The rapid expansion in recent years of the range of applications of remote sensing to hydrological problems has greatly increased the importance of this subject.

In recognition of this, both the WMO Commission for Hydrology and the Unesco Intergovernmental Council for the International Hydrological Programme expressed the need for a report on the application of remote-sensing methods to the assessment of water resources and water-balance elements. The Secre­ tariat of WHO in collaboration with Unesco thereupon arranged for the prepara­ tion of the present report, which has been written by Mr. D. R. Wiesnet (U.S.A.) with contributions from Messrs. V. G. Konovalov (U.S.S.R.) and S. I. Solomon (Canada). I am pleased to have the opportunity of expressing here our sincere appreciation to the authors for the time and effort they have devoted to this valuable publication.
