The Galileo Observer Clarity – Honesty – Integrity Serving the Galileo Alumni Community since 2002 Vol XIX № 2 April 2021

Not quite there as yet. Galileo still has one foot in the Virtual World but if we remain vigilant and go about our lives safely and with common sense; we shall see each other very soon.

Thank you to Joe Scafidi class of 1950 for all the years of being the Galileo Alumni Association Treasurer. Joe has worked endlessly for hours and years on keeping our books in order. Doing a wonderful job and we are so grateful. He remains a big part of the Alumni Association and will continue to help us out in any way. THANK YOU JOE! The alumni appreciate your efforts. On another note, we welcome Marion Gizzi class of 1952 who was delighted to join us and be our new Treasurer. Marion comes to us with many years of experience in being a treasurer for other non- profits. We look forward to working with you Marion! Thank you

For the "Galileo 100 Project", we would like to partner with the Galileo Parents, Teachers, Students, Alumni and Admin, to create a “Once in a lifetime celebration for all to enjoy. We will take a trip back- in-time to experience the creation of the Galileo High School, advance to the current time, and into the future of what Galileo can be.” Please join us and be on one of our committees. Galileo 100 – Centennial Celebration We will be celebrating the 100 Centennial this year, we are in the process of having meetings to discuss the events and activities that we will be holding. There are three committees, Weekend Planning/Fundraising-PR/Marketing, Visual Media and History. If you would like to help and join any one of these committees we would love to have you. A big THANK YOU to Jill Pfeifer McIntyre for donating her Mom's and Aunt's yearbooks back to Galileo. Dorothy DeMaria (1931 & 1933) Lois DeMaria (Fall 1940, Spring 1940, 1941) along with the yearbooks she also gave us a 1942 Pendulum and a January 1942 Program for the Commencement Exercises. The Galileo Observer | 3 Through the Telescope Sisvan Der Harootunian REMEMBERING DR. BOBBY BROWN (1924-2021)

When Dr. Bobby Brown passed away last month, he left a legacy of which Galileo alumni and students, past, present and future, can be proud. He was 96. After graduation from Galileo in 1942, Bobby Brown had two passions - playing baseball and becoming a doctor. He did both and excelled in both. He played eight years with the , winning four rings and along the way became a cardiologist in Fort Worth. He served as the American League’s president from 1984 to 1994. Dr. Brown led the movement to ban chewing tobacco from the major leagues. Earlier in his life he and a fellow student saved the life of a Coast Guardsman from a plane crash off the Pacific Coast. For a fuller account of his life, visit the following link(s): < https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Brown_(third_baseman) > < https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/bobby-brown/ > < https://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Bobby_Brown > < https://ripbaseball.com/2021/03/31/obituary-bobby-brown-1924-2021/ > < https://nypost.com/2021/03/25/bobby-brown-yankees-champion-turned-doctor-dead-at-96/ > In his later years Bobby Brown was involved with Galileo as a member of the Alumni Association and a generous donor. He was inducted into the Galileo Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. On October 26, 2012, during the Sports Hall of Fame dinner ceremony, we had the honor of inducting Dr. Brown into the newly created Galileo Hall of Merit. He thus became the first member of both Halls. The San Francisco Italian Athletic Club welcomed 250 guests to witness the induction of former athletes into the Sports Hall of Fame. Bobby Brown regaled the audience with his memories of being a student at Galileo (he was a straight A student and ASB President) and playing baseball at Funston Field. One of the guests was his former Yankee teammate and native San Franciscan Charlie Silvera. Several of his former Galileo classmates also attended. Alumni Bill Dito ’50 and Vince Gomez ’52 performed a parodied version of “Sweet Georgia Brown” to the audience’s delight. In his introduction of Brown, SHOF committee member Joe Martino ‘50 concluded with the following heartfelt statement: “While it is likely that in his distinguished and illustrious career Dr. Brown has received awards from more prestigious and renowned institutions than from Galileo High School, it is most unlikely that he has received one with greater affection, admiration and gratitude than the Hall of Merit award we bestow on him tonight.” Bobby Brown visited Galileo Academy and was accompanied by Martino and Bettie Grinnell on a tour of the school (see Bettie’s account of his visit in her Between the Lions column). We honor Dr. Bobby Brown’s memory by remembering his inspiration and humanitarianism. May He Rest in Peace. Introduction to the HOM 2012 4 | A p r i l 2021 BETWEEN THE LIONS – October 2020 Greetings Mighty Lions! Here’s what’s happening at Galileo these days. FALL 2020 SCHOOL OPERATIONS The first day of school for the Fall Semester was August 17, 2020. UPDATE: SFUSD began the school year with “Distance Learning” for at least the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. Planning by the [D]istrict is in process now and more information will be released as important decisions are made. SPRING 2021 SCHOOL OPERATIONS UPDATE Distance Learning Continues The Distance Learning program continued in the Spring Semester with all students attending online classes each day from 9:00am – 1:40pm. On Mondays students attend all six of their classes for 40 minutes each and then the other days they rotate between periods 1,3,5 and periods 2,4,6, with each class on these days 80 minutes long. This meets the Instructional Minutes requirements of 240 minutes per day. There is a lunch break as well. After school there are time slots for students to talk with their teachers to ask questions or receive extra help on assignments. Starting on April 26, 2021 there will be some students and teachers who will have the opportunity to return to in-person learning. These are our “Special Needs” students. A limited number of classrooms will be used. The school district’s Buildings and Grounds Department has worked hard to prepare various parts of the school for the limited number of returning students. Some desks have been removed from the classrooms so that those remaining desks can be placed the required distance apart and also have standing 3-sided plastic shields on the desks. All water fountains have been covered over. In the hallways there are markers on the floor for students to be aware of “safe distancing.” And there are signs on the student restroom doors about capacity limitations. The custodians have been working hard to sanitize all areas that will be in use and this will be a daily ongoing process.

