CHEROKEE RESIDENT PROMOTED TO BRIGADIER GENERAL IN THE IOWA

Col. Steven Kremer of Cherokee, Iowa, has been promoted to brigadier general in the and has been selected to be the Assistant Adjutant General - Readiness. Kremer’s military career includes several levels of command in the Iowa National Guard over the course of 28 years. Most recently, Kremer served as the commander of the 185th Regional Training Institute on Camp Dodge. “I have to tell you how truly appreciative I am of the confidence the state leadership has in allowing me to serve at this level,” Kremer said at the promotion ceremony. Kremer was born and raised in Cascade, Iowa, and currently serves as a juvenile court services supervisor for the 3rd Judicial District. He received his officer’s commission through the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps at the University of Northern Iowa in May 1991. He has led Soldiers at multiple levels of the Iowa Army National Guard. Kremer commanded the 185th Regional Training Institute from September 2015 to October 2019. Previously, he served as the operations officer for the state from February to August 2015. Kremer began his career and came up through the ranks as one of Iowa’s “Red Bulls,” in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division. He served as an infantry platoon leader, executive officer, company and battalion commander. Kremer deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as the commander of the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry. He later served as the deputy brigade commander of the 2nd BCT from January 2013 to January 2015.

Kremer earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and received a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. His military schools also include the Infantry Officer Basic Course in Fort Benning, Georgia. Kremer’s many military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal, among others. Kremer is now assigned to the Joint Forces Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa, to assist the adjutant general and provide oversight to training, readiness and communications.
