And at the center of his job as a professional in the Kansas City (Mo.) School District, he offers a penance for how he lived during his first life – a life of rebellion, self- destruction, gangs, drug and alcohol abuse – decades ago in East Los Angeles. Cordoba, the executive director of the Office of Student Support and Community Services for the district, spoke to a group of about 25 invited students and parents in mid-October at La Galeria. His message is the hard lesson he suffered through – a lesson he wants Kansas City youths to realize before it’s too late. Cordoba was born in Tijuana, Mexico, but grew up in East L.A. during the early 1960s, a time when overt racism and discrimination were the norm and the insults and suspicion were everyday occurrences.