NEW CURRICULUM REQUIREMENT - ETHNIC STUDIES San Francisco (March 25, 2021) - The San Francisco Board of Education approved a change to the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD)’s graduation requirements to include at least two semesters or 10 elective credits of Ethnic Studies, beginning with the class of 2028. The change was approved at the March 23, 2021 Board of Education regular meeting. “At SFUSD we are committed to teaching the contributions of all people and to ensuring all of our graduates have a strong sense of self. We have worked diligently to create a model curriculum and develop our educators’ capacity to teach a range of Ethnic Studies courses,” said Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews. < Dudnick, Laura. "PRESS RELEASE: SFUSD Adds Ethnic Studies As Graduation Requirement." Benchmark Internet Group, LLC, SFUSD, 25 Mar. 2021, sfusd.bmeurl.co/C05CCCB. Accessed 4 May 2021. > Galileo students will have an opportunity to enroll in Honors sections of Ethnic Studies. READ THE PENDULUM ONLINE It will soon be again possible to read Galileo’s newspaper, “The Pendulum” [online] so you can keep up with what is going on at school. Right now the Galileo Website is being converted to a new portal and the SFUSD is overseeing this for all the schools. When this is in place and this portion of the website is working, simply go the Galileo website: [ http://www.galileoweb.org ] and on the front page on the right-hand side you will see Pendulum Online with “Read More.” Simply click on that and you can read each edition of “The Pendulum.”

