(August 7, 2021) – In the bareback riding, Kansas cowboy Jesse Pope won the Phillipsburg title for the second consecutive year. The 22-year-old cowboy rode Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Nutrena’s Election Day for 87.5 points and $2980. It was a full eight seconds, Pope said. “It felt like we were doing a lot of things. She’s a pretty small horse and really electric and she bucked hard. I had to sit on the gas pedal the whole time and wait for the buzzer.” A recent graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., Pope is ranked seventh in the world standings after an outstanding summer. He sat out of rodeo for two months with a fractured L5 vertebrae that pinched a disk, but over the week preceding and following July 4, Cowboy Christmas, won $21,000, and in the month of July, won $50,000. Pope made a big impression at his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year, finishing as the average champion and third place in the world. Last year’s National Finals was a jumping off point for this year. “A lot of people didn’t know me, going into the Finals last year. I was feeling really going into it, and won the average. I’ve been building off of that. I took it, built a fire with it, and I’ve been putting gas on the fire every time I get on.” He loves coming to Kansas Biggest Rodeo.

For the third time in four years, Tim O’Connell won the bareback riding at the Elk City (Okla.) Rodeo of Champions, sponsored by Lucky Star Casino. The three-time PRCA world champion bareback rider scored 87 points on the Beutler and Son Rodeo horse Anything Goes for the win. It was a ride the perfectionist found reasons to critique. “It wasn’t the ride I wanted to put on,” O’Connell said. “I felt like I was in a dog fight tonight. I felt like he knocked me forward, out of position. It wasn’t the controlled, snappy, sharp ride I wanted. But it was a really good ride. I’m just super-critical of myself.” O’Connell stands on the top of the PRCA world standings, heading into the last few weeks of the PRCA season, which ends Sept. 30. He is about $26,000 ahead of the number two bareback rider, Kaycee Feild, but that doesn’t matter to O’Connell. “There’s no such thing as a safe lead. I’ve had that number one spot pretty much the whole year, and I don’t plan on giving it up.” O’Connell won the Elk City Rodeo last year (88.5 points) and in 2017 (85 points).

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Susan Kanode (817) 307-6336 Field set for championship at Caldwell Night Rodeo By Susan Kanode for the Caldwell Night Rodeo CALDWELL, Idaho (Aug. 16, 2019) – There is a shootout going on in rodeo’s bareback riding and over 6,500 fans at the Friday Caldwell Night Rodeo (CNR) got to see Kaycee Feild and Clayton Biglow going at it firsthand. Feild, from Genola, Utah, is a four-time world champion who is looking for his fifth title and leads the world standings. Biglow is a rising star looking for his first world title who is less than $5,000 behind Feild. They both were among the bareback riders here Friday and both will be staying to compete for a CNR rodeo championship on Saturday. First to ride was the veteran. He got on Fettig Pro Rodeo’s horse named Classic Rock and when the judges added up their scores, he had an 89-point ride to take the lead here. Soon after it was Biglow’s turn. He rode a horse from Northcott Macza for 86 points putting him in a tie for second place. With just three points between them, the CNR title could easily go to either one of them. Feild has already won $3,526 here. Biglow, who tied with Steven Peebles from Redmond, Ore., got a check for $2,351. Both of these men are headed to Las Vegas next December to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with their current season earnings. The battle for a world title will play out over 10 nights there, but prior to that, they will be in a battle for the lead in the standings.
