The Galileo Observer Clarity – Honesty – Integrity Serving the Galileo Alumni Community since 2002 Vol XIX № 2 April 2021 Not quite there as yet. Galileo still has one foot in the Virtual World but if we remain vigilant and go about our lives safely and with common sense; we shall see each other very soon. Thank you to Joe Scafidi class of 1950 for all the years of being the Galileo Alumni Association Treasurer. Joe has worked endlessly for hours and years on keeping our books in order. Doing a wonderful job and we are so grateful. He remains a big part of the Alumni Association and will continue to help us out in any way. THANK YOU JOE! The alumni appreciate your efforts. On another note, we welcome Marion Gizzi class of 1952 who was delighted to join us and be our new Treasurer. Marion comes to us with many years of experience in being a treasurer for other non- profits. We look forward to working with you Marion! Thank you For the "Galileo 100 Project", we would like to partner with the Galileo Parents, Teachers, Students, Alumni and Admin, to create a “Once in a lifetime celebration for all to enjoy. We will take a trip back- in-time to experience the creation of the Galileo High School, advance to the current time, and into the future of what Galileo can be.” Please join us and be on one of our committees. BOBBY BROWN (1924-2021) When Dr. Bobby Brown passed away last month, he left a legacy of which Galileo alumni and students, past, present and future, can be proud. He was 96. After graduation from Galileo in 1942, Bobby Brown had two passions - playing baseball and becoming a doctor. He did both and excelled in both. He played eight years with the New York Yankees, winning four World Series rings and along the way became a cardiologist in Fort Worth. He served as the American League’s president from 1984 to 1994. Dr. Brown led the movement to ban chewing tobacco from the major leagues. Earlier in his life he and a fellow student saved the life of a Coast Guardsman from a plane crash off the Pacific Coast. For a fuller account of his life, visit the following link(s): < https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Brown_(third_baseman) > < https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/bobby-brown/ > < https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Bobby_Brown > < https://ripbaseball.com/2021/03/31/obituary-bobby-brown-1924-2021/ > < https://nypost.com/2021/03/25/bobby-brown-yankees-champion-turned-doctor-dead-at-96/ > In his later years Bobby Brown was involved with Galileo as a member of the Alumni Association and a generous donor. He was inducted into the Galileo Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. On October 26, 2012, during the Sports Hall of Fame dinner ceremony, we had the honor of inducting Dr. Brown into the newly created Galileo Hall of Merit. He thus became the first member of both Halls. The San Francisco Italian Athletic Club welcomed 250 guests to witness the induction of former athletes into the Sports Hall of Fame. Bobby Brown regaled the audience with his memories of being a student at Galileo (he was a straight A student and ASB President) and playing baseball at Funston Field. One of the guests was his former Yankee teammate and native San Franciscan Charlie Silvera. Several of his former Galileo classmates also attended. Alumni Bill Dito ’50 and Vince Gomez ’52 performed a parodied version of “Sweet Georgia Brown” to the audience’s delight. In his introduction of Brown, SHOF committee member Joe Martino ‘50 concluded with the following heartfelt statement: “While it is likely that in his distinguished and illustrious career Dr. Brown has received awards from more prestigious and renowned institutions than from Galileo High School, it is most unlikely that he has received one with greater affection, admiration and gratitude than the Hall of Merit award we bestow on him tonight.” Bobby Brown visited Galileo Academy and was accompanied by Martino and Bettie Grinnell on a tour of the school (see Bettie’s account of his visit in her Between the Lions column). We honor Dr. Bobby Brown’s memory by remembering his inspiration and humanitarianism. May He Rest in Peace. Introduction to the HOM 2012 4 | A p r i l 2021 BETWEEN THE LIONS – October 2020 Greetings Mighty Lions! Here’s what’s happening at Galileo these days. FALL 2020 SCHOOL OPERATIONS The first day of school for the Fall Semester was August 17, 2020. UPDATE: SFUSD began the school year with “Distance Learning” for at least the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. Planning by the [D]istrict is in process now and more information will be released as important decisions are made. SPRING 2021 SCHOOL OPERATIONS UPDATE Distance Learning Continues The Distance Learning program continued in the Spring Semester with all students attending online classes each day from 9:00am – 1:40pm. On Mondays students attend all six of their classes for 40 minutes each and then the other days they rotate between periods 1,3,5 and periods 2,4,6, with each class on these days 80 minutes long. This meets the Instructional Minutes requirements of 240 minutes per day. There is a lunch break as well. After school there are time slots for students to talk with their teachers to ask questions or receive extra help on assignments. Starting on April 26, 2021 there will be some students and teachers who will have the opportunity to return to in-person learning. These are our “Special Needs” students. A limited number of classrooms will be used. The school district’s Buildings and Grounds Department has worked hard to prepare various parts of the school for the limited number of returning students. Some desks have been removed from the classrooms so that those remaining desks can be placed the required distance apart and also have standing 3-sided plastic shields on the desks. All water fountains have been covered over. In the hallways there are markers on the floor for students to be aware of “safe distancing.” And there are signs on the student restroom doors about capacity limitations. The custodians have been working hard to sanitize all areas that will be in use and this will be a daily ongoing process. NEW CURRICULUM REQUIREMENT - ETHNIC STUDIES San Francisco (March 25, 2021) - The San Francisco Board of Education approved a change to the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD)’s graduation requirements to include at least two semesters or 10 elective credits of Ethnic Studies, beginning with the class of 2028. The change was approved at the March 23, 2021 Board of Education regular meeting. “At SFUSD we are committed to teaching the contributions of all people and to ensuring all of our graduates have a strong sense of self. We have worked diligently to create a model curriculum and develop our educators’ capacity to teach a range of Ethnic Studies courses,” said Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews. < Dudnick, Laura. "PRESS RELEASE: SFUSD Adds Ethnic Studies As Graduation Requirement." Benchmark Internet Group, LLC, SFUSD, 25 Mar. 2021, sfusd.bmeurl.co/C05CCCB. Accessed 4 May 2021. > Galileo students will have an opportunity to enroll in Honors sections of Ethnic Studies. READ THE PENDULUM ONLINE It will soon be again possible to read Galileo’s newspaper, “The Pendulum” [online] so you can keep up with what is going on at school. Right now the Galileo Website is being converted to a new portal and the SFUSD is overseeing this for all the schools. When this is in place and this portion of the website is working, simply go the Galileo website: [ http://www.galileoweb.org ] and on the front page on the right-hand side you will see Pendulum Online with “Read More.” Simply click on that and you can read each edition of “The Pendulum.” The Galileo Observer | 5 SPECIAL TELESCOPE YEARBOOK CELEBRATION 100 YEARS Galileo students in the yearbook class and the journalism class are producing special articles and a 100 Year website with a great deal of interesting Galileo History. The website is entitled “ Galileo Lions “Eppur Si Muove” and features the history of Galileo, “100 +Years of History.” One very interesting section is titled “100 for 100,” and it features stories from members of the Galileo Family about people and events in the last 100 years. Among those stories posted now are ones about people and events through the years, including ASB Advisor for many years, Eugene Wing, Yearbook Sponsor and former Galileo graduate, Mark Huynh, retired teacher Rob Schnitzer who taught Photograpy (among other subjects) and has many photos from past years, Politicians and a very fun memory of mine from 2006, “Galileo’s 98 Year Old Graduate Josephine Belasco!” You can enjoy all of this and more by going to: galileolions.org No password is required.
