Switzerland As Seen Through the Lens of Over a Century of Foreign Cinema Fr Backdrop Switzerland Expo/Gstaad BACKDROP SWITZERLAND EXPO/GSTAAD SWITZERLAND AS SEEN THROUGH THE LENS OF OVER A CENTURY OF FOREIGN CINEMA FR BACKDROP SWITZERLAND EXPO/GSTAAD En venant dans l’Oberland Bernois, Backdrop Switzerland Expo est dans son élément naturel. BACKDROP SWITZERLAND EXPO EN BACKDROP SWITZERLAND EXPO/GSTAAD In the Bernese Oberland, Backdrop Switzerland Expo is in its natural element. Indeed, the re- gion was the location for such mythical films as Albert Parker’sSherlock Holmes (USA, 1922), Alfred Hitchcock’s Secret Agent (UK, 1936), Jean Delannoy’s La Symphonie Pastorale (FR, 1946), Harold French’s White Cradle Inn (UK, 1947) and of course Blake Edwards’ legendary The Return of the Pink Panther (UK, 1975), who was also resident in Gstaad with his wife Julie Andrews. Evidently, we must add to this list the many Bollywood productions that were made here, among them Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania The Jayenge (India, 1995), one of the most suc- cessful in the history of Indian cinema. That film has helped to make Switzerland one of India’s favorite travel destinations, but also for Bollywood filmmakers who have shot many movies in the region. In television, we have the series Archer (USA, 2011) and Chuck (USA, 2007), with episodes tak- ing place in Gstaad. Last, but certainly not least we must mention David Miller’s The Bells Of Hell Go Ting-A-Ling (UK, 1966) with Gregory Peck and Ian McKellen. The filming of this big budget film was to ben- efit from the wave ofThe Sound of Music, finally abandoned after 5 weeks of shooting due to a summer of rain, and snow... The focus on the Bernese Oberland presented at the Gstaad Palace this summer is part of a research on Switzerland as a backdrop in foreign cinema from 1900 to the present. It took the form of the book Backdrop Switzerland (Age d’Homme, 2016). The author, Cornelius Schregle, has scoured the archives of the Swiss Cinematheque to find hundreds of photos, some of which exhibited for the first time in Gstaad. We will highlight the filming ofThe Return of The Pink Panther in Gstaad and the Palace in 1974. Backdrop Switzerland Expo presents never seen-before photos from the Cinémathèque as well as the Gstaad Palace archives and a short documentary of the SRG SSR on the gala eve- ning with an incredible budget of $500,000 for the European premiere with stars like Richard Burton, Elisabeth Taylor and of course Peter Sellers. You can see the latter receive the title of ‘honorific policeman’ from the city of Gstaad, in reference to his character Inspector Clouseau in the film. We are honored to welcome Catherine Schell, co-star of the film with Peter Sellers and Christo- pher Plummer, who will share fun stories with the audience on July 21 about the film as well as from the James Bond On Her Majesty’s Secret Service in which she plays Nancy, filmed at the Schilthorn in 1969. The exhibition covers all of Switzerland as perceived in foreign films consists of photos, vintage posters, a documentary film and a selfie corner. It will be open until August 3rd. Free admission.

ISIS agent, Sterling Archer, launches his Pirate King Theme FX Cartoon Series Archer Gets Its First Hip Hop Video courtesy of Brooklyn duo, Drop it Steady Fans of the FX cartoon series Archer do not need to be told of its genius. The show was created by many of the same writers who brought you the Fox series Arrested Development. Similar to its predecessor, Archer has built up a strong and loyal fanbase. As with most popular cartoons nowadays, hip-hop artists tend to flock to the animated world and Archer now has it's hip-hop spin off. Brooklyn-based music duo, Drop It Steady, created a fun little song and video sampling the show. The duo drew their inspiration from a series sub plot wherein Archer became a "pirate king" after his fiancée was murdered on their wedding day in front of him. For Archer fans, the song and video will definitely touch a nerve as Drop it Steady turns the story of being a pirate king into a forum for discussing recent break ups. Others say the organizers of Occupy Wall Street were listening to their demo when they began to discuss their movement. Though it has yet to be verified, word that the first two tracks off of their upcoming EP, The Most Interesting EP In The World, were recorded at the ceremony for Prince William and Katie Middleton and are spreading through the internets like wild fire.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Introduction Bollywood in Australia Andrew Hassam and Makand Paranjape The global context of Bollywood in Australia Makarand Paranjape The transcultural character and reach of Bollywood cinema has been gradually more visible and obvious over the last two decades. What is less understood and explored is its escalating integration with audiences, markets and entertainment industries beyond the Indian subcontinent. This book explores the relationship of Bollywood to Australia. We believe that this increasingly important relationship is an outcome of the convergence between two remarkably dynamic entities—globalising Bollywood, on the one hand and Asianising Australia, on the other. If there is a third element in this relationship, which is equally important, it is the mediating power of the vibrant diasporic community of South Asians in Australia. Hence, at its most basic, this book explores the conjunctures and ruptures between these three forces: Bollywood, Australia and their interface, the diaspora. 1 Bollywood in Australia It would be useful to see, at the outset, how Bollywood here refers not only to the Bombay film industry, but is symbolic of the Indian and even the South Asian film industry.

Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education, 11 (1). https://doi.org/10.31390/ taboo.11.1.09 Taboo, Spring-Summer-Fall-WinterGhada Chehade 2007 63 The Problem with Borat Ghada Chehade There is just something about Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen’s barbaric alter-ego who The Observer’s Oliver Marre (2006) aptly describes as “…homophobic, rac- ist, and misogynist as well as anti-Semitic.” While on the surface, Cohen’s Borat may seem to offend all races equally—the one group he offends the most is the very group he portrays as homophobic, racist, misogynist, and anti-Semitic. Or in other words, the real parties vilified by Cohen are not Borat’s victims but Borat himself. The humour is ultimately directed at this uncivilized buffoon-Borat. He is the butt of every joke. He is the one we laugh at, and are intended to laugh at, the most inasmuch as he is more vulgar, savage, ignorant, barbaric, and racist than any of the bigoted Americans “exposed” in the 2006 film Borat: Cultural Learn- ings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. This would not be quite as problematic if the fictional Borat did not come from a very real place and did not so obviously (mis)represent Muslims. While the 2006 film has received coverage and praise for revealing the racism of Americans, very few people are asking whether Cohen’s caricature of a savage, homophobic, misogynist, racist, and hard core Jew-hating Muslim is not actually a form of anti-Muslim racism.
