If it is loud and constant laughter you are seeking over the festive season, make sure you make it to see performances of Joker is Queen, a highlight of the Playhouse Company’s year-end package of entertainment. This hilarious show, turning the spotlight on the extensive talents of popular comics and stars of stage, film and television, Leeanda Reddy and Kaseran Pillay, is to be staged in the Playhouse Drama theatre on Friday, 13th and 14th December at 7.30pm. Joker is Queen is part of the arts body’s jam-packed Christ- mas season programme which includes a sumptuous ballet, a new musical-comedy penned by Clinton Marius, a jazz concert, a wildlife-themed Gcina Mhlophe production for the young, and a lavish Christmas-themed concert with the KZN Philharmonic and guest artists. An extravaganza of 10 unrelated comic sketches, featuring 24 di- verse and colourful characters, all played by Reddy and Pillay, Joker is Queen opens with a throwback to the arrival of the first In- dians in – in a paddle boat, because they missed the main ship! – and then takes many different, unpredictable comic turns. A slick and energetic production, it is a collection of highlights from previous sketch-based stage successes from the team – shows in- cluding Buckled, Queens of Comedy, Old School, Glued and 150 Years and Still Laughing. It is comedy at its best, with the characters all depicted with light- ning-fast changes of costumes, wigs and accents – including a con- cerned nurse, a frustrated teacher, an old-school principal, a sycophantic news reporter and assorted know-it-alls, oddballs and misfits. As a symbolic tribute to the 152000 forebears who were shipped by the British to the plantations of colonial Natal between 1860 and 1911, the 1860 Heritage Cen- tre hosted senior citizens at the approximate area where the first indentured ar- rived. The tradition, now taken over the centre, was started by the late father of Krish Gokool in the early 60s. Senior citizens are taken to the beach where a prayer is said. After this, the senior citizens are given lunch and they share mem- ories of their parents' stories. The 1860 Heritage Centre hosted the senior citi- zens for lunch after the prayer. Professor Joy Brain, a senior historian and one of the leading researchers in the history of Indian indenture in South Africa, was also present at this lunch, together with Prof Jayram Reddy.
