F NATIONAL UPDATES: 1. Petroleum Minister unveils India’s first long distance CNG bus: Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled India's first long-distance Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus fitted with CNG cylinders at a function in New Delhi. It can travel around one thousand kilometers in a single fill. The first long-range interstate CNG bus will play from Delhi to Dehradun. Mahindra & Mahindra along with Agility Fuel Solutions of USA have partnered with IGL for introducing the new concept of lightweight Type IV composite cylinders in buses. Note: The project has been executed by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and has been achieved through the design of Type IV Composite Cylinders in buses, replacing traditional very heavy Type-I Carbon Steel cylinders. 2. Rohtang tunnel in Himachal Pradesh named as Atal tunnel: Prime Minister Narendra Modi named Rohtang passageway in Himachal Pradesh as Atal Tunnel to mark the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The tunnel has been named as a tribute to the former Prime Minister who took the historic decision of constructing this strategic tunnel. The strategic Atal tunnel will change the fortunes of this region and will help in promoting tourism in the region. The 8.8-kilometre-long tunnel is the world's longest tunnel above an altitude of 3,000 metres. After completion of the tunnel, it will provide all-weather connectivity to remote areas of Lahaul and Spiti Valley and reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 Kilometres. It is a 10.5-metre wide single tube bi-lane tunnel with a fire-proof emergency tunnel built into the main tunnel itself. -

8/27/2020 After a decade, Rohtang Tunnel ready for opening next month After a decade, Rohtang Tunnel ready for opening next month CNBC-TV18 • August 27, 2020 05:34 PM IST By PTI The Rs 4,000-crore Rohtang Tunnel, the world's longest motorable roadway at an altitude of over 3,000 metres, is ready for opening next month following the completion of civil works that began a decade ago. The tunnel will be opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by mid- September, Satish Paretkar, Director of Hydro & Underground business unit at Afcons told PTI. The 9.02 kilometres-long Atal Tunnel, named after former Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, passes under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range on the Leh-Manali highway at an altitude of 3,060 metres at the lowest and 3,078 metres at the peak. The tunnel is 10.5 metres wide and has a height of 5.52 metres and a car can zip through at 80 kmph. -
History : Project Deepak
HISTORY : PROJECT DEEPAK 1. Raising & Early History. Project Deepak was raised in May 1961 with Col S N Punjh as Chief Engineer, primarily for the construction of Hindustan-Tibet (H-T) Road. The H-T Road is one of the most difficult roads ever to have been constructed in India. The 76 Km long Pooh-Kaurik sector of H-T Road passes through considerable lengths of sheer vertical hard rock stretches and huge bouldery strata embedded in sand and non-cohesive material, which is inherently unstable. The sector runs along the River Satluj crossing it at several locations. The road runs at altitudes between 1600 to 3600 meters. On the whole, the terrain and climatic conditions are very uncongenial. Many valuable lives were lost during the construction of this road. Thus, this work is a testimony to the sheer grit, determination and perseverance shown by PROJECT DEEPAK right from its early days. The subsequent major events in the history of Project Deepak include:- (a) In 1965, construction of the 122 Km long Road Dhami-Basantpur-Kiongal and 107 Km long stretch of Road Keylong-Sarchu (part of the Manali-Leh road) was entrusted to PROJECT DEEPAK. (b) In December 1966, following disbandment of Project Chetak, all roads of Uttaranchal were taken over by PROJECT DEEPAK. Thus, the 300 Km long Road Rishikesh –Joshimath-Mana, 63 Km long road Road Joshimath-Malari and 260 Km long Road Tanakpur-Askote-Tawaghat came under PROJECT DEEPAK. (c) The early seventies saw Project Deepak spreading its light (Deepak Jyoti) in the states of Rajasthan and even Punjab. -

Economy was the main crux which caused Diasporas what disseminated cultures and religions on our planet. The Silk Road was one of the first trade routes to join the Eastern and the Western worlds. Ladakh also underwent the same process of evolution of trade although it was a difficult terrain but it provides access to travelers from central Asia and Tibet through its passes. Ladakh was a crossroads of many complexes of routes, providing choices for different sectors connecting Amritsar to Yarkand. Again, from Leh to Yarkand, there were several possible routes all converging at the Karakoram Pass. Comparative small human settlements in oases of Ladakh’s desert rendered hospitality to the travelers being situated as halting station on traditional routes. Indeed, such places (halts) were natural beneficiaries of generating some sort of revenues from travelers against the essential services provided to caravans and groups of traders and travelers. Main halts on these routes are well marked with petro-glyphs right from Kashmir to Yarkand and at major stations with huge rock carving of Buddhist deities. Petro-glyphs, rock carvings, inscriptions and monasteries, mani-walls and stupas found along the trekking routes, linking one place to other, are a clear indication that the routes were in-vogue used by caravan traders; these establishments were used as landmarks or guidepost for travelers.
