FISH KILL IN LAKES HIGHLY ANTICIPATED An unfortunate side effect of the recent extremely low temperatures (low for South Florida) is the high probability of fish kills to be seen in local waterway and lakes. Fish, just like people, need oxygen to survive. When temperatures drop below 50 degrees, fish can suffocate from what is called low DO. DO is oxygen dissolved in water, which fish need to survive. Many fish in South Florida fresh water are not native to Florida. Most come from tropical climates and are less adaptive to live here, highly impacted by the cold weather. When temperatures drop these species cannot survive. Even during the worst fish kills, some fish will survive and eventually replenish the fish population Are all impacts of fish kills negative? No. Impacts of these fish kills can be viewed as both positive and negative. Two positive impacts are that native freshwater fish species are largely unaffected by cold temperatures. Primarily, only exotic freshwater fish die-off and are generally considered undesirable. Do dead fish have to be disposed of? No. The fish will be consumed by other animals or eventually decompose naturally. If there are a number of fish the Weston Public Works Department will come out and clean them up. Call 954-385-2600.
