College Sports Madness Big Sky Second Team

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED BLAKE PORTER Senior, OL • The Big Sky Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference have been the FCS’ most suc- College Sports Madness Big Sky Second Team cessful conferences in recent history, and in 2017, bragging rights are on the line with the announcement of the Challenge Series. GRIFFIN ROEHLER Sophomore, K • The two leagues will match up eight times this season, with NAU set to compete in two of All-Big Sky Preseason Team them versus Western Illinois on Sept. 9 and Illinois State on Oct. 7. The Lumberjacks are College Sports Madness Big Sky First Team one of two Big Sky schools - North Dakota being the other - to have multiple MVFC teams on their 2017 slate. TYLER SHANK Senior, OL • NAU’s Oct. 7 matchup with Illinois State could have serious implications on the Challenge All-Big Sky Preseason Team Series as it will be the eighth and final head-to-head game between the two leagues. GOT THE HAIR, GOT THE LEG • When the ’Jacks get lined up for a kick - be it a field goal, extra point or kickoff - sophomore 2017 WEEKLY HONORS/ACCOLADES Griffin Roehler takes center stage. Known for his flowing blonde locks, Roehler proved last season that he has the right leg to match it during a phenomenal freshman campaign. • Following an impressive line of NAU kickers in recent history, Roehler started on the right path in her first collegiate season, leading the team with 83 points scored. He converted 13-of-16 field goal attempts for an 81.2 percent clip and made all but one of 45 extra points. • Roehler’s list of 2016 accolades include being named to the All-Big Sky First Team as a placekicker, College Sports Madness All-America Third Team and HERO Sports’ FCS All-Freshman Team.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT US • While sophomore Case Cookus and senior Emmanuel Butler have garnered the preseason hype, NAU’s offense has a number of returning playmakers which should allow the Lumber- jacks to light up the scoreboard all season long. • With Butler occupying defenses’ attention on the outside, senior Elijah Marks is free to patrol the middle of the field - an area that he skillfully controls. Starting last season with a bang with an 87-yard catch and run to the paydirt against Arizona State, Marks set his season in motion. Earning a spot on the All-Big Sky Third Team, he had a career-high 770 receiving yards on 43 receptions and seven touchdowns last season - all totals that only trailed his classmate. He averaged 17.9 yards per catch, which actually led the ’Jacks, while also leading the team with 326 kick return yards. • Juniors William Morehand and Jonathan Baldwin also provide Cookus with receiving weapons. Morehand was third on the team in receiving yards (456) and receiving touch- downs (5) and was a dangerous return threat, ranking 14th in the FCS in punt returns on his way to All-Big Sky Honorable Mention honors. Baldwin started eight games at tight end and recorded three touchdowns and has not missed a game in his first two seasons. • The weapons are not limited to only the air though, as sophomore Joe Logan showed he can run with the rock last season. An all-conference honorable mention pick as a freshman, Lo-
