AGM REPORT For a second year in succession the highlight of the AGM was the election of 3 Honorary Members: Brian Leathley, Harry Manning and Michael Wrigley. Brian arrived late on the running scene, having spent many years playing rugby in Leeds. Brian is a tall man and, in his prime, had a long, distance-devouring stride, which he used to good effect on the road, cross country and fells. His forte, however, was long distance challenges. He completed the Challenge on two occasions, the second at the age of 71 and he is still the oldest runner to make a first time completion of a Bob Graham Round (66 at the time, if I remember rightly). Unfortunately, Brian has been cruelly struck down by illness in recent years, but Christine was present at the AGM to accept honorary membership on Brian’s behalf. Harry has been, and remains, a stalwart of the club for 40 years, competing mainly in cross country and on the road, as well as serving on the committee and, currently, as our cross country statistician. Harry keeps a keen watch on results, scouring each issue of Athletics Weekly to enable him to nominate a host of contenders for ‘Run of the Month’. Michael also represented the club mainly on the road and cross country course. Like Harry, during his 30 years of membership Michael has put in untold numbers of hours, quietly, behind the scenes, on behalf of the club and its members. After a year’s ‘sabbatical’, he returned to the committee at the AGM.

Despite reporting a substantial surplus for the 2011-12 financial year the Treasurer, Jim Hickie, expressed concern over increasing newsletter postage costs and an anticipated rise in the cost of individual athletes’ registration with England Athletics. The committee was examining a number of ways in which the increasing costs might be addressed without the need to increase subs. The AGM approved a number of amendments to the constitution, most of which related to the date of payment of subscriptions. Because so many members now pay their subscription by standing order on 1 st September [THANKYOU!] , there is not enough time to implement a change in subscription rates between the AGM and the due date. Therefore, your 2012-13 subscription will cover membership until 31 st December 2013, with your next subscription being due on 1 st January 2014. [That’s right – for this one time, you get an extra 4 months membership for no extra payment!] In due course, the Membership Secretary will write to you about the changes you need to make. The AGM also brought some changes to the Committee: Paul Archer is now the Cross Country Captain, while John Roche has stepped forward into the post of Road Captain and, as mentioned above, Michael Wrigley has returned to the committee. However, we are still seeking a Ladies’ Road Captain. A list of the club’s officers and committee members is on p5, while the list of captains is on the back page for easy reference. I hope you will give the committee and captains your full support during 2012-13.

Boothy’s Bit

First, thank you very much for your continued support and confidence in me to carry on as Chairman for another year. Despite the occasional difficulties and disappointments, I gain a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction from the involvement with such a marvellous bunch of people. I am looking forward to the next year when I hope we will build on the recent progress that the club has made. Thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers, the juniors continue to go from strength to strength. We should soon have a new web site up and running, which will enable us to be much more inter-active and keep our members and the public informed more quickly. With regard to this, we urgently need a PUBLICITY OFFICER, whose main task will be to keep the website updated with reports on training, races, events and social activities.

At the first meeting of the new committee we decided the priority events that we would like senior members to aim at in the next 12 months so that CleM maintains its standing on the local and national scene across 3 disciplines: Road Cross Country Fell Northern Combined Mid Lancs Cross Coun- Ian Hodgson Relay (Oct Autumn Relay try League (Oct 2012- 2012) (Sept 2012) March 2013) Northern 12 Stage Lancashire Cross Coun- UKA British Fell and Hill Relay (March 2013) try Championships (Jan Relay Championship (Oct 2013) 2012) National 12 Stage FRA English Champion- Relay (April 2013) ship (March-September 2013) British Master Road Relays (May 2013)

