Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the emergence of Canadian popular music and the development of music genres that enjoyed the greatest popularity in Canada. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to an investigation of conditions connected to the relation of Canadian music and Canadian sense of identity and uniqueness. Further, an account of Canadian radio broadcasting and induction of regulating acts which influenced music production in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century are given. Moreover, the effectiveness and contributions of these regulating acts are summarized and evaluated. Last but not least, the main characteristics of the music style of a female singer songwriter Joni Mitchell are examined.

  • A City "... Waiting for the Sunrise " : Toronto in Song and Sound*
A City "... Waiting for the Sunrise " : Toronto in Song and Sound* Michael J. Doucet Abstract: One aspect of urban culture is examined to evaluate Toronto's position within the urban hierarchy, namely, the production of songs and sounds about the city. Although much music has been performed and created in Toronto over the years, and many songs have been urritten about a variety of features of life in the city, the musical images of Toronto remain largely unknown beyond its borders—even to many of the city's own residents. If Toronto is a "world-class city," the evidence for such a claim would have to be found on other dimensions than the one explored here. No one ever wrote / A single note / About Toronto. — Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster (19%) I find that lately, I'm missing old Toronto, Where bass is strong and drums are full of fire. — from the Lenny Breau song "New York City" (1987) No nation can exist by the balance sheet alone. Stories, song, dance, music, art and the rest are the lifeblood of a country, the cultural images defining a people just as surely as their geography and the gross national product. — Robert Lewis, editor of Maclean's (19%) Interestingly, though, we don't seem to have an immediately identifiable style. The last time anyone spoke about a 'Toronto Sound' [former Mayor] Alan Lamport was booting hippies out of Yorkville. Unlike a Nashville or Manchester, there isn't any one thing that makes you say 'That's Toronto' -- Bob Mackowycz, writer and broadcaster (1991) Toronto itself doesn't have a distinctive civic culture.

Ambassador Theatre, St Louis, MO; June 5, 1974 Thanks to Cyrus for sharing the show at Dime. Cyrus noted: Mark Doble’s authoritative and comprehensive essay “Burton Through The Boot- legs” has the following to say about this particular recording: “The Live At The Ambassador Theatre bootleg may in fact be the finest bootleg of the Guess Who in existence. Recorded from a stereo FM Broadcast, the recording includes 19 songs, all of the hits as well as some notable gems such as an impromptu rendition of Bobby Darin’s “Artificial Flowers” by Burton while Bill’s bass amp was being repaired. (One wonders if it was opportunities like this that provided Burt with the idea of performing in his UP CLOSE AND ALONE format of the mid-1990s.) The performances on this recording are outstanding. Of particular note are the versions of “Straighten Out”, “Self Pity” and “Orly”, where Burton lets loose as only Burton can. At the conclusion of the broadcast, the announcer played back a short a cappella excerpt of the “Leave It To Beaver” television theme sung by Burton and the boys in the studio the previous day. Overall, the sound quality of this bootleg is spectacular. If there is a “Must Have” in the collection of Guess Who bootlegs, this is it! This show was also one of the last concerts the Guess Who would play with Kurt Winter and Donnie McDougall in the lineup. The pressures between the folks had been boiling over for a while now, and they would shortly depart from the band to be replaced by guitarist extraordinaire Domenic Troiano...” - Info thanks to “rocksteady1” + + + + + Lineage: KSHE FM Radio Broadcast > ? > CDR > EAC Secure > FLAC Frontend 8 MP3 Version Disc 1 Disc 2 01.
