PAOLO DONADIO prof.ssa GABRIELLA DI MARTINO ANNO ACCADEMICO 2015/2016 1 Acknowledgements The last four years, during which I attended the PhD programme in English for Special Purposes at the ‘Federico II’ University of Naples, have probably been the hardest in my whole life. I have bumped against several obstacles and I have often thought about surrendering. However, the passion for what I do and the help of many precious people have helped me get to the end of this journey. Thanks to the funding sources received from the University of Naples ‘Federico II’ for the STAR Research Programme, I have been able to broaden the horizons of my research to fields that were still unexplored to me at the Aarhus University, under the guidance of Professor Jan Engberg. I have seen in him a mentor, he has guided me through my research with long, inspirational conversations, made of constructive comments and moments of personal exchange. I am grateful to Jan for believing in me and for supporting me. I am equally grateful to my main supervisor, Paolo Donadio. He has provided me academic guidance throughout the whole programme and always shown incredible patience and helpfulness by correcting my papers and presentations, or writing me letters of references with short notice; he has taught me how to ‘think’ as an academic, how to write down in words what I think and I honestly appreciate the person he is beyond the academic world. Today I know I would have never liked to have another supervisor. I am deeply grateful to all the Professors of the PhD programme: to Prof. Gabriella Di Martino for always encouraging me and being supportive in all my initiatives, including my periods of research abroad; to Prof. Vanda Polese for supporting me with her wise comments when I applied for the STAR programme; to Cristina Pennarola for always showing a sincere interest in what I was doing and more recently, for being my mentor in my new job at the ‘Accademia Aeronautica’. I am grateful to Giuditta Caliendo for showing me how to handle with students and with research and for giving me the possibility to work with her and acting as a ‘vice’-supervisor; special thanks also go to Prof. Julia Bamford for introducing me to the academic world. I thank Marco Venuti, for keeping me aware of the obstacles of academic research. I thank Antonella Napolitano, for being so kind and motherly to me despite not seeing me every day. I could never forget to thank the precious Mena Vilardi, who has always reminded us of our institutional duties and always been kind and helpful, together with Cinzia Della Monica’s support. I am moved while I am writing how thankful I am to all the other PhD colleagues. Special thanks go to Eleonora Esposito and Antonio Compagnone for sharing this adventure with me from the very first moment. I would also like to thank Lina Ferrante, who was the best companion I could have for the first year. Heartfelt thanks go to Annarita Magliacane, whom I have known since before the PhD and has been a constant support; to Antonio Fruttaldo and Francesca Raffi, two beautiful and brilliant people who have shared with me the emotions of this last year in particular; to Angela Zottola and all the others for always being there and being of mutual support. I feel particularly indebted to two other people: Alba Sole Zollo, for being the ‘link’ between the young PhD students and the ‘big’ Professors ever since I started, and to Cristina Nisco, who has always been an example to follow. She probably does not know it, but I am particularly grateful to her for the time she told 2 on the phone not to give up. She was right. Finally, thank you Cristina Aiezza, for being the best friend I have found thanks to this PhD programme, for supporting me in every moment and for always being on the same wavelength. I am also grateful to those who have been my ‘second family’ for six months: all the PhD students at the Aarhus University (Heidi, Thomas, Mathias, Nicolai, Casper and so on) and all the members of the Research Group in Knowledge Communication, for always making me feel like home and giving me academic and personal support. I have no words to thank Adrian Bedford, who was an essential figure to write this thesis, for his ‘linguistic’ support. A (perhaps unexpected) ‘thankyou’ goes to Antonella, for being on my side in the first two years. I will never forget how supportive you have been and how much you have helped me.
