Maher When I joined the Smithtown Democratic Committee in 2003 I did so because of my belief in the values of the Democratic Party but also because I wanted to be counted as part of the opposition to the Republican Party. Advanc- ing the Democratic platform is always at the core of our activities but in these times it is also as critical to the lives of Americans that the Republican agenda be stopped. In 2014 this has never been truer. From holding the line on issues ranging from the environment, healthcare, Social Security, voter protection, wages and labor, equality in the work place, student loan debt and the simple idea that there is a social contract. The success of our party depends on the efforts of our elected officials and those who have helped get them elected. We thrive when we are represented by folks who are willing to jump into the fray and go toe to toe with the opposition, even with long odds. So in this spirit I am proud that the Smithtown Democrats have selected Congressman Tim Bishop and the Executive Vice-Chair of our committee, Richard Macellaro as our 2014 Persons of the Year. Since his first election in 2002 Congressman Tim Bishop has been a tireless advocate for the people of New York’s 1st Congressional District. Tim Bishop has voted his conscience on a wide range of issues during his time in Wash- ington DC despite the fact that these votes have put him in the sights of the RNC and their powerful political action committee allies. It is a credit to his tenacity and commitment to his values that Tim Bishop has successfully defended his seat from these coordinated Republican attacks. And with our help he will prevail again this year. In 2014, among other issues, Tim Bishop is standing up for an increase in the minimum wage and standing against the ridiculous no- tion that we should be raising the interest rates on student loans or that we should be punishing the student in the event of the death of a cosigner to their student loan. Two of my own children will be graduating from college this year and while I am very proud of them and excited for their future, they, like most of their peers, will be starting their adult life with the overhang of their student loans and entering a workplace of stagnant wages. There are people at the end of the policy that comes out of Washington DC and Tim Bishop has always been on their side. For this reason Congressman Tim Bishop is a 2014 Smithtown Democratic Committee Person of the Year! Richard Macellaro came to the Smithtown Democratic Committee after his long experience in politics during his life in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In Brooklyn Richard worked as a Special Assistant for two NYS Assembly members, bringing that political experience with him when he joined the Smithtown Democrats in 2008. Richard became the committee’s Executive Vice-Chair in 2014. Since joining the group Richard has been invaluable to the committee’s ac- tivities and to our candidate’s campaigns. Smithtown is a tough place for Democrats but Richard is never deterred from advancing our cause. Richard’s community involvement does not end with the Smithtown Democrats. He is very involved with the Fr. John Papallo Lodge, Order of Sons of Italy in America located in Kings Park where he served a term as President. Additionally, Richard is an Officer of the Lakebridge Condo II Board of Managers, in Kings Park. The good people of Smithtown know Richard as someone who cares about the town and that he can be seen at most every civic event in Kings Park and Smithtown at large. In 2010 Richard ran for the NYS Assembly against the entrenched Republican incumbent. Despite the electoral disad- vantage Richard ran a hard race and distinguished himself and the Smithtown committee. Undaunted by the Assembly race Richard again picked up the mantle for the local Democrats and ran for the Smithtown Town Council in 2013. Regardless of the outcome, running for office is an important form of civic duty and we owe a debt of gratitude and respect to the people who take on the endeavor. I’m proud to know Richard Macellaro and I am especially proud that he is a 2014 Smithtown Democratic Committee Person of the Year! I am glad to have this opportunity along with the Smithtown Democratic Committee to honor both Tim and Richard. Congratulations to you both for this well deserved honor. 2014 PERSONS OF THE YEAR DINNER 2014SDJOURNAL_Smithtown Democrat Dinner Journal 5/27/14 8:10 AM Page 4 SMITHTOWN DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE Congressman Tim Bishop Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Congressman Tim Bishop led Southampton College for 29 years, leaving the position of Provost in 2002 to make his first-ever run for office, when he was elected to represent New York's 1st Con- gressional District in one of the closest elections in the nation. He has been re-elected to the House of Representatives five times. Congressman Bishop’s priorities in Congress include fighting for middle class families, improving access to higher educa- tion, defending retirement security for America's seniors, protecting the environment and providing excellent constituent services. He is a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee and the House Transportation and Infra- structure Committee, serving as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. As a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Bishop has worked to protect the Long Island Sound and other waterways, as well as to bring back federal funding