One-Man Star Wars Trilogy Will Take Starlight Indoors Audiences on a Fun, Frenetic Trip to a Galaxy Far, Far Away Local Press Contact: Molly Sommerhalder Phone: 414-273-7121 ext. 399 Email: [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE One-Man Star Wars Trilogy Will Take Starlight Indoors Audiences on a Fun, Frenetic Trip to a Galaxy Far, Far Away Coming to the Marcus Center’s Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall on November 3 MILWAUKEE, WI (Wednesday, August 15, 2018)-Created and brought to life on stage by Canadian actor Charles Ross, One-Man Star Wars Trilogy is just what it seems – a live solo performance of the original trilogy of Star Wars movies (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi)! The multi-talented Ross stuns audiences by singlehandedly playing all the characters, singing the music, flying the ships, fighting the battles and condensing the Star Wars plots into just over 60 minutes of live entertainment. Convinced that he has the best job in the world, “professional geek,” Ross has delivered his rapid-fire recap more than 4,000 times to audiences in 500 cities across four continents over the past 15 years. It all began at the age of 6 when Ross saw Star Wars with his father. When he was later able to tape the movie on his family’s VCR, he would wake every morning at 5:30 a.m. to watch it. At the University of Victoria, Ross befriended T.J. Dawe; the duo soon collaborated on the creation and arduous rehearsal of many treatments of what would become One-Man Star Wars Trilogy. With Ross performing and Dawe directing, the show made its Toronto Fringe Festival debut in 2002. It toured to Orlando, Fla., Vancouver, B.C., and Chicago. Then, in 2005, the show hit a high point – a performance at Star Wars Celebration III in Indianapolis for an audience of 35,000 ecstatic fans in Indianapolis. One-Man Star Wars Trilogy is recommended for Star Wars fans of all ages. NOTE: Audience members are invited to wear costumes, but no masks or weapons are allowed. One-Man Star Wars Trilogy is performed with permission of Lucasfilm Ltd. All “Star Wars” elements are property of Lucasfilm Ltd. All rights reserved. This one night only performance will be at the Marcus Center’s Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall on Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 pm. Tickets go on sale on Friday, August 17 at 12:00 pm at the Marcus Center Box Office and can be purchased in person at 929 North Water Street, Downtown Milwaukee, by phone at 414-273-7206 or online at MarcusCenter.org or Ticketmaster.com. It has been accepted for inclusion in Electronic Theses and Dissertations by an authorized administrator of Digital Commons @ ACU. ABSTRACT Mythic narratives exert a powerful influence over societies, and few mythic narratives carry as much weight in modern culture as the Star Wars franchise. Disney’s 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm opened the door for new films in the franchise. 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the second of these films, takes place in the fictional hours and minutes leading up to the events portrayed in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Changes to the fundamental myths underpinning the Star Wars narrative and the unique connection between these film have created important implications for the public memory of the original film. I examine these changes using Campbell’s hero’s journey and Lawrence and Jewett’s American monomyth. In this thesis I argue that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was likely conceived as a means of updating the public memory of the original 1977 film.

“Mama! Darth Vader vroeg me hoe ik heette!”

Office of Graduate Student Services, Wesleyan University . Wesleyan ♦ University . THE POWER OF THE FORCE: RACE, GENDER, AND COLONIALISM IN THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE By John Paul Pianka Faculty Advisor: Professor Robert Steele A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Wesleyan University in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Master of Arts . Middletown, Connecticut May 2013 i Acknowledgements Thank you, first and foremost, to Bob Steele, my advisor for this project and a professor who every day challenges me to second guess my surroundings, my culture, and even my favorite things in the world (as evidenced by this thesis). My first class with you, a class in which I initially enrolled hoping it would be an easy A, fundamentally changed the way I look at movies, television, and the world itself. Five classes with you wasn’t enough. Thank you as well to all the professors of the Psychology Department, who helped me find and cultivate my academic passions. Thank you also for allowing me to spend one more year here, learning and writing about something near and dear to my heart. I could not have written this thesis without the enduring support of my friends, particularly those in Alpha Delta Phi. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find anyone who shared my passion for Star Wars enough to help me critique my ideas, but I was happy to find many friends here whose passion for Star Wars as well as Cultural Psychology far exceeds my own. A particular thank you to Chelsea Goldsmith, for constantly keeping me from being lazy and making sure I didn’t attend Celebration VI alone; to Victor Pesola, whose knowledge on the subject makes me feel considerably less terrible about the time I’ve spent in the Star Wars universe (and on the Wesleyan campus for that matter!); to Richard Fessler, for the numerous Clone Wars marathons we shared under the pretense of “thesis research;” and to fellow sci- fi film aficionados Jake Lane and Will Donald, for five years of great conversations, many of which made it into this thesis one way or another.
