She steals 30,000 euros from his house. The money is meant as a bonus for Terho Väisänen, a police officer who is in cahoots with Sokolov. When Natalia has got the money in her bag, suddenly there are noises at the front door. She dashes through the house and into the back garden, but Sokolov shoots her and she falls into a snowdrift. The money in her bag becomes discoloured from her blood. February 29th, in the small hours, Chapter 2: Three high-school students, Elisa, Tuukka and Kasper, have come to the school late at night. Tuukka’s father is the headteacher, so he managed to get the key. They are under the influence of alcohol and drugs. They go into the school’s darkroom to wash off some blood- covered 500-euro banknotes and leave them there to dry. February 29th, Chapter 3: Lumikki Andersson wakes up in her rented studio flat and goes to school. Lumikki’s name is the Finnish version of Snow White, the fairy tale character. Lumikki goes into the darkroom to collect her thoughts, as she does before the start of each school day. She finds the banknotes there, but leaves them there while she thinks about what to do. Chapter 4: Lumikki decides to tell the school’s headteacher about the banknotes, but when she goes into the darkroom, the notes have vanished. Lumikki realises that Tuukka, whom she met in the corridor, had the money in his rucksack. Lumikki secretly follows Tuukka into the coffee bar, where Elisa and Kasper are waiting. From the trio’s conversation, Lumikki realises that the money ended up in their possession by chance on the night of Elisa’s party. Chapter 5: Lumikki leaves the coffee bar to go home, but this time Tuukka secretly follows here and starts to threaten Lumikki, saying that she must not tell anyone about the money. Lumikki promises she will not get involved in the matter in any way. March 1st, Chapter 6: Boris Sokolov gets a threatening phone call at night from Terho Väisänen, who is asking where his money is. Sokolov thinks Väisäinen, the policeman, is trying to cheat him. Natalia and Väisänen had a relationship, and Sokolov thinks they plotted Natalia’s attempted escape together. Sokolov assumes that Terho Väisänen is trying to extort more money from him as revenge for Natalia’s murder. Sokolov knows that the blood-stained money was thrown into Väisänen’s front garden in a plastic bag. Chapter 7: Lumikki intends to skive off school and spend the day collecting her thoughts. But then Elisa phones her in a panic and asks Lumikki to come over to her house because she is afraid. Lumikki reluctantly goes over to Elisa’s house, which is an expensive place in a posh neighbourhood. Elisa starts to tell her what happened at the party and how they found a strange plastic bag in the garden and, as they were high on drugs, decided it would be a good idea to keep the money. Chapter 8: Boris Sokolov and his henchmen are lying in wait for Elisa, Terho Väisänen’s daughter, at their home. They intend to kidnap her briefly in order to get Väisänen to drop his extortion demands. Lumikki leaves the house wearing a red woolly hat she borrowed from Elisa, because her own hat is no longer wearable. Chapter 9: Sokolov and his men chase after Lumikki, who they think is Elisa. Lumikki manages to fool them and get away. She realises that the men thought she was Elisa. She also understands that the money must have been meant for Elisa’s father. He decides to send Väisänen an invitation to the legendary Polar Bear’s party in Natalia’s name. Sokolov plans to put pressure on Väisänen at the party to drop his threats. Elisa asks Lumikki to come over to her house again. This time, Tuukka and Kasper are there as well. Chapter 11: Lumikki, Elisa, Tuukka and Kasper search Terho Väisänen’s home office in the hope of finding out some information. They do not find anything. Lumikki starts to search his computer to see if it will reveal anything. Chapter 12: Terho Väisänen is on his way home, having received some unexpected time off at lunch. As he drives home, he thinks about his relationship with Natalia and tries to get to the Polar Bear’s party so he can speak to both Natalia and the Polar Bear. Just then, Lumikki finds some hidden photos of Natalia on Väisänen’s computer. Chapter 13: Lumikki has managed to hack into Terho Väisänen’s anonymous email account, where the invitation from ‘Natalia’ to the Polar Bear’s party has just arrived. Kasper is aware that the Polar Bear is a legendary, shadowy figure who pulls a lot of the strings behind the scenes. Just then, Terho Väisänen comes back home. The others go and hide upstairs, but Lumikki stays in his office to shut down the computer. She just manages to stay hidden from him. Chapter 14: Lumikki promises to secretly follow Terho Väisänen, Elisa’s father, the next day. March 3rd, Chapter 15: Lumikki observes Terho Väisänen at the bus station opposite the police station, as well as Sokolov’s Estoniaen henchman. When Väisänen leaves, the Estonian follows him first, and Lumikki realises two things: it was the Estonian who chased her earlier, and they are now both trailing the same man. Terho Väisänen has received instructions from the Polar Bear to look for a mobile phone that has been hidden inside a cistern in the men’s toilets in Tampere Hall. He will receive more instructions via the phone. Chapter 16: Väisänen goes into the men’s toilets in Tampere Hall, followed by the Estonian. Lumikki hurriedly disguises herself as a boy and follows them in. Terho Väisänen fishes the mobile phone out of the toilet cistern and goes to the park next to the hall to make a call. Lumikki and the Estonian eavesdrop on him. Lumikki finds out that Väisänen is being invited to the Polar Bear’s party over the phone. Suddenly, the Estonian spots Lumikki, and he realises she is the same girl he chased previously, thinking she was Väisänen’s daughter. Chapter 17: The Estonian chases Lumikki through a cemetery, where she is running for her life. The Estonian stumbles on an icy road and loses his temper. He shoots at Lumikki, but the bullet whizzes past her. Lumikki manages to get away. The Estonian goes home, where the Polar Bear’s men are waiting for him. They execute him, because the Estonian has endangered the whole enterprise by firing his gun in a public place in the middle of the day. March 4th, Chapter 18: Elisa helps Lumikki get dressed up and does her hair and makeup to make her look like her namesake for the Polar Bear’s party. Besides prominent invited guests, there will be young female escorts at the party dressed according to the party’s theme, which is ‘fairy tales’ on this occasion. Once Lumikki has her party outfit on, Elisa also gives her a long black quilted coat with a hood to wear. He intends to tell them this at the party. A car comes to collect Väisänen. Kasper distracts the chauffeur, and Tuukka manages to hide Lumikki in the boot of the car. Väisänen arrives, and the car drives off to the party. Chapter 20: The car arrives at the site of the party, and Lumikki eventually manages to get out of the boot and into the party. Chapter 21: Lumikki wanders round the glitzy party and tries to avoid an older man who wants to get to know her better. There are prominent politicians and other important people from the financial world present as well. Chapter 22: Natalia Smirnova’s body is lying in a chest freezer, where Boris Sokolov put it in order to scare Terho Väisänen into keeping quiet.