The Galileo Observer | 5 SPECIAL TELESCOPE YEARBOOK CELEBRATION 100 YEARS Galileo students in the yearbook class and the journalism class are producing special articles and a 100 Year website with a great deal of interesting Galileo History. The website is entitled “ Galileo Lions “Eppur Si Muove” and features the history of Galileo, “100 +Years of History.” One very interesting section is titled “100 for 100,” and it features stories from members of the Galileo Family about people and events in the last 100 years. Among those stories posted now are ones about people and events through the years, including ASB Advisor for many years, Eugene Wing, Yearbook Sponsor and former Galileo graduate, Mark Huynh, retired teacher Rob Schnitzer who taught Photograpy (among other subjects) and has many photos from past years, Politicians and a very fun memory of mine from 2006, “Galileo’s 98 Year Old Graduate Josephine Belasco!” You can enjoy all of this and more by going to: galileolions.org No password is required. Go Lions! SPORTS UPDATE SPRING SPORTS From Galileo’s Athletic Director Joe Keough “We'll be having a modified spring sports season. It's limited to two days per week for each sport and there won't be any playoffs or championships. Despite that, I'm excited that our students will have a chance to practice and play their sports and get to interact in person with teammates and coaches!” Here's what we've got for the spring:  Baseball  Boys and Girls Basketball (outdoor practice only, no competitions)  Flag Football  Football (spring training, no pads, but with an all new coaching staff headed by Gal[ileo] alumnus Nick Naudain)  Boys and Girls Soccer  Softball  Boys and Girls Tennis  Track & Field Most teams will practice two days per week. Check out http://cifsf.org for the most up to date information.” A TRUE CHAMPION BEGAN AS A GALILEO LION Every day I walk into Galileo I am always ready for the “unexpected” and that happened on Friday, October 26, 2012 with my thoughts on the evening event, The Galileo Sports Hall of Fame And Hall of Merit Induction. Two very nice gentlemen came into the Main Office and mentioned that they were Galileo Alumni and asked if I could let them into the auditorium. I said I would be happy to accompany them! Little did I know who they were even though they told me their names. We went into the auditorium through the back entrance, I turned on the lights, and they both were so excited to see the beautiful auditorium and stand on the stage looking out to where the audience would be. It turned out both of them had been Student Body Presidents during the years they were each Galileo Seniors. They imagined an audience and began engaging with the audience just as if the auditorium was filled with their former students! It was thrilling for me! Joe Martino and Bobby Brown enjoyed their visit and Joe told me it was the first time Dr. Bobby Brown had been back to Galileo, his alma mater since he graduated in 1942. Dr. Bobby Brown was inducted into the Galileo Hall of Merit that evening at the Galileo Sports Hall of Fame induction. He is the first Galileo graduate to be inducted into both the Galileo Sports Hall of Fame and the Galileo Hall of Merit. Shortly after meeting Dr. Bobby Brown, I was able to read all about him and his many accomplishments as a Cardiologist and New York Yankee! And sources indicate he was a “Straight A Student” for all his classes at Galileo. An amazing story for an amazing person. Again, the unexpected happened just recently when I checked the phone messages at school (remotely from home). There was a message from Robert Smith, a person I did not know, who mentioned he was a 6 | A p r i l 2021 neighbor to Galileo. He told me that Dr. Bobby Brown had passed away. I returned his call and was only able to leave a message. And, of course I contacted Joe Martino who confirmed the sad news and sent me the obituary. Dr. Bobby Brown was 96. Introduction to HOM 2012 Click Here GALILEO T-SHIRTS/SWEATSHIRT I have three Galileo T-Shirts and one Galileo Sweatshirt that I would like to pass on to anyone interested. They were only worn a few times. One is a shirt from the Class of 2003 with the notation “finally free in 2003”. It is black, has all the class members’ names on the back and is an Adult Large Size. The second Galileo T-Shirt is a Class of 2004, is black and on the back is a purple and gold lion with all the names of classmates below the Galileo Lion. This is also an Adult Large Size. The third shirt is a black long-sleeved T Shirt with the Galileo Lions/JROTC logo on the front and on the back in big white and orange letters: “Where there’s UNITY there’s VICTORY.” The size is also Adult Large. The Galileo Sweatshirt is the one celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Galileo. It is gray with a very active looking lion on the front with “Galileo Celebrating 90 Years 1921 – 2011” in purple and gold. The size is an Adult Medium. If you are interested in any of these items, please email me at: [email protected] I would like these Galileo clothing items to find good homes with Galileo Alumni! Go Lions! GALILEO WILL CELEBRATE 100 YEARS IN SEPTEMBER 2021! Planning continues to celebrate Galileo’s centennial. The very enthusiastic committee of Galileo Alumni (GAA) the ASB, PTSA, Administration, Faculty and Staff, students and friends are encouraged to participate in planning and conducting this important event. The way the plans are made will be influenced by the pandemic and what events are possible with what the conditions may be in September 2021. We are hoping for a series of centennial celebrations in September and October 2021. We are also designing Sweatshirts and T-Shirts to commemorate Galileo’s 100 Years! Stay tuned and if you would like to be on one of the planning teams, please let your organization leaders know as well as our GAA President Charlene Mori. # # # Let me know what you’d like to hear/read about at Galileo.