Your captains will update members of the dates and details of all these events via the Newsletter and website. If you would like to take part in any of these events, please contact the relevant team captain. DON’T WAIT TO BE ASKED. I appreciate that, for newer, less experienced members, talk of local and national competition can be off-putting. But, any member, regardless of ability and experience, can take part in road races, Mid Lancs Cross Country League races and the FRA English Championship races. This month, I celebrate 25 years’ membership of Clayton Harriers, during which time I have found that the more involved I became, the more my running improved– and the more I enjoyed it. I urge every member – new and not-so-new - to attend training sessions regularly, take part in at least one road, cross-country and fell race, as well as volunteering to help at least one race, junior training session or Parkrun each year. Pendle Witch Relay 19 th August 2012 Thanks to everyone who made the Pendle Witch relay a success, including runners and guest runners, as well as partners and family members, Jude Lee and Don Barton, our volunteer drivers who kindly gave up their time to ferry us around. The distance of 35.5 miles was covered in a leisurely 8hrs 20m, mostly in fine weather until Dunsop Bridge, where the rain set in for runners departing on the long, high stretch over to Quernmore. The splits are given below, and include some time taken at changeovers for changes of clothes and shoes, and for Pete Thompson to stoke up with food and water, as he was running the whole distance, Well done to him for that. He used his GPS to record times and distances. Schedule times were optimistic and we finished an hour behind, but the whole idea was to have a good time and enjoy the day, so speed didn’t matter. Distance - 35.56 miles Height Gained - 5,721 ft Total Time - 8 Hr 20 Mins Accumulative Splits Barrowford to Barley 1hr 04m 2.96 miles Monica Shone, Anne Marie Grindley Barley to Chatburn 2hr 13 7.96m Pete Thompson, Linda Lord Chatburn to Wadd’ton Fell 3hr 22 13.33m Karin Goss, Sue Allen Wadd’ton Fell to Dunsop Br 4hr17 18.24m Jude Ashworth, Ron Chappell Dunsop Bridge to Quernmore 7hr 40 32.81 m Pete & Bev Thompson, Doug Munroe, Richard Bellaries Quernmore to Lancaster 8hr 20 35.56 m Most of the above & Wendy Dodds

Guest runners included Peter Booth, Susan Farnworth, Mick Dobson, Peter Costello, Steve Green, & Dave McMullen thanks to them, in particular Peter B and Mick who ran 3 legs from Barley to Dunsop Bridge. Looking fresh as a daisy even after two hard days racing, Wendy turned up at Quernmore to run the last leg with us. As an antidote to the Witches, and probably to grant them absolution for their heinous crimes, Dug McCallum caused some hilarity by turning up wearing an ancient priest’s outfit complete with sandals and wooden staff. I’m not sure what the residents of Worston made of him as he strode to meet us coming off Pendle, but he definitely got a quizzical look from the vicar outside Chatburn church! Dug had to drop out of the relay at the last minute, but he certainly made up for it by coming along and giving us all a good laugh.

I think everyone enjoyed the day, despite the heavy rain as we jogged down the road into Lancaster in our dripping witch & wizard outfits. The highlight of the day for me was going over Pendle with the huge 1612 numbers on the big end as a backdrop, something admittedly I’d been disparaging about earlier, but which looked so impressive as it came into view. Driving up to Waddington Fell was a bit hazardous, trying to pass the many cyclists on the Bradley Wiggins Charity ride, but lucky Jude Lee got a glimpse of the man himself as he flashed past at a rate of knots, sadly too quickly for her to get her camera out. Tea (or something a bit stronger) and cake, in Williamson Park café rounded off the day for us, and we toasted the unfortunate Pendle witches executed just across the way almost 400 years ago to the day.

A Grand Day Out

Some two million people would visit the Olympic Park including the four of us on the night of Rudisha and Bolt, care of son Jonathan's good luck in the draw and his generosity. I am writing this doing 140 mph through Rugby on the way back to Preston after a memorable day at the Games. Row 63 on the back straight was quite high up, but it gave us an overview aided by the two big TV screens and a monocular. The atmosphere created by eighty thousand spectators was fantastic. In the 800m the eight athletes were accompanied by a roar as they went round the track - a Mexican wave of sound. When WR flashed on the screen, the place erupted. Bolt's 200m race soon followed. We all stood up in amazement and anticipation, cameras held high. Andrew Osagie was last in the 800m with a time that would have won him the gold medal in the three previous Olympics: two world records, various national records and a season's best. (Shame) Meanwhile the ladies were trying to complete their javelin final and the men their triple jump. It was hard for both with all this going on and several medal ceremonies and decathlon events taking place. Odohu and Sayers could well have medalled but for injuries. Pity. Our cheering seemed to make a massive difference. Some triple jumpers wanted a specific clap. We obliged. The ladies' javelin winner from the Czech Republic was already in the lead when during a lull she got the full attention of everyone and improved to 69m, a world leading distance. Somebody shout at me! The brilliant Games Makers (volunteers) were everywhere. There were no queues, prices weren't too bad, The food was good and we were well looked after from the moment we arrived at Stratford Station to the moment we left. As Harry M said, “The park is massive and stunning.” It had to be to accommodate the crowds. I've just been singing, "If you're happy and you know clap your hands" and high-fiving people with large padded pink gloves. Bit embarrassing really and I was wrapped in a white ensign.

