July 2017

As you begin to think in greater detail about preparations for registration at Culver and what that August day on the Culver campus might look like for your family, we thought it would be nice for you to have some of the most essential information pulled together for you in one place. To that end, the Culver Parents Association is pleased to provide you with this special registration resource guide.

We have included the things we wish we had in hand when preparing to move our sons and daughters to campus and when walking through registration for the first time. Inside, you will find a packing list, phone numbers for key departments, a one-page registration schedule, a map detailing the campus locations you will visit on registration day, and more. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with its contents before you come to campus and to bring it with you on registration day. I think you’ll be glad you did.

And while this is a fairly concise compilation of some of the most often needed information, don’t forget that there is a wealth of information in the Culver Parent Handbook which can be found on Culver’s website at handbook.culver.org. There you will find even greater detail including a useful list of fre- quently asked questions under the General tab.

In the meantime, enjoy the rest of the summer with your family, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Your Parent Ambassador will be a great resource for you, but please know that I am happy to field any questions as well. My contact information, as well as that of Culver’s Director of Parent Relations, can be found below.

Again, welcome to the Culver family! We look forward to seeing you in August!

Warm regards,

Jana Baldwin Julie Crews Barger Chair, Culver Parents Association Director of Parent Relations [email protected] [email protected] 517.677.9185 574.842.8272

This is a dynamic document and may be updated Revised 5.22.17 22 2017-2018 Transportation Schedule

Flights should be scheduled to arrive at least one hour before bus departure time on return day. This allows time for baggage claim, transit to the meeting area, etc. Students are to call Student Life at 574- 842-8140 to cancel their seat on the bus if plans change during break. Seats for “walk on” students at return locations are not guaranteed. Students who are not signed up for a bus seat should call Student Life for seat availability. The time listed within the table below on departure days is the earliest time that a flight should be scheduled. This allows adequate time for bus travel and clearing security. On arrival days the time listed is the bus departure time of the bus. Students should arrive ONE HOUR BEFORE the bus is scheduled to depart.

The listed times for arrival and departure for Chicago are Chicago times, not Culver times. Culver chap- erones do not remain at the airports for extended periods on departure days, nor do they arrive on re- turn days more than two hours prior to departure time. All buses leave the Culver campus at 7:00 a.m. on departure days for Fall Weekend, Thanksgiving, Spring Vacation, Winter Break and Winter Weekend. For additional details on drop-off and pick-up locations at each airport, visit https://handbook.culver. org/04-travel--dates/transportation-schedule. 23 MATRICULATION

The matriculation of new students involves passing through the Logansport Gate entrance to the school and over the Leadership Plaza. This is symbolic of the eventual passage through the Graduation Arch (girls) and Iron Gate (cadets). As each student passes through Logansport Gate, he or she is welcomed by the head of schools and his wife, the commandant of cadets, the dean of girls, and the top student leaders, regimental commander and senior prefect.

Matriculation takes place Monday, August 21st at 7:45 p.m. This ceremony is open to the public and all parents, families and friends are welcome to attend. Pictures of each student are taken as they matriculate and will be available for viewing on the Culver photo gallery.

Opening Convocation will take place prior to the Matriculation Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium. Guests are also welcome to attend this gathering.

Matriculation is just one of the many traditions that takes place at Culver. For more information about Culver’s traditions and a brief explanation, please visit Culver’s website and under the menu tab click Culver Life and then click on the Leadership tab.

24 FALL PARENTS WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 28 – OCTOBER 1, 2017

Parents Weekend takes place two times per year at Culver – in the fall and in the spring. Parents Weekends provide a wonderful opportunity not only to visit your children but also to experience their life at Culver. While there are some variations in schedule from one Parents Weekend to the next, every Parents Weekend includes the opportunity to attend classes with your student; set up individual appointments with teachers, counselors, and administrators; meet other families from your student’s dorm or unit at the dorm and unit meetings; and enjoy a showcase of student talent at the All School Meeting.

Fall Parents Weekends include the Saturday evening Fall Ball which parents are welcome to attend. A highlight of the evening is Officers Figure, a beloved Culver tradition that takes place at Fall Ball and again at Final Ball during Graduation Weekend wherein cadets who have attained the rank of officer promenade in a series of formations, first with their mothers and then with their dates. To learn more about the history of Officers Figure, visit news. culver.org/the-story-behind-the-officers-figure.

Most girls in CGA attend the dance with friends or dates. There are guidelines for dress selection that can be found in the Student Handbook. Cadets wear dress uniform. Appropriate guest attire for Fall Ball is semi-formal or formal, and you will find that those parents not participating in Officers Figure tend to dress a bit less formally.

In even numbered years, Culver’s biennial auction takes place during Fall Parents Weekend, and in odd numbered years, the Culver Parents Association sponsors another Parents Weekend special event – this fall, it will be a pan- cake breakfast and golf outing at the Academies’ newly restored Golf Course. Watch your email for the chance to sign up for this special gathering!

You are encouraged to make reservations for overnight accommodations for these special weekends as soon as possible as space is quite limited. The following two websites may prove helpful in identifying local lodging op- tions: www.visitmarshallcounty.org and www.culverchamber.com/members/#4.

A link to register for the weekend will be sent to you in August, along with an official schedule. In the meantime, though, please see the next page for a template of what the highlights of a typical Fall Parents Weekend schedule look like.
