    Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme 2014-2015 IOC Olympic Studies Centre Final Report: Governing to maintain legacies: urban governance, policies, and the long-term impacts of the Olympics Mark Davidson School of Geography, Clark University June 2015 1 Abstract Every Olympic host city now pursues an array of legacy goals, ranging from increased sports participation rates and environmental remediation, through to widespread economic redevelopment. With the array of legacy objectives growing, the task of generating and maintaining legacy pledges is becoming ever greater for Olympic cities. This project investigated how four recent host cities – Atlanta, Sydney, Salt Lake City and Vancouver – have gone about the production of Olympic legacy over the medium and long term. The focus of the research was upon the urban governmental practices and reforms that have been undertaken in each city. The research found that the four cities have different post-Games legacy trajectories. However, a number of trends emerged across the different cases, including: the centrality of community development to post-Games venue management, the relationship between hosting models and legacy outcomes, the emergence of trusts and foundations within the legacy project, the tendency for legacy to become site specific over time, and the importance of localised governmental structures to the project of legacy governance. The report ends with a series of conclusions and recommendations. The season builds up to a climax at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships on the fastest ice on earth in Salt Lake City in February. The six world records during last season's ISU World Cup Speed Skating finals at the Utah Olympic Oval, were just a prelude to what's yet to come. The 2019/20 season also has a couple of novelties in store. Milwaukee, USA, will host the first ever ISU Four Continents Championships in Speed Skating, Hamar will be home to the first ever combined ISU World Allround and ISU World Sprint Speed Skating Championships, and at the ISU World Cup Speed Skating Final in Heerenveen there will be a first ever mixed gender relay as demonstration event. The Junior Speed Skaters are looking forward to the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne in January. Early season form The season kicks-off with the first of six legs in the ISU World Cup Speed Skating in Minsk, Belarus, on November 15-17. Most skaters have already skated competitively beforehand, however. Igor Kováč Národné športové centrum 6. júna 2012 Urbanism and geography of the Olympic Winter Games Introduction This contribution focuses on urban and spatial aspects in organisation of the Olympic Winter Games. It explains the role of urbanism within this process, implying the reasons which allow its distinguishing as an “Olympic” phenomenon. In this regard, an Olympic geography will be defined and its role will be further explained, resulting into identification of Olympic territory as a common platform of the both. Consequently, the concept of Olympic urbanism model will be introduced as a result of application of geographical approaches in studying the Olympic urbanism, in order to provide a historical overview and final synthesis of the factors determining spatial organisation of the Olympic Winter Games in host territories. Olympic urbanism Without any intention to exclude its environmental specifics, the Winter Games as a sort of mega-event can be clearly understood “...as an important urban phenomenon of our time...an one-time urban event with increasing prevalence as an urban strategy...” (Hiller, 2000: 185). Of course, the mountainous specifications of the Winter Games cannot be neglected as they essentially modify this strategy. In any way, however, it is the urbanism, a set of scientific and artistic methods and procedures used in the formation of human settlement, which represent those strategies. The main concern of urbanism, as one of its definitions says, is the formation and composition of urban organism and wider territorial units, following the quality of the human living environment, affected by natural, material, cultural and social aspects, highlighting the concrete population needs as its direct starting point.

CBR is an intelligent experience-based solution solving system explained as similar problems have similar solutions, and easily adapted to various fields. In this work, we use case-based reasoning for predicting best possible finish-times for speed skaters given various external conditions. With inspiration from related research in recommendation systems for other sports, we studied a system handling the factors affecting speed skating and retrieving the most sim- ilar races for further prediction. The CBR system was modeled with the open-source software myCBR Workbench and SDK. This software retrieves cases with a restful API provided by the SDK based on the local-global similarity principle also defined in myCBR Workbench. Looking at the results, we conclude that a CBR system like this is suitable for our problem statement. Speed skating offers multiple non-numeric features that can make a signifi- cant difference in the results.
