Owned and operated by husband and wife team Thomas Kim and Kat Melgaard, this mom-and-pop restaurant serves up globally influenced street food. Menu items include the Rice Rice Baby and the Muscles from Brussels. Holding a perfect five-star rating out of 84 reviews on Yelp, and already on the radar of the likes of Eater LA and Hoodline, The Left Handed Cook is fast becoming one of the most interesting and dynamic additions to the local restaurant scene. WELCOME Welcome to "Thanks for the Memories!" The Alex Theatre is an extraordinary and special place in Glendale, and three of the City's special organizations with connections to the Alex have come together tonight to bring you an exceptional program. We're so happy that you've joined us this evening to share fond memories of this place, and to remember a time when Brand Boulevard was lined with movie theaters. Film, architecture and history converge to this day, as the Alex continues to be the site of dozens of productions. Memories continue to be made every month. Glendale has many connections to I-lollywood and the film industry - from Nell Shipman, the local multi-hyphenate who 100 years ago wrote, directed, produced and starred in productions on the silent screen, to Clarence Nash, the Glendale resident who provided the voice for Donald Duck. Tonight, you'll see other stars, films and images that recall a Golden Age when Glendale's movie screens flickered with the newest releases from its neighbor, I-lollywood. A special thanks to Adam Felber, our always sharp and talented host, for taking us on a nostalgic and entertaining journey this evening. We very much hope you enjoy the show, and to our grand Alex and all the other theaters that once stood on Brand Boulevard, thanks for the memories ...

It’s a topic that resonates locally because a statue in Glendale’s Central Park honors the victims, known as comfort women. The statue depicts a young woman in traditional Korean dress sitting next to an empty chair. Last month, Glendale police said someone smeared an unknown brown, sticky substance on the the statue. Several flower pots around the memorial were shattered. Tahnee Lightfoot, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman, said it wasn’t the first time the statue had been targeted by vandals, although a specific number of incidents was unavailable. Dimo Hyun Jun Kim, a native of Seoul, South Korea who lives in New York City, is the director and playwright of the L.A. show called “Comfort Women: A New Musical.” His New York City-based production company, Dimo Kim Musical Theatre Factory, produced the show and is dedicated to featuring Asian actors and actresses onstage. While making a musical about such a controversial and emotional issue may seem unusual, Kim points out that he only makes musicals. “If I were a book writer, I may write a book about this.

  • Budget About the Cover
CITY OF GLENDALE, CA 2010 – 2011 Adopted Budget About the Cover Brand Library and Art Center The Brand Library and Art Center nestles against the Verdugo Mountains at the intersection of Mountain and Grandview Avenues. Originally named El Miradero, it was completed in 1904 by Leslie Brand, one of the “founding fathers” of the City. Termed “Brand’s Castle” by locals, it was designed by his brother in law, Nathaniel Dryden. The structure’s Moorish theme was suggested by Brand himself, after a visit to the East Indian Pavilion during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. During his lifetime, Brand hosted many celebrities and dignitaries at his home, culminating in a famous “fly in” luncheon during which guests arrived by plane on his private airstrip. At his death in 1925, the mansion was deeded to the City of Glendale. Today it houses a library, art gallery and performing arts studio. Downtown Glendale Drawing locals and visitors alike, Downtown Glendale is a popular Southern California destination. Anchored by the world famous Alex Theatre, Glendale Galleria and Americana at Brand, Downtown Glendale is known for its fabulous dining, terrific shopping and friendly atmosphere. Nestled between the 134 and 5 freeways at the east end of the San Fernando Valley, Glendale is the third largest City in Los Angeles County with a population of 207,000, but still maintains its small town charm and hospitality. Glendale Transportation Center The City dedicated its “new” Transportation Center in 1924 at the site of the former Tropico Southern Pacific Depot. Located at 400 Cerritos Avenue, this Spanish Mission style structure with its dramatic arched entrance was designed by noted architects MacDonald and Couchot.
