Copy deadline for the November issue: Monday, 8th October 2 AGM REPORT For a second year in succession the highlight of the AGM was the election of 3 Honorary Members: Brian Leathley, Harry Manning and Michael Wrigley. Brian arrived late on the running scene, having spent many years playing rugby in Leeds. Brian is a tall man and, in his prime, had a long, distance-devouring stride, which he used to good effect on the road, cross country and fells. His forte, however, was long distance challenges. He completed the Joss Naylor Challenge on two occasions, the second at the age of 71 and he is still the oldest runner to make a first time completion of a Bob Graham Round (66 at the time, if I remember rightly). Unfortunately, Brian has been cruelly struck down by illness in recent years, but Christine was present at the AGM to accept honorary membership on Brian’s behalf. Harry has been, and remains, a stalwart of the club for 40 years, competing mainly in cross country and on the road, as well as serving on the committee and, currently, as our cross country statistician. Harry keeps a keen watch on results, scouring each issue of Athletics Weekly to enable him to nominate a host of contenders for ‘Run of the Month’. Michael also represented the club mainly on the road and cross country course. Like Harry, during his 30 years of membership Michael has put in untold numbers of hours, quietly, behind the scenes, on behalf of the club and its members. After a year’s ‘sabbatical’, he returned to the committee at the AGM. Despite reporting a substantial surplus for the 2011-12 financial year the Treasurer, Jim Hickie, expressed concern over increasing newsletter postage costs and an anticipated rise in the cost of individual athletes’ registration with England Athletics. The committee was examining a number of ways in which the increasing costs might be addressed without the need to increase subs. The AGM approved a number of amendments to the constitution, most of which related to the date of payment of subscriptions. Because so many members now pay their subscription by standing order on 1 st September [THANKYOU!] , there is not enough time to implement a change in subscription rates between the AGM and the due date. Therefore, your 2012-13 subscription will cover membership until 31 st December 2013, with your next subscription being due on 1 st January 2014. [That’s right – for this one time, you get an extra 4 months membership for no extra payment!] In due course, the Membership Secretary will write to you about the changes you need to make. The AGM also brought some changes to the Committee: Paul Archer is now the Cross Country Captain, while John Roche has stepped forward into the post of Road Captain and, as mentioned above, Michael Wrigley has returned to the committee. However, we are still seeking a Ladies’ Road Captain. A list of the club’s officers and committee members is on p5, while the list of captains is on the back page for easy reference. I hope you will give the committee and captains your full support during 2012-13. 3 Boothy’s Bit First, thank you very much for your continued support and confidence in me to carry on as Chairman for another year. Despite the occasional difficulties and disappointments, I gain a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction from the involvement with such a marvellous bunch of people. I am looking forward to the next year when I hope we will build on the recent progress that the club has made. Thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers, the juniors continue to go from strength to strength. We should soon have a new web site up and running, which will enable us to be much more inter-active and keep our members and the public informed more quickly. With regard to this, we urgently need a PUBLICITY OFFICER, whose main task will be to keep the website updated with reports on training, races, events and social activities. At the first meeting of the new committee we decided the priority events that we would like senior members to aim at in the next 12 months so that CleM maintains its standing on the local and national scene across 3 disciplines: Road Cross Country Fell Northern Combined Mid Lancs Cross Coun- Ian Hodgson Relay (Oct Autumn Relay try League (Oct 2012- 2012) (Sept 2012) March 2013) Northern 12 Stage Lancashire Cross Coun- UKA British Fell and Hill Relay (March 2013) try Championships (Jan Relay Championship (Oct 2013) 2012) National 12 Stage FRA English Champion- Relay (April 2013) ship (March-September 2013) British Master Road Relays (May 2013) Your captains will update members of the dates and details of all these events via the Newsletter and website. If you would like to take part in any of these events, please contact the relevant team captain. DON’T WAIT TO BE ASKED. I appreciate that, for newer, less experienced members, talk of local and national competition can be off-putting. But, any member, regardless of ability and experience, can take part in road races, Mid Lancs Cross Country League races and the FRA English Championship races. This month, I celebrate 25 years’ membership of Clayton Harriers, during which time I have found that the more involved I became, the more my running improved– and the more I enjoyed it. I urge every member – new and not-so-new - to attend training sessions regularly, take part in at least one road, cross-country and fell race, as well as volunteering to help at least one race, junior training session or Parkrun each year. The distance of 35.5 miles was covered in a leisurely 8hrs 20m, mostly in fine weather until Dunsop Bridge, where the rain set in for runners departing on the long, high stretch over to Quernmore. The splits are given below, and include some time taken at changeovers for changes of clothes and shoes, and for Pete Thompson to stoke up with food and water, as he was running the whole distance, Well done to him for that. He used his GPS to record times and distances. Schedule times were optimistic and we finished an hour behind, but the whole idea was to have a good time and enjoy the day, so speed didn’t matter.
