(Burchfield) Daily Transactions 1 Most likely Detroit Tiger to be traded? Probably J.D. Martinez October 20, 2016 By Anthony Fenech/ Detroit Free Press The Detroit Tigers aren’t in a position to spend more money. General manager Al Avila said as much on Tuesday afternoon, saying with certainty the team would not be a big player in the free agent market. Avila wants the team to get younger. He wants more financial flexibility. And this off-season, he will approach the trade market with a number of high-priced, uber-productive chips, none more likely to get moved – if a move is made – than rightfielder J.D. Martinez. Martinez is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2017 season. He is due $11.75 million. “I don’t foresee any talks of a long-term contract at this point,” Avila said. “In saying that, we’re going to keep an open mind in what possibilities come across this winter, this coming summer. I’m not going to rule out that we wouldn’t consider a long-term deal, but sitting here today, we’re not thinking that way right now.

Detroit Tigers Clips Wednesday, October 12, 2016 Detroit Free Press Tigers' JaCoby Jones, collects two hits in Arizona Fall League opener (Fenech) MLive.com Tigers 2017 payroll Q&A: A challenging offseason ahead (Woodbery) MLB.com Tigers prospects in action as Fall League gets under way (Callis) Daily Transactions 1 Tigers' JaCoby Jones, collects two hits in Arizona Fall League opener October 12, 2016 By Anthony Fenech/ Detroit Free Press The Arizona Fall League started Tuesday. Seven Tigers prospects are participating in the off-season league for the Salt River Rafters. Among them are a few notable names, including JaCoby Jones, who could play his way onto the big league roster after spring training. Jones, 24, was called up to the Detroit Tigers in September after hitting .257 between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, with seven total home runs and 13 stolen bases. Jones is the organization’s priority player, guaranteeing him plenty of playing time. He will be joined on the Rafters by leftfielder Christin Stewart, who recently was named the Tigers’ minor league offensive player of the year. Stewart, the team’s second-round draft pick in 2015, hit .255 with 30 home runs between Class A Lakeland and Erie this season. In the AFL opener Tuesday against Peoria, Jones hit cleanup and started in centerfield and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a stolen base and a run scored as the teams tied after 10 innings. Stewart was placed eighth in left and went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. Offensively, Jones and Stewart will be joined by catcher Grayson Greiner.

  • TEXAS RANGERS CLIPS –July 17, 2012
TEXAS RANGERS CLIPS –July 17, 2012 TEXASRANGERS.COM Feliz makes headway in first rehab start By Christian Corona 07/16/12 FRISCO, Texas -- Neftali Feliz's first rehab start was pushed back to Monday in Double-A Frisco after his scheduled outing with Triple-A Round Rock got rained out Sunday. When Feliz took the mound in a game for the first time in nearly two months, he got off to a shaky start against Double-A San Antonio. The right-hander retired the first batter he faced, but he walked two of the next three. Then Edinson Rincon hit a ground ball up the middle that was backhanded by second baseman Leury Garcia, who threw across his body and wide of first baseman Chris McGuinness. That infield single allowed Dean Anna to score an unearned run off Feliz on a play that could have ended the inning. With runners on the corners, Feliz fanned Ali Solis, his second strikeout of the inning, to prevent any further damage. "I had a long time without pitching off a mound in a live game," Feliz said. "But I was trying to practice on all my pitches, not only offspeed pitches. I was trying to get outs as quick as I could." Feliz was much more efficient in the second inning. Feliz retired the side and struck out the last two hitters he faced, getting Rymer Liriano looking at a 79-mph curveball while Jeudy Valdez couldn't hold up his check swing on a 77-mph curve in the dirt. After throwing 29 pitches in the first inning, Feliz threw only 11 in the second, all but one for a strike.

Tyler Flowers recorded a career-high three doubles, including one that chased Marlins starter Wei-Yin Chen in the sixth. Erick Aybar greeted Dunn with a game-tying infield single, and Snyder followed with his two-run triple. Chase d'Arnaudcapped the sixth inning with a RBI single for the Braves. Miami scored a pair of two-out runs in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, but Mauricio Cabrera retired pinch-hitter Cole Gillespie on a lineout to record his first save. "It was a little too eventful, but we won the game, and that's the main thing,' said Braves manager Brian Snitker, whose team has gone 7-2 against the Marlins and 20-50 against all other opponents. Justin Bour provided the Marlins an early lead with a three-run homer off Mike Foltynewicz in the second. Foltynewicz did not return after rain halted play during the middle of the third inning for 68 minutes. But the Marlins stayed with Chen, who allowed three hits, including Freddie Freeman's RBI triple, during Atlanta's two-run third. Mike Dunn surrendered four hits, including Brandon Snyder's go-ahead two-run triple and Chase d'Arnaud's decisive two-out RBI single, in Atlanta's four-run sixth.
