TWO COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES READY FOR LAUNCH Arianespace will orbit two communications satellite on its fifth launch of the year: INTELSAT 17 for the international satellite operator Intelsat, and HYLAS 1 for the European operator Avanti Communications. The choice of Arianespace by leading space communications operators and manufacturers is clear international recognition of the company’s excellence in launch services. Based on its proven reliability and availability, Arianespace continues to confirm its position as the world’s benchmark launch system. Ariane 5 is the only commercial satellite launcher now on the market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads. Arianespace and Intelsat have built up a long-standing relationship based on mutual trust. Since 1983, Arianespace has launched 48 satellites for Intelsat. Positioned at 66 degrees East, INTELSAT 17 will deliver a wide range of communication services for Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Asia. Built by Space Systems/Loral of the United States, this powerful satellite will weigh 5,540 kg at launch. It will also enable Intelsat to expand its successful Asian video distrubution neighborhood. INTELSAT 17 will replace INTELSAT 702. HYLAS 1 is Avanti Communications’ first satellite. A new European satellite operator, Avanti Communications also chose Arianespace to orbit its HYLAS 2 satellite, scheduled for launch in the first half of 2012. HYLAS 1 was built by an industrial consortium formed by EADS Astrium and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), using a I-2K platform. Fitted with Ka-band and Ku-band transponders, the satellite will be positioned at 33.5 degrees West, and will be the first European satellite to offer high-speed broadband services across all of Europe. -

During the decade from 1989–1998, NASA used two types of launch systems, one consisting of several families of expendable launch vehicles (ELV) and the second consisting of the world’s only partially reusable launch system—the Space Shuttle. A significant challenge NASA faced during the decade was the development of technologies needed to design and implement a new reusable launch system that would prove less expensive than the Shuttle. Although some attempts seemed promising, none succeeded. This chapter addresses most subjects relating to access to space and space transportation. It discusses and describes ELVs, the Space Shuttle in its launch vehicle function, and NASA’s attempts to develop new launch systems. Tables relating to each launch vehicle’s characteristics are included. The other functions of the Space Shuttle—as a scientific laboratory, staging area for repair missions, and a prime element of the Space Station program—are discussed in the next chapter, Human Spaceflight. This chapter also provides a brief review of launch systems in the past decade, an overview of policy relating to launch systems, a summary of the management of NASA’s launch systems programs, and tables of funding data. The Last Decade Reviewed (1979–1988) From 1979 through 1988, NASA used families of ELVs that had seen service during the previous decade. -

TV5MONDE Rides the Intelsat Globalized Network for Le Tour du Monde de la Francophonie Broadcast September 20, 2017 Intelsat to provide seven satellites to enable the upcoming television special, spanning five continents, 23 destinations and multiple time zones LUXEMBOURG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep. 20, 2017-- Intelsat S.A. (NYSE: I), operator of the world’s first Globalized Network and leader in integrated satellite communications and TV5MONDE, the France-based international television network, are partnering to broadcast Le Tour du Monde de la Francophonie [The Grand Tour of the World of Francophonie] on Sept. 21. The live, 24-hour television broadcast will feature interviews with French culture experts from five different continents, in 14 subtitled languages and multiple time zones, reaching approximately 318 million television households around the world. The tour broadcast requires a complex global network infrastructure to support the contribution of live interviews from 23 different countries, 13 of which will be backhauled to the TV5MONDE broadcast center in Paris using seven Intelsat satellites: Galaxy 28, Intelsat 19, Intelsat 20, Intelsat 901, Intelsat 905, Intelsat 906 and Intelsat 33e. One such exposure near the McMath–Pierce Telescope in the early evening sky revealed, in addition to the expected star streaks, a curious line of three fixed “stars” (Fig. 1). These proved to be geostationary satellites, or geo-stats. That we were aimed at the equator of the sky may be judged by the red streak due to the equatorial Orion nebula and the three bright stars of Orion’s Belt. Since the latitude of Kitt Peak is 31°N, the sky equator is that distance south from directly overhead. Geo-stats are relay communication and environ- mental satellites with nearly circular orbits, in the equatorial plane of the Earth, and with an orbital period of one sidereal day—the time it takes the Earth to fully rotate measured relative to the fixed stars rather than the sun. If these three conditions are met, an artificial satellite will be stationary in space about 35,786 km (approximately 22,276 mi) above the Earth, FIG. 1.
