Blossoms of Persian poetry, although inspired by the pure nature, gradually took the attractive qualities of mysticism. In traditions, the Holy Quran is called the burgeoning of hearts and the greatest prophet (peace be upon him) is referred to as the burgeoning of souls. Spring in Persian literature is sometimes the symbol of improvement and deliverance and at other times is considered as the symbol of the afterlife. Actually, this is the highest symbol of spring in Persian literature. Desert land of Yazd bears fragrant flowers, in spite of its natural wrath, tickles the taste of souls of the pious people. -

What does the Persian Whitman look like? What does his Persianness or his foreignness tell us about Whitman, Iran, and the interaction between the two? This essay answers these questions to elaborate on the dialogue created between American poetry and contemporary Iran through translating Whitman. Studies of the reception of a writer in another culture primarily deal with the translation of the works into the target language. Such studies usually ignore the translation of the writer’s image. The present essay focuses on the translation of an American writer’s image into a contemporary Iranian context. In this study, “image” refers both to visual representations, such as pictures or photographs, and the mental conceptions held in common by members of a group, such as is the subject of imagology. Walt Whitman (1819-1892), commonly referred to as the father of American free verse and the American poet of democracy, has frequently been studied in terms of his reputation, reception, and influence in other countries. STATE, DISSIDENTS, AND CONTENTION: IRAN, 1979-2010 HAMID REZAI SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 ©2012 Hamid Rezai All rights reserved ABSTRACT State, Dissidents, and Contention: Iran, 1979-2010 Hamid Rezai Why after almost a decade of silence and “successful” crackdowns of contention during the 1980s has Iran witnessed once again waves of increasing popular protest? What are the processes and mechanisms behind the routinization of collective actions in Iran since the early 1990s, which continue despite state repression? Why and under what circumstances does a strong authoritarian state that has previously marginalized its contenders tolerate some forms of contention despite the state’s continued repressive capacity? And finally, to what extent are available social movement theories capable of explaining the Iranian case? In “State, Dissidents, and Contention: Iran, 1979-2010” I engage theories of social movements and contentious politics in order to examine the emergence, development, and likely outcomes of popular contention in contemporary Iran. My study is the first project of its kind to focus on elite factionalism and its impact on popular mobilization in contemporary Iran. Although other scholars have extensively written on elite factionalism in postrevolutionary Iran, they have not analyzed the implications of the inter-elite conflict for the emergence and development of social protests against the Islamic Republic. While this study primarily utilizes political process and resource mobilization models, it acknowledges the importance of economic, ideological, and breakdown approaches for the interpretation of the emergence and development of popular mobilization in contemporary Iran. -

The Manichaean Living Self Reflected in Persian Mystical Poetry Omid Behbahani Introduction The Living Self, as part of the divine entity imprisoned in Matter, is a defined concept in the Manichaean mythological terminology. The essence of this concept, adopted and adapted in Iranian Mysticism and reflected in the words of Persian poets, is the focus of this article. After introducing the concept of Living Self, I will bring some examples of Rumi, Hafez, and a few modern Persian poets to demonstrate the conti- nuity of ancient believes in classical and modern Persian poetry. Manichaeism, founded in the third century CE by Mani, borne in Bab- ylonia (a province of Persia at the time), once flourished in the ancient world and claimed followers from North Africa to China for over a mil- lennium.
