During the past year, the City of La Mirada has continued to enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the region and has remained one of the safest cities in Los Angeles County. Major crimes decreased by 6 percent from 1,209 in 2007 to 1,135 in 2008. The number of arrests increased by 21 percent, from 868 arrests made in 2007 to 1,105 arrests in 2008. “The decrease in crime and increase in arrests is due to proactive policing efforts by Sheriff’s Deputies and the entire Public Safety Team”, says La Mirada Sheriff’s Station Lieutenant Pat Val- dez. “La Mirada is committed to problem-solving policing and aggressive crime suppression.” La Mirada’s low crime rate is also attributable to strong partnerships between residents, busi- nesses and the City’s Public Safety Team. This partnership fosters a team-based approach to address crime and resolve nuisances. “Watchful residents and business officials who report suspicious activity to the Sheriff’s De- partment are valuable community members”, says Public Safety Manager Anne Haraksin. “All residents are encouraged to participate in Neighborhood Watch to help La Mirada stay safe.” Over the next year, the City will continue to work proactively to address criminal activity in the community. The Public Safety Team is dedicated to keeping La Mirada safe and maintain- ing a low crime rate.
