Questions about our Faith from parish family members. Question #44. Why do some people hold hands, and some do not during the Our Father? I will not be able to truly know the reasons some do hold hands during the Our Father, and some do not, however, I may speculate or guess, or theorize in order to give an answer. Speculatively, the reason some people hold hands during the Our Father is because they are typically family members who like to, or because they are influenced by our Protestant brothers and sisters who, in their tradition, typically join hands to pray. In the Catholic tradition, we clasp or fold our hands together to pray. My guess is that the reason people do not hold hands during the Lord’s Prayer is because they understand it is theologically or liturgically improper for the Mass, are concerned about germs, or because I asked them not to about three and a half years ago (for the sake of the Mass and unity of posture).

Question #45. May divorced Catholics who have children will not get an because they feel it will invalidate their children. Would you clarify this fallacy? Yes, it is a false understanding to believe that an annulment will invalidate children’s status. never have any effect on the status of children from a . Once children are born of a marriage, despite it ending in and annulment, the children are always from a valid marital union and their status is unchanged – they are always “valid” children and the annulment does not change that.

Once again, generally speaking, an annulment is a formal investigation, formally requested by at least one of the spouses, into discovering the grounds for a defective consent at the time of the wedding once the marriage has ended in divorce. If the investigation results in a “positive” conclusion, then a declaration of nullity will be issued in a letter of that states the Church has dissolved the marital union from the date of the decree issued forward; declarations of nullity never go backward in time, only from the date forward (thus the children are always born of a valid marriage). The Church does have the power to dissolve a marital union since it does have the authority over marriage (as Jesus Christ instituted it as a sacrament at the wedding feast at Cana), but only in the case of discovering grounds for defective consent at the conclusion of an annulment proceeding. There are four types or kinds of annulments that can be used depending upon the circumstances. The goal of the Church’s proceedings is to free a person to remarry in the Church, in Christ, once again.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Preface for this weekend’s readings to ponder. “Because of Christ, Christian death has a positive meaning: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” “The saying is sure: if we have died with him, we will also live with him.” What is essentially new about Christian death is this: through Baptism, the Christian has already “died with Christ” sacramentally, in order to live a new life; and if
