OD Remains At An All-Time High. IT’S A By Scott Fishman CIRCUS! Even while the coronavirus turns the world upside down, Impact Wrestling has enjoyed a creative resurgence and generated renewed buzz in the process. Executive Vice President Scott D’Amore attributes the recent success to playing the long game. “There have been so many people over the years that have come in looking for the quick fix,” he explained, alluding to behind-the-scenes instability Impact long endured. That is until Anthem Sports & Entertainment acquired a majority stake in the company. “We wanted to approach this like a sports team rebuilding,” D’Amore continued. “We wanted to build a strong foundation from the ground up. And we’ve done that from the talent side of things and also with our team behind the scenes. It’s two years of solid work and going above and beyond.” The company has managed to produce programming on a closed set at Skyway Studios in Nashville. The lack of a live audience led the promotion to explore outside-the-box ideas like Wrestle House. Think pro wrestling meets SNL meets . The promotion founded more than 18 years ago as Total Nonstop Action really started cooking on all cylinders leading up to the pay-per-view in July. For D’Amore, the tentpole event was a culmination. #Slammiversary was a topic of conversation, even trending number one in the United States. 18 OODD n the years leading up to the Civil War, the stage was set for that conflagration with other skirmishes stemming from the same issues that eventually caused war to erupt, particularly slavery. Some of those events took place during the “Bleeding Kansas” era from 1854 to the start of the war in 1861, when pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions regularly clashed along the border of Kansas Territory and Missouri. The combustible nature of that era in those areas and the country as a whole was effectively captured and dramatized in James McBride’s 2013 novel The Good Lord Bird, which won the National Book Award for Fiction. The acclaimed work is now adapted as a limited, seven-part Showtime series of the same name, debuting this month. Ethan Hawke, who is an executive producer with McBride, stars as famed abolitionist John Brown. Brown was, of course, a real-life figure and is a major factor in this tale, but the series is told from the point of view of a fictional enslaved boy named Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson). By Jeff Pfeiffer Doctor Who fans are familiar with the good Doctor often traveling through time and space during his or her many adventures. But now, fans themselves have a chance to go back in time in a way, with a somewhat restored (though “re-created” might be a better word) version of Doctor Who: The Faceless Ones, a serial that was only broadcast in its original, complete form over 50 years ago. The Faceless Ones is the mostly missing eighth serial of the fourth season of Doctor Who, which aired in six weekly parts from April to May 1967, and starred Patrick Troughton as the Doctor. Only two of the six episodes are held in the BBC film archives, with snippets of footage and still images existing from the other Doctor Who: four. However, off-air recordings of the soundtrack also still exist, making the animation of a complete serial The Faceless Ones possible once again. Three episodes air each night. BBC America, Oct. 7-8

It’s About Time For Year 4, Dontchathink? FARGO By Ryan A. Berenz n 1900, the Moskowitz Syndicate ruled the Kansas City underworld. Then it was the Milligan Concern. Then it was the Fadda Family. And by 1950, the Cannon Limited had arrived. “That’s how it worked,” high school student Ethelrida Pearl Smutny (E’myri Crutchfield) wrote in her history report. “Whoever was the last off the boat, finding the doors of honest capital closed, rolled up their sleeves and got to work, getting rich the old- fashioned way.” Year 4 of creator/writer/director Noah Hawley’s Fargo crime anthology series was originally scheduled to arrive in spring, but COVID-19 forced production to shut down. The new season, which premiered in late September, is set in mid 20th-century Middle America, where racial and economic tensions are on the rise. The Cannons are looking for their piece of the pie, and they’re ready to take it from the Faddas. And so begins the “Cannon/Fadda” gang war. Loy Cannon (Chris Rock) is a racketeer, but his entrepreneurial spirit and legitimate business sense are roadblocked by the era’s institutionalized racism. When Loy pitches a white-owned bank with the idea of offering customers an open line of credit — a “credit card” — he is met with a dismissive shrug. A multibillion-dollar idea is flushed down the pneumatic tubes. “Fargo is funny like a Scorsese movie,” Rock says of the series’ understated, subversive humor. “It’s always within the character and within the story. So that’s something I have to pay attention to.” Much of the story is told through Ethelrida’s perspective. “[She’s] very different from the other characters,” Crutchfield says. “She’s a biracial girl. Her parents own a funeral home, and she has bigger dreams than she’s set to have. It being the 1950s, a lot of things were against her.” Of course, there’s also the requisite Fargo funny-talkin’ Northerner. Minnesota native Oraetta Mayflower (Jessie Buckley) is an outwardly friendly hospital nurse with a head full of outdated notions and creepy inner demons. Oraetta is a hypermagnified version of “Minnesota nice” characters from the Coen brothers’ 1996 film. “[She] takes your salty niceness to the extreme,” Buckley says. Irish actress Buckley had just finished dialect practice when we caught up with her in Chicago, where much of the series was shot. While Buckley excels at the accent, Oraetta is far more than phonetics. She’s precise with language, she has an intricate understanding of human physiology, and she’s acutely attuned to divine communications. “She’s kind of a new- age spiritual guru, in her mind anyway,” Buckley says. “For her, she’s a complete genius.” All of those delusions are exacerbated by the fact that Oraetta snorts a lot of drugs. “We’re very high on lactose powder. That’s the reality of that situation,” Buckley says of the simulated narcotics the actors used. “There’s a lot of lactose powder going up our noses.” Fargo Drug-induced or not, there’s definitely a lot going on upstairs with Oraetta. “In my head, FX, she was kind of like a little bird,” Buckley says. “She was like a sparrow. She kind of witters Sundays away to herself all the time, and sometimes you don’t even know what’s coming out of her beginning Sept. 27 mouth. The boys of summer got a late start due to COVID-19, but they’re hoping to make up for it with a bigger fall. The 60-game MLB regular season wasn’t the usual 162-game grind that separates baseball’s wheat from its chaff, so the playoffs have been expanded to include more teams in a slightly different format. The postseason expands from 10 teams to 16 — eight from each league — with three division champions, three division runners-up and two wild-card teams seeded 1-8. The wild-card round begins Sept. 29 and consists of best-of-three-game series instead of one winner-take-all game. The format is 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5, with all games played at the higher-seeded team’s home park. There are no byes for the top teams, so the wild-card round could have huge upsets. ESPN airs seven of the series and TBS airs one. Beginning with the best-of-five-game division series, all playoff games will be played in a “bubble” at neutral sites: AL games take place in San Diego and , and NL games take place in Houston and Arlington, Texas. The World Series will be played entirely at Globe Life Field in Arlington, with Game 1 scheduled for Oct. 20 and Game 7, if necessary, planned for Oct. 28. FOX again has exclusive coverage of the World Series. Likely AL playoff teams at the time of this writing include the Tampa Bay Rays, N.Y. Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Oakland A’s and Houston Astros. Frontrunners for division crowns in the NL were the Atlanta Braves, L.A. Dodgers and Chicago Cubs, and a glut of teams were in contention for the remaining NL playoff berths.
