  • A Landslide Susceptibility Analysis for Buzau County, Romania
A LANDSLIDE SUSCEPTIBILITY ANALYSIS FOR BUZAU COUNTY, ROMANIA VERONICA ZUMPANO*, HAYDAR HUSSIN**, PAOLA REICHENBACH***, DAN BĂLTEANU****, MIHAI MICU*****, SIMONE STERLACCHINI****** Key-words: susceptibility, shallow landslides, weights of evidence. Landslides are one of the most common hazards in the Romanian Curvature Carpathians and Subcarpathians, covering a wide range of geomorphic mass wasting forms and processes. The purpose of this paper is to present a susceptibility analysis at regional scale for the Buzau County (Romania), focusing on shallow and medium-seated (sensu Bălteanu 1983) landslides. The susceptibility map was obtained using the weights-of- evidence modeling technique that allows understanding the significance of predisposing factors of shallow and medium-seated failures. The model was run considering eight environmental factors: slope, altitude, internal relief, planar and profile curvature, aspect, soil, land-use. A landslide inventory derived from archive data, literature review, field mapping and aerial imagery interpretation was divided into a training and a prediction set and was used to prepare and validate the model. The model performance was evaluated using the area under the ROC and the success rate curve. The susceptibility map represents an important step for landslide hazard and risk assessment, crucial components for the definition of adequate risk management strategies. 1. INTRODUCTION The interest in studying landslides distribution and impact is rising for two principal reasons: an increasing awareness of their socio-economic significance on the one hand, and on the other hand the growing pressure of development and urbanization on the natural environment. As development expands on sloping urban areas, a higher incidence of slope instability and landsliding is reported (Aleotti & Chowdhury, 1999).

  • The Effects of Excess Precipitation Fallen in the Curvature Subcarpathians (Romania) During the Warm Period of the Year
THE EFFECTS OF EXCESS PRECIPITATION FALLEN IN THE CURVATURE SUBCARPATHIANS (ROMANIA) DURING THE WARM PERIOD OF THE YEAR. CASE-STUDY: SĂRĂŢEL AND BĂLĂNEASA DRAINAGE BASINS ANDUŢA GROFU1, CARMEN-SOFIA DRAGOTĂ2 Key-words: pluvial regime, annual precipitation quantities, seasonal average quantities, monthly precipitation quantities, Buzău drainage basin. Abstract. The present work aims at presenting the main characteristics of the pluviometric regime in the Bălăneasa and Sărăţel basins, represented by the quantitative parameters of the warm season (spring-autumn). The climatic data provided by the Pătârlagele Weather Station are representative for the geographical area we are interested in. The period analysed (1961–2007) is statistically relevant in terms of climatology, covering the standard climatological period (1961–1990), the last decade of the twentieth century and the early years of the current decade which are characterized by major extreme pluvial events on a global, regional and local scale. The distribution of precipitation quantities presents value differences on various time-scales. In the annual rain regime specific to the temperate-continental climate of Romania, the quantities of the warm semester have the greatest share. For adequate decisions to be made and implemented in order to diminish the negative environmental effects of excess/deficient precipitation, the present article has been aimed at establishing the multi-annual water values in the warm semester of the year. The analysis and conclusions are based on the annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation values, highlighting the value differences, imposed mainly by the complexity of the Subcarpathian Curvature sector. 1. INTRODUCTION The Subcarpathian sector studied is one of the most complex physical-geographical units in Romania in terms of geology, morpho-structure and intense sedimentation processes, e.g.

Case study: the Buzău Subcarpathians Ilinca-Valentina STOICA1), Anca Victorina MUNTEANU2) 1) University of Bucharest, The Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Researches on Territorial Dynamics, Bd. Regina Elisabeta, 4-12, Bucharest, Romania; [email protected]. 2) University of Bucharest, Faculty of Geography, Bd. Nicolae Balcescu, no. 1, Bucharest, Romania; [email protected]. Abstract. The Buzău Subcarpathians are an all but completely rural region, currently facing manifold problems, which have led to the onset of a process of gradual deterioration. The purpose of this article is to assess the demographic dysfunctionalities that have emerged and intensified as a result of the multiple transformations undergone by the Romanian rural space in the past half-century. In order to analyze the demographic characteristics, 7 indicators were calculated (the rate of natural increase, the net migration rate, the intensity of depopulation, the ratio of the elderly population of the total population, the population aging index, the demographic potential index, the total age dependency ratio) for each of the region’s 58 administrative-territorial entities. Later on, starting from the standardized values of the 7 variables, a global indicator was calculated (generically called demographic index), which allows the classification of settlements into a hierarchy in terms of the demographic factor. The analysis of the demographic index reveals that the administrative-territorial entities with the highest values are, in particular, those located within the area of influence of the cities of Buzău and Ploiești, which feature a good access infrastructure.

  • A Premise for Declaring the Geopark Buz˘Aului County (Romania)
The assessment of geodiversity – a premise for declaring the geopark Buz˘aului County (Romania) Laura Comanescu˘ ∗ and Alexandru Nedelea Department of Geomorphology-Pedology T-Geomatics, Bucharest University, 010041, No. 1, N. Balcescu Avenue, Bucharest, Romania. ∗Corresponding author. e-mail: [email protected] The geopark Buz˘aului County does not belong to the Geoparks European Network, as there are numer- ous governmental, legislative and scientific initiatives in this respect. The geopark is situated in the central-south-eastern part of Romania (in Buzau county) and it has a special potential of geological, geo- morphological, biogeographical and anthropic nature, a potential which has to be developed and brought into value. The idea of creating a geopark in this area is relatively recent and it was realized by a series of actions carried on by local authorities in partnership with several institutions, a partnership within which it was accomplished the proposal of a general development framework of the geopark, as well as the launching of a promotion campaign. The scope of this work is to evaluate the geodiversity existing in this space as an important starting point in declaring it as a European geopark, being known that it represents a real “open air museum”. The high values of geodiversity and biodiversity represent special strong points in this respect. The method we used was taken from the specialised literature, suffering a series of adjustments to the specifics of the studied area. In the present format, the method is applied for the first time in the Geography literature, so the values obtained cannot be compared with those obtained by other calculation formulas.
