A former Townsville Bulletin sports editor who played a key role in the establishment of the North Queensland Cowboys has called for major changes at board level to get the struggling club back on track. Doug Kingston, who floated the idea that North Queensland should have a Winfield Cup (now NRL) team in a story in the Townsville Bulletin back in 1989, called and chaired the first meeting, and worked on a voluntary basis to help get the team into the national competition, believes the current Cowboys board appears to have lost sight of the core reason the club was established. "Unless major changes are made in the composition of the Cowboys board the club faces a bleak future," Kingston said. "The secrecy surrounding the board of directors gives rise to suspicion that it is a closed shop, which has lost sight of the core reason the club was established. "During the past few weeks I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find out just who is on the NQ Cowboys board. My quest to identify the current board members included numerous Google searches and an email to NQ Cowboys chairman, Lewis Ramsay, requesting details of board members and the procedure for appointment of board members. I also asked Mr Ramsay if any of the current board members were elected by a vote of club members. "Mr Ramsay replied that these matters were ‘confidential’. Kingston then wrote back to Mr Ramsay saying: "In the absence of your advice to the contrary, I will assume that the Cowboys Leagues Club currently owns the North Queensland Cowboys football club/team, having acquired it in 2015 from News Limited.

CASE STUDY Australian National Rugby League turns to Blackbird to drive brand reach, engagement and monetization Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) is the most viewed and attended rugby league club competition in the world. 16 professional men’s rugby teams, including the enormously popular Sydney Roosters, Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos, compete annually for the prestigious Telstra Premiership title. After extensive research into available systems, the NRL chose Blackbird. Every weekend, live streams of the 8 games are run through the Microsoft Azure cloud from the NRL’s content partners’ production locations. Based in Sydney, the NRL’s digital team use Blackbird to rapidly clip, edit and publish highlights during and post-match to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Rugby League as a Televised Product in the United States of America By Mike Morris Abstract Rugby league is a form of rugby that is more similar to American football than its more globally popular cousin rugby union. This similarity to the United States of America’s most popular sport, that country’s appetite for sport, and its previous acceptance of foreign sports products makes rugby league an attractive product for American media outlets to present and promote. Rugby league’s history as a working-class sport in England and Australia will appeal to American consumers hungry for grit and authenticity from their favorite athletes and teams.

Submission 003 BRONCOS BRISBANE THE ROLE OF SPORT IN THE WELL.-BEING AND MENTORING OF INDIGENOUSYOUNG PEOPLE 1 Submission 003 1. The Broncos – Committed to Excellence & Understanding The Brisbane Broncos strongly believe that sport and sporting organisations have a significant and very positive impact on the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander young people. Rugby league has emerged as a key factor in some very positive statistics and research reports into Indigenous well being. Besides the obvious key health benefits gained through the promotion of sport and physical activity in general, it has been noted that there seems to be a sense of collective identity and pride exercised in the ways in which young people engage in rugby league competitions. (Nelson, 2009) It was also noted in Nelson’s 2009 study of Sport, physical activity and urban Indigenous young people that there is an obvious and very significant investment in the cultural artefacts of rugby league, such as football jerseys of their favourite National Rugby League (NRL) Team. It is this ideal that really exemplifies the fact that Rugby League, for many families - particularly indigenous families - is more than just a sport they play, with televised rugby league games described as a site of family togetherness. As one participant of the study explained, ‘we watch it [the Broncos match] every week. We have a little Sunday dinner for it.’ It is these values and beliefs that Indigenous communities hold about Rugby League that make it imperative that clubs such as the Brisbane Broncos run programs such as Learn Earn Legend! in order to improve the wellbeing of Indigenous youth.

Matt Lodge’s victims staggered by footballer’s lack of remorse foxsports.com.au/algo.html March 1, 2018 7:53pm by Peter Mitchell Source: AAP March 1, 2018 THE New York family terrorised by Brisbane Broncos forward Matthew Lodge say it is heartbreaking he is continuing with his life and will be held as a role model for young Australian rugby league fans while failing to show any remorse or pay the $1.6 million in damages ordered by a US civil court. They were also upset by remarks made by NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg this week alleging discussions were taking place to conclude the matter. The family and their New York lawyer say that is not true. “He (Lodge) has never contacted us at all,” Joseph Cartright, who was put in a head lock and punched in the face by the powerfully built, 1.93m tall Lodge, told AAP. “He has never apologised. “There has never been a sense of sorrow for his actions. “It is bewildering to us.” Mr Cartright, his wife Ruth Fowler and nine-year-old son were asleep in their Upper West Side Manhattan apartment at about 4am on October 16, 2015, when their doorbell rang. Joseph Cartright and his wife Ruth Fowler.Source: News Corp Australia A German tourist, Carolin Dekeyser, randomly rang the intercom while being physically harassed and threatened on the street by Lodge who told her: “Do you think you’re going to die? This is the night you’re going to die.” Mr Cartright got out of bed to let Ms Dekeyser into the lobby, but Lodge followed her inside, physically assaulted Mr Cartright and went into his apartment, locked Mr Cartright out and began destroying furniture and smashing plates.