Glasgow 2014 next!?

They think it’s all over…..but it isn’t yet!

We all know that when we need advice we need to ask the right person, whether it’s about contracts of employment, borrowing money, investing, health matters, etc. My story has led to a breath of fresh air for me, and more time in my favourite past-time – running in the countryside. I could very easily gone down the wrong road and suffered an enforced change of lifestyle against my wishes. I hope to give our members thoughts about the direction they take when faced with problems, at least in getting the best advice. Seven years ago I built some decking in our back garden – a challenge I really enjoyed but physically was perhaps at times a little beyond me. When doing some of the heavier tasks I developed pain in my left hip (at least that was what I thought). The pain only occurred when doing this sort of task or gardening, not when running. In October 2010 I tore my cartilage. I went to my GP with pain in my right knee and was referred for a scan (which confirmed this problem) and subsequently to a consultant. Going through the chain of events, as often happens, I ended up having a knee operation (Arthroscopy) in March 2011 at Gisburn Park Hospital (transferred from Royal Blackburn). What I didn’t know is that there is a fixed period for Physio – six weeks, at which time I was discharged (despite not being pain free). I continued trying to run but not too successfully, because of pain, and usually alone because I was too slow for others or could not run far enough. In October 2011 I went back to my GP and reported my hip problem. He asked me where the pain was – I indicated the outside of my left hip. He referred me for an X- ray. In due course he told me the X-ray showed that the tissue was worn very thin and said “….only you know how much pain you have, so I can refer you to a Consultant or give you pain killers”. Many people with hip problems have told me that this signalled the end of their running days, so I thought “I’ll go for the pain killers” and keep going for as long as possible. In May this year (I don’t know why), the hip pain started going worse, in addition to the pain in my knee. Slowly but surely I was going downhill and started thinking this is the end and I’m going to have to re-visit my GP. My fear was that I would be referred to a Consultant and subsequently surgery would be the end. Then one day, whilst reading my Summer edition of the FRA Fellrunner magazine, I read Denise Park’s page. Denise is of course the World Mountain Running Association Accredited Physio. Who would be better placed for advice? I contacted Denise who squeezed me into a cancellation (for which I was extremely grateful). Denise asked where the hip pain was, and when I indicated the outside of my hip, she said, “That is not your hip, but muscle”. Denise spent an hour working on my problems (breaking down scar tissue) - the hip and the knee. Denise said the knee pain was also scar tissue caused by the Arthroscopy camera going into the knee. That evening I ran 5 miles and whilst not perfect this was the best I had felt for months. I have continued to run since and I can feel the improvement having now had two sessions with Denise. Many years ago I listened to a lecture by a Physician and he said, “The last thing to do is go to a Surgeon, because they regularly think surgery is the answer to everything”. Here’s to a few more years on the Fells!

CROSS COUNTRY SEASON 2012-13 After much (heated) debate and soul-searching, the Committee has decided that for this season we will affiliate our senior runners to the Mid Lancs League only. (Juniors will affiliate to both Red Rose & Mid Lancs League.) For some time, many of us have felt that affiliating to both leagues (up to a total of 15 cross-country fixtures in a season) stretches resources to the limit. As you will have read on p4, one of the club priorities this year is success (i.e. individual and team trophies, plus ladies’ team promotion) in the Mid Lancs League and at the Lancs Championships. We feel that this will be more attainable if we concentrate on just one league. Senior members who wish to enter the Red Rose League can, of course, still do so, but will have to pay their own entry fee. At the end of the season, we will review the club’s performance and decide on future strategy.

just missed out on the Bob Graham in terrible conditions – wet and windy. • The Juniors presentation event was to take place at the Thieveley Pike Race.

• This piece is at the request of Bob Slater:- In September 1987 at least three members (the results don’t reveal club), David Cox, Peter Barlow, and Bob Slater took part in the Bullock Smithy 56 miles Peak District LDWA event. Bullock Smithy was the original name for Hazel Grove, a title used from 1790 and officially changed in 1835. As with many LDWA events there was a good number of checkpoints – 14 in this case, and the results indicated splits in hours and minutes (not seconds). In 1999 Helen Diamantides took the Ladies record – 9 hours 21mins and Tony Okell took the record in 1996 with 7 hours 59mins.

