In the 1980s, she said, students exercised more caution because they often could connect a face of someone they knew who had died from AIDS. Now, she said, she has noticed that students no longer take AIDS as seriously, despite its continu- ing presence and threat at the University, because newer medica- tions delay its onset in people who have contracted HIV. “Prior to the early ‘90s, indi- viduals died within weeks to months of discovering they had HIV,” Quinlan said. “There’s com- placency because it has become a chronic disease with the amount of knowledge we have about the virus. It’s not as feared as it once was.
