AN OVERVIEW OF CCRI ATHLETICS PAST AND PRESENT The Community College of Rhode Island is home to one of the Ocean State’s finest and most successful intercollegiate athletic programs. Since its inception in 1965, the CCRI program has long been considered a front-runner in New England community college and junior college athletic circles. The basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, cross country, golf and soccer teams have all been nationally ranked. The 2002 women’s soccer team captured the school’s first national championship, while a number of other squads, includ- Vin Cullen Harold “Whitey” Fell ing men’s basketball and women’s soccer, were national runners-up. From Hall of Fame athletic director and men’s basketball coach Vin Cullen to baseball coaches Ken Hopkins, Whitey Fell and Art Pontarelli, tennis coach Ray Carr and volleyball coach Gail Davis, the tradition of great coaches and top-flight teaching has extended through the years and continues through the present day. CCRI started the season 2-5 before ripping off eight consecutive wins, which included two wins against Monroe College and three against Orange County County Community College. As was the case most of the season, the ebbs and flows contin- ued shortly after a double-header sweep against New Hampshire Tech as the Knights lost their next five, dropping them out of postseason contention. Offensively, Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, RI) led the nation in hitting with a .635 batting average to go with a .689 on-base percentage, including 10 doubles. Doyle also led the team with 15 stolen bases and 32 runs. Another source of power in the lineup was Hannah Northup (Warwick, RI), who batted .423 with 22 RBIs and 21 runs scored. Alexis LeBelle (Warwick, RI) and team captain and MVP Hannah Caliri (Pawtucket, RI) tied for the team lead with three home runs apiece. LeBelle also batted .400 with nine doubles and drove in 21 runs while Caliri hit .349 and led the team with 26 RBIs while scoring 17 runs. Fellow captain Maddie McDonald (East Providence, RI) hit .410, including seven doubles, and Raevyn Watson (East Providence, RI) produced a solid stat line across the board with a .326 average, 15 hits, 10 runs and six RBIs.
