Cocheco Quilters Guild Guild Meeting: 3Rd Tuesday Each Month, January–November; Mcconnell Center, Dover, NH Cocheco Quilters. Guild P.O. Box 1153, Dover NH 03820 www.cochecoquilters.org April 2007 President’s Message Greetings Quilters, Since I was on vacation last month, I was not able to attend our first meeting at the McConnell Center, but I have heard nothing but very good remarks about both the space and the meeting. My thanks to Nancy Ekola for presiding at the meeting and to Cindy McKenna and Sharon LaClair for setting up the penny sale and to the several people who acted as greeters at the doors to guide people to the new meeting space. There are many people who are active at each meeting and help to make the meetings run smoothly. Thanks to those of you who have been providing desserts at the meetings too. I would also like to thank the members of the board for their faithful attendance at the board meetings and their full participation in the issues and activities of the Guild. I feel the enthusiasm and cooperation from you members this year and I am proud to be a member of this Guild. Looking forward to seeing you at our April meeting, Pat Craig April 17 Meeting Info Program: "What Is This Fascination With Baltimore Album Quilts?" Elly Sienkiewicz has been designing and making quilts, studying, writing and teaching on quiltmaking for several decades. She is an internationally-known expert on the Baltimore Album style quilts. Consumed by the question of why we all so love quiltmaking, she is a delightful teacher and an inspiring lecturer. Her lecture on April 17 will be a fast paced slide presentation featuring artistic and historic aspects, symbolism and needlework techniques to tell the intriguing tale of why these quilts are so highly valued. Please join us for a most exciting evening in our world of quilting. And see www.ellysienkiewicz.com for lots more information on Elly and her work. Directions to the new meeting place, the McConnell Center: Our meetings are held at the McConnell Center on Locust Street, Dover, NH. This building is to the right of the Dover Public Library. You enter the drive, which has a statue on a pedestal, between the two buildings and park behind the Library. Please enter the McConnell Center using the door marked '2' which is near the back of the library and go down the stairs. Upon exiting the double doors, go down the hall which is almost opposite the staircase. At the end of this hall turn left. The cafeteria, our meeting space, is at the end of this second hall. There are several handicap parking places along the side of the McConnell Center near the library. There is also limited handicap access from St. Thomas Street where you enter the building using the door marked '7'. The cafeteria is on the same level as St. Thomas Street and just a short distance from door '7'. St. Thomas Street is the street where the Dover District Court is located and has only one way access. Refreshments: If your last name begins with the letter “F” or “G”, please bring 1 - 2 dozen cookies or similar nibbles for the break. Fat Quarter Exchange: When you arrive, look for the Fat Quarter basket at the table in the back of the room. Leave your fat quarter beside the basket and put your name on a piece of paper in the basket. If your name is drawn, you get to keep all the fat quarters. This month’s theme is Pretty Pastels. Door Prize: Wear your nametag and be eligible for the door prize drawing. All you do is put your name in the basket when you enter the meeting and wait for your name to be chosen! Book Raffle April 2007: This months raffle book, Clever Quarters, Too by Susan Teegarden Dissmore features scrappy quilts using those wonderful fat quarters that quilters find so hard to resist. The 16 project patterns are diverse in design. The quilts require as little as 5 to as many as 62 fat quarters to complete and range from bed to wall size with a table runner too. The author includes plenty of tips for combining colors, values and patterns to obtain pleasing results. Anyone with a collection of fat quarters is sure to find this a helpful addition to their library. Raffle tickets are only 50 cents each and are for sale at the back table, near the door prize/ fat quarter sign-up. Proceeds from this book sale go to purchase new books for the library. April 2007 Page 2 of 12 What’s New at the Library? Is creating a landscape quilt on your project list? Then be sure to check out this month’s new addition to our library: Beautifully Embellished Landscapes, 125 Tips & Techniques to Create Stunning Quilts by Joyce R. Becker. Becker’s book is full of ideas to launch your creative designs. She shares how to build your landscape, add special effects, and create realistic elements. If you have been wondering how to create a quilt from a favorite photograph this is your resource. Techniques for using paints, markers, threadwork, overlays and more are included. There are even seven tree patterns. Photos clearly illustrate Becker’s techniques and her explanations are straightforward. At this writing, we are very close to having a space to store our Library cart at the McConnell Center. Since we don’t have a dedicated space for the cart yet, the cart may not be at April’s meeting. If you have borrowed library books, please return them this month so others can have a chance to take them out. Our new releases are all out on loan. These may be the only books available for this month. As always, we welcome suggestions. If you have a request for a book to borrow, contact me and I will try and bring it to the meeting. [email protected] Don’t forget that overdue library books are charged a $1 per month fine. Quilters Unlimited Newsletter The newsletter for Northern Virginia=s Quilters Volume 30, Number 3 January 2003 President=s Message Happy New Year! As usual, the holiday season went by so fast. This is our Winter newsletter, which means the QU year is really speeding by. There have been some fun and informative functions this year, and we only have a few more events, then the year will be over. But they should be great events, so don=t miss them! As I write this, we still have the Winter Quilt-to look forward to. A big >thank you= goes to McLean and Vienna Chapters for their organization of this event, which I=m sure, will be a lot of fun. Mark you calendar for January 19th, 2003, at the Falls Church High School. The QU Board of Directors (The elected Board and Chapter Presidents) met for an extended session and discussed the matter of amendments to our current by-laws. Suggestions have been proposed for improvements to deal with problems that have developed over the years. Amendments that were approved will be sent to each member in the next newsletter. My thanks to the committee and all board members who helped craft the amendments. Our next big event is the annual Quilt Show. I hope your quilts are all ready to hang, and that each of you will volunteer some time to help with the show. This year promises to be the best we=ve ever had. I know you=ll all support the show by bringing your family and friends to see our wonderful quilts, and be sure to buy and sell raffle tickets for the A30=s Fabrics for the 30=s@ quilt, a beautiful Pinwheel pattern.
