It can travel around one thousand kilometers in a single fill. The first long-range interstate CNG bus will play from Delhi to Dehradun. Mahindra & Mahindra along with Agility Fuel Solutions of USA have partnered with IGL for introducing the new concept of lightweight Type IV composite cylinders in buses. Note: The project has been executed by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and has been achieved through the design of Type IV Composite Cylinders in buses, replacing traditional very heavy Type-I Carbon Steel cylinders. 2. Rohtang tunnel in Himachal Pradesh named as Atal tunnel: Prime Minister Narendra Modi named Rohtang passageway in Himachal Pradesh as Atal Tunnel to mark the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The tunnel has been named as a tribute to the former Prime Minister who took the historic decision of constructing this strategic tunnel.     World’s longest highway tunnel opened in Himachal Pradesh Relevant for GS Paper III ; Prelims: Atal Tunnel at Rohtang Mains; Benefits Of Tunnel WHY IN NEWS • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Atal Tunnel at Rohtang at an altitude of above 3,000 metres in Himachal Pradesh. The 9.02 km-long-tunnel, built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), is the world‟s longest highway tunnel and connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley. Benefits of Tunnel 1. The tunnel provides would provide new strength to the country‟s border infrastructure. The tunnel, significant from the military logistics viewpoint, will provide better connectivity to the armed forces in reaching Ladakh. 2. It provides all-weather connectivity to the landlocked valley of Lahaul-Spiti, which remains cut- off for nearly six months in a year as the Rohtang Pass is uually snow-bound between November and April. Before the tunnel construction, the Lahaul Valley used to remain closed for vehicular movement due to bad weather conditions. 3. The tunnel reduces the distance by 46 km between Manali and Leh and the travel time by about 4 to 5 hours. It is expected to boost tourism and winter sports in the region. • In 2019, The Union Cabinet decided to name the tunnel as „Atal Tunnel‟ to honour former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his contributions. The decision was taken in 2000 when he was the Prime Minister. The foundation stone was laid by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on June 28, 2010.     After A Decade, Rohtang Tunnel Ready For Opening Next Month PTI @PTI_News Aug 27 2020, 5:52 PM IST Aug 27 2020, 5:52 PM IST Get notified on latest news The Rs 4,000-crore Rohtang Tunnel, the world's longest motorable roadway at an altitude of over 3,000 metres, is ready for opening next month following the completion of civil works that began a decade ago. The tunnel will be opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by mid- September, Satish Paretkar, Director of Hydro & Underground business unit at Afcons told PTI. A joint venture of Shapoorji Pallonji Group-run Afcons and Strabag of Austria won the Engineering Procurement & Construction tender for Rs 1,458 crore from Border Road Organisation in 2009. The cost of the project has crossed Rs 2,500 crore now, he said. The civil works started in 2009 and was to be completed within 6.5 years. Paretkar said the exact date of opening of the tunnel is yet to be finalised. The 9.02 kilometres-long Atal Tunnel, named after former Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, passes under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range on the Leh-Manali highway at an altitude of 3,060 metres at the lowest and 3,078 metres at the peak. The tunnel is 10.5 metres wide and has a height of 5.52 metres and a car can zip through at 80 kmph. According to Paretkar, the horseshoe shaped single-tube, double- lane tunnel has many firsts. With a length of 9.02 km, it is the longest in the world at an altitude of over 3,000 metres or 10,000 feet mean sea level, he said.
