Cocheco Quilters. Guild

P.O. Box 1153, Dover NH 03820 www.cochecoquilters.org April 2007 President’s Message

Greetings Quilters,

Since I was on vacation last month, I was not able to attend our first meeting at the McConnell Center, but I have heard nothing but very good remarks about both the space and the meeting. My thanks to Nancy Ekola for presiding at the meeting and to Cindy McKenna and Sharon LaClair for setting up the penny sale and to the several people who acted as greeters at the doors to guide people to the new meeting space. There are many people who are active at each meeting and help to make the meetings run smoothly. Thanks to those of you who have been providing desserts at the meetings too.

I would also like to thank the members of the board for their faithful attendance at the board meetings and their full participation in the issues and activities of the Guild.

I feel the enthusiasm and cooperation from you members this year and I am proud to be a member of this Guild.

Looking forward to seeing you at our April meeting,

Pat Craig April 17 Meeting Info

Is creating a landscape quilt on your project list? Then be sure to check out this month’s new addition to our library: Beautifully Embellished Landscapes, 125 Tips & Techniques to Create Stunning Quilts by Joyce R. Becker. Becker’s book is full of ideas to launch your creative designs. She shares how to build your landscape, add special effects, and create realistic elements. If you have been wondering how to create a quilt from a favorite photograph this is your resource. Techniques for using paints, markers, threadwork, overlays and more are included. There are even seven tree patterns.

Photos clearly illustrate Becker’s techniques and her explanations are straightforward.

At this writing, we are very close to having a space to store our Library cart at the McConnell Center. Since we don’t have a dedicated space for the cart yet, the cart may not be at April’s meeting. If you have borrowed library books, please return them this month so others can have a chance to take them out. Our new releases are all out on loan. These may be the only books available for this month.

As always, we welcome suggestions. If you have a request for a book to borrow, contact me and I will try and bring it to the meeting. [email protected]

MARY ANDREWS was born in Portland, Me, which is the state in which she prefers to stay. She attended Cony High School, Maine Medical School of Nursing, and new England College. Before retirement, she worked as a nurse, with a jam and jelly business on the side. Her patients probably enjoyed some of her sweets! Mary was a member of the Maine Legislature for 8 years, and said she had many requests for quilts for charities, and thinks she may have made over 100 during that time.

Her first husband died when she was 27 and her brother introduced her to Allan, her present husband. He is now retired, and they make their home in York, Maine. Sadly, one child passed away, but they have two living in York, two in NH, and one really spread the wings and lives in Minnesota!

Their two "mongrel" cats, Spooky and Bella, enjoy digging in the garden as Mary plants, and need to learn to dig weeds only! They enjoy listening to Mary play the organ and piano, two favorite activities of hers, but do not go to the folk group at her church where she also plays. They prefer to stay home and look for the ball of yarn she has out when she knits, and are patiently waiting for her to finish her new hobby, hooking a rug. They show no interest in the "booze" pies that Mary makes for restaurants.

A "Quilt in a Day" class, 15 years ago, started Mary's fascination with quilts. Of course, it took 8 years for that particular quilt to be finished, but I feel that she made some in between the start of this and the final binding! Mary's dislike of putting the three layers together also may have contributed to the delay! Quilting is her therapy, as it is for so many of us. She enjoys hand and machine piecing and hand applique.

Her favorite sport to watch is football; she enjoys historical books as well as any written by Tom Clancy. Mary enjoys all types of music, her favorite color is green, and favorite food is fish, preferably finnan haddie. Spooky and Bella can understand that!

Mary is also head of the Ambulance Association of York, President of Evergreen Quilt Guild, and is on four town committees. I have a feeling that she is a very well organized person, and we welcome you as a new member to our Guild, Mary. Make sure you make time for us!

STEVEN COUTURE joined the guild recently, and is an owner of a quilt shop in Rochester. He was born at Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover, and has also lived in Massachusetts. He went to UNH and majored in Russian, which brought about a student exchange, and he spent two years in Russia! That may have led to the year he spent in the Czech Republic teaching English.!! He now lives in Rochester, and spends many hours at the shop choosing fabrics, making and machine quilting quilts and other quilted items, and teaching classes.

He has three "mutt" cats, Ayyur which is an Arabian name, Misha from the Russian language, and, not to be outdone, "Hezzy" the old English Hezekiah! They stay home and practice international diplomacy while Steven is at the shop.

According to Steven, his mother, also a member of the Guild, "forced him" into quilting. It could not have been too long ago, as he said he did not know how to sew two years ago, and he is self taught. All I can say is that his powers of observation (mother's work) had to be excellent over the years! He claims his mother is not a teacher... (for him?) He prefers machine piecing and machine quilting and is perfecting the latter. He likes working with the half square triangle as he feels it is so versatile. The least favorite part is the quilting or finishing design. He prefers to make twin size quilts.

Steven enjoys playing tennis ,- his favorite actress is Meryl Streep,- Hans Christian Anderson piques his interest as an author, and he likes dance music. His favorite color is black, as he feels it adds "spark" to items. His favorite foods are those he prepares himself.

Russian, French, and Spanish are some of the languages he speaks. He loves to travel. At the moment he is interested in designing quilt patterns and building a web site with videos and demonstrations and on line classes. He has made quite a few quilts and does stippling machine quilting "on the side".

We welcome you to the Guild, Steven, and have enjoyed seeing some of the work you do. Keep coming!

PART 4 FINISHING UP

Shown below are two options for assembling your quilt. The diagram on the left is specific for the cutting directions given in Part 2 of the instructions. The alternate diagram on the right is shown with star blocks, but you would substitute blocks described in Part 3. If you are feeling creative, make up your own quilt assembly and astonish us. As stated in Part 1, feel free to enlarge your quilt by adding background blocks and/or pieced blocks of various sizes and additional borders.

PLEASE NOTE: If you choose the alternate plan, notice that the background blocks are numbered differently: for those marked “E” on the right, use “F” from the cutting instructions; those marked “B” on the right, use “C” from the cutting instructions. There are no D or E background blocks used, and there are more pieced blocks required.