However, in 1987 David Cox won in 9 hours 31 mins (crossing the line with J.Amies and A.Ireland) followed by Bob in 4 th place in 9 hours 53 mins. David had started with his close friend Peter Barlow, but Peter dropped out. The two of them had done the event in 1985 and had taken almost 17 hours. David went on to do the event again in 1988 and achieved a similar good time.

In July 1995 David wrote a letter to the newsletter editor making a plea to club runners. There was to be demonstration on Boulsworth Hill in the Autumn (which I think was being organised by the Ramblers) and was about conflict on rights of way with Landowners. David warned that it would not be good for Fell Runners to get involved and we should maintain our good relations with the Landowners.

In September’s issue Peter Barlow reported that David had died on 20 th July - 10 months after an operation for cancer. Unfortunately, this was closely behind legend George Brass a few weeks earlier. David was 50 years old and had joined CleM in 1978. Peter had met David in Reedley Working Men’s Club in 1973 when he moved into the area. David was on his own – pipe in mouth and pint in hand. David had special interests in literature, poetry, music and National Hunt racing but after being introduced to fell running by Peter, his running and walking became much of his life and enjoyment. Wendy said a lot of heart searching went into which 8 peaks to add to the BGR. WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!!

MARIONS MESSAGE We now have a new Junior Cross Country Manager: Jason Pier, who has everything organised and ready to go for Red Rose and Mid Lancs Cross Country League Races. Our Presentation Evening will be held at 6.00pm on Thursday, 27 th Sept at the Spirit of Sport. Each junior who did the set number of races in the Summer Series will receive a fantastic, exclusive ‘Buff’ – especially designed for the juniors. The Buffs were funded by a most generous donation from John Wilcock, who will present them on the evening. Also, age group winners will receive a commemorative medal to be presented by Aidan Holgate (if he gets back from Uni on time!). Aidan is a great role model for junior athletes, whatever their sport. Aidan is excelling in cycling at present and can still run a great race time, if pushed. PLEASE COME AND GIVE ALL THE JUNIORS A WELL-DESERVED CHEER.

CLAYTON JUNIORS’ TRAINING Thursday Training; Spirit of Sport, 6.00-7.00. This is an indoor circuit session to improve speed and agility. Cost £2 Saturday Training; Spirit of Sport 11.30-1.00, outdoor endurance/hill session; bring appropriate clothing and footwear, cost £1. Age Limits for Training Sessions; There's no minimum age limit to be a junior member of Clayton Harriers (although the minimum age to compete in a Fell race is six years on race day) however we have decided to apply a minimum age to attend the coached training sessions. Juniors must be in school year 5 or above. This applies only to new recruits not to those already attending. The main reason for this change is that most juniors below this age limit struggle to maintain focus during structured coaching (especially endurance work) and gain little from the session. We appreciate that there are exceptions to this however, they are fairly rare.

EMAIL ADDRESS FOR JUNIORS:

[email protected]

We operate an email info system, with the latest race news and any last minute changes. If you are a parent and haven't already given me your email then let me know on the new address and I'll put you on the list. It's just for Clayton juniors, don't worry we won't be selling your details to anyone!

BILL SMITH MEMORIAL

Martin O’Rourke has created this beautifully simple memorial stone for Bill Smith. We intend to site it in Ogden Clough—in the wall as near as possible to CP4/11 of the Tour of Pendle, where Bill was a marshal on so many occasions.

We will put the stone in position on Sunday, 4th November . The plan is to meet on Barley car park at noon and take the stone as far up Ogden as we can by car. We will then need several strong members to carry the stone from the top reservoir up to CP4.

We are contacting Bill’s sisters to see if they, or any of Bill’s family can be present on the day. Once the stone is in place, we will return to Barley and gather in the Pendle Inn for a drink and a bite to eat.

If you want to take part, please contact Paul Healey or myself, so that we know roughly how many people to expect.

