B.A. The Wesleyans have a small Chapel here. There is a good National School for boys' and girls', conducted by Wm. Wasney and Emily Hannah. The .Manor House is a spacious farm residence, about the centre of the village, which was rebuilt by A. F. St. Leger, Esq., the owner• and is occupied by Mr. Samuel Barker. The Old Hall is an ancient fabric, built iB. 1663. It is the property of Mrs. C. Hatfield, and residence of :Mr. John Chambers, farmer. The poor have several small benefactions, arising from Beckwith's, and other charities. GILDING WELLS is a small township and village, which with W oodsetts was formed into a new ecclesiastical parish in 184 7. It is situated about 15 miles E. of Sheffield; and contains 574A. 3R. 19P. of land, and in 1861 had 85 inhabitants of whom 39 were males. Rateable value, £580 9s. 6d. Sir Thos. W. White is the principal proprietor, but J. C. M. Athorpe, Esq., is the owner of two farms, and H. Garland, Esq., one. LETWELL is a small township, 10 miles E. by S. of Rotherham, the property of Sit T, W. White, Bart. It contains 135 inhabitants. Here is a small Chapa' af Ease.