Thank you. Pete

5 years ago (October 2007 ) • Roger Dewhurst wrote that he intended to retire from organising the Pendleton Fell race next year – his 25 th involving himself and family. Roger reported that Bill Smith had covered the event in his ‘Stud Marks on the Summits’ when races took place in the village back in the 1920’s. Clayton took over the organising in 1951 when one of those involved was Gerry Charnley, a CleM Member, who tragically died a few years later on Striding Edge. George Brass was also involved and he changed it to a 5 miles x 1500 feet race so it could qualify as a championship event. COMMITTEE NEWS JULY & SEPTEMBER 17 members were in attendance at the July meeting; 18 in September. The main items discussed and decisions taken were: JULY • CleM is confirmed as the host of the 2013 FRA Presentation Evening. The evening will have an anticipated deficit of £1500 (FRA data) which we can claim back post the event. Debate about the evening’s entertain- ment agreed to retain the band used in previous years ‘The Picasso Brothers’. • The deposit has been paid for the 2013 Clayton presentation at Burnley FC. • The cost of dibber (SI Ident) hire/purchase has been sought, for a race of 300 entrants—£4.50 per runner. Pete Br to request quote for 300 dibbers, check points and software etc. Two options that we may consider are: share purchase with Bowland and Rossendale, or purchase and write off over 5yrs through race fee increase. • Juniors Agreed to support coaching for Laura Hesketh and George Pier. Summer series winners will receive medals engraved with names, presentation time and venue to be arranged. The purchase of a quantity of ‘Buffs’ was agreed, and designs for a Clayton logo were presented. Costs £6.60 each for 50 off. It was agreed that the design text would include ‘Clayton Le Moors Harriers’ but the final design rested with Marion and Andy A. • Road – Planning for 6 stage relay in September Fell – Teams entered for Ian Hodgson (3 x) and FRA relays (4 x ) XC – Proposal to enter as a club only the MLXC and not Red Rose league for the 2012/3 season was accepted 8-4. Individuals may still enter the RR league. Juniors are to be entered into the RR league. • The coaching sessions run by J Roche are well attended, we need to consider the future and possible deputies for the coaching staff. In light of this John to be invited to the October meeting to discuss future growth and direction and what we need to do to support as a committee. SEPTEMBER • There were a number of points raised regarding n/letter costs. ⇒ stop posting a newsletter at the club’s expense to every member who wishes ⇒ opt in on subs renewal so will gauge quantity post October payments, of those already paid 1/3 have opted for paper copy ⇒ make paper copies of the newsletter available (via a number of distributors) at training venues and races – difficult to control issued copies ⇒ publish the newsletter as a PDF on the website – it is now possible to print a PDF in booklet form like the current printed newsletter 30

⇒ allow members who wish to have a paper copy posted to supply SAEs (the level of management probably makes this impracticable) • Change of web address agreed. • Juniors: Jason Pier will coordinate the junior XC Membership forms need to include parental approval for photographs to be taken of the juniors The junior ‘Buff’ was displayed with the name of ‘CLAYTON le moors HARRI- ERS’ on it. Impressions very good and a fitting reward for those taking part in the junior races this summer. John Wilcock had made a £200 donation for these, MW to write letter of thanks. • Road –6 stage relay in September 3 teams entered each with blend of youth and experience. Fell – Teams entered for Ian Hodgson (4 x) and FRA relays (4 x). Note that the Pennine Bridle Way relay will not be run in future. XC – It was agreed that the MLXC at Towneleye would be the club championship race. • JR proposed the setting of objectives for the 2013 season so that all disciplines are represented strongly. Agreed the priority events would be Road. 6-stage in Sept, 12-stage in April and Masters in May XC. The 6 MLXC and Lancs in January Fell. Ian Hodgson Relay and FRA relays in October, and the 6 English Fell championship races throughout the year. It is the challenge to the Captains to arrange teams so that we provide the strongest teams for these events. • Agenda item for October – 2013 club champs • Website Being updated with a target of 1 st Sept, to be circulated prior via email. No up- date received, extended to end of September at which time if no revised format is available then agreed to go ‘externally’. Although the structure is important to the site it is the need for a Publicity Officer that is greater. Ads to be posted in web and n/letter. • Coaching J Roche presented his views on the coaching provided at the club. The 3 sessions are well attended Monday beginners, Tuesday at Worsthorne and Thursday, offering training for all ages and abilities. The progression of training is through the evening sessions leading to Saturday park runs onto the local Grand Prix series then wider field events. Future coaching support has been identified with funds available.