to improve our infrastructure and put Long Is- landers to work. He has been a champion of the Long Island Sound, defeating a plan to dump contaminated dredge spoil as well as leading the opposition against a plan to industrialize the Sound. Congressman Bishop has brought home more than $130 million to our district including $50 million for roads and bridges in the district. He led the bipartisan coalition of elected officials and community advocates that saved the 106th Air Res- cue Wing located at Gabreski Airport from being shut down by the Pentagon’s base closure commission. Bishop is recognized as one of the strongest advocates in Congress for college access and affordability, and he helped write key provisions of legislation to help millions of students and families pay for college at no new cost to taxpayers. In recognition of his work on behalf of students, Bishop was named the 2011 recipient of the National Association of Inde- pendent Colleges and Universiti es’ Award for Advocacy of Independent Higher Education, and was also the first recipient of the Torch Award from the Coalition of Higher Education Assistance Organizations honoring public figures who demonstrate leadership and effectiveness in expanding availability of student financial assistance. Bishop has helped thousands of Long Islanders cut through the federal bureaucracy and access the Soc ial Security, Medicare, and other benefits they deserve. Standing up for Suffolk County's veterans is also a top priority for Bishop and he has recovered over $2 million in overdue compensation for local veterans and secured nearly 3,500 military medals that his constituents earned but never received. Bishop was named the Times-Beacon newspapers’ “Man of the Year in Gov- ernment,” citing his excellence in constituent service. Congressman Bishop is among the 12th generation of Bishops to live on Long Island. He graduated from Southampton High School and holds an BA in History from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Long Island University. He and his wife Kathryn, founder and director of The Children’s School for early childhood developm ent, have two daughters, Molly and Meghan, and the family welcomed their first grandchild, Nathan, in 2010. 2014 PERSONS OF THE YEAR DINNER 2014SDJOURNAL_Smithtown Democrat Dinner Journal 5/27/14 8:10 AM Page 5 SMITHTOWN DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE Richard Macellaro SMITHTOWN DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE EXECUTIVE VICE-CHAIR Richard S. Macellaro was born on May 24, 1952 and raised in the Williamsburg section (Devoe and Olive Streets) of Brooklyn, New York. Richard graduated from Bishop Loughlin MHS, in Fort Green, Brooklyn. Richard earned a Bache- lors (BA) Degree in Political Science/Communications from Queens College. In the early 1970’s, Richard was the first President of the St. Nicholas RC Church Parish Council, an advisory council. Richard organized CYO and Adult Education programs for neighborhood residents. As a result of a serious and fatal fire, displacing many community families, Richard coordinated assistance efforts with local civic groups and Pratt University to help stabilize the area, build new housing and increase life-sustaining government services. As a community activist, he was a founding mem ber of a community based, not-for profit corporation, known today as the St.

  • December 11, 2006 New Congress Brings with It Religious Firsts By
December 11, 2006 New Congress Brings With It Religious Firsts by Jonathan Tilove Religion News Service The new Congress will, for the first time, include a Muslim, two Buddhists, more Jews than Episcopalians, and the highest-ranking Mormon in congressional history. Roman Catholics remain the largest single faith group in Congress, accounting for 29 percent of all members of the House and Senate, followed by Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Jews and Episcopalians. While Catholics in Congress are nearly 2-to-1 Democrats, the most lopsidedly Democratic groups are Jews and those not affiliated with any religion. Of the 43 Jewish members of Congress, there is only one Jewish Republican in the House and two in the Senate. The six religiously unaffiliated members of the House are all Democrats. The most Republican groups are the small band of Christian Scientists in the House (all five are Republican), and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (12 Republicans and three Democrats) -- though the top-ranking Mormon in the history of Congress will be Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, the incoming Democratic majority leader. Baptists divide along partisan lines defined by race. Black Baptists, like all black members of Congress, are Democrats, while most white Baptists are Republicans. Notable exceptions include incoming House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., who will serve as president pro tem in the new Senate, making him third in succession to the presidency after the vice president and House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Because 2006 was such a good year for Democrats, they have regained their commanding advantage among Catholics, which had slipped during an era of GOP dominance.

  • Defining Position for Efforts to Reduce Influence of Money in Politics New
Date: May 2, 2014 To: Friends of Democracy Corps, Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, and Public Campaign Action Fund From: Stan Greenberg and James Carville, Democracy Corps Erica Seifert, Greenberg Quinlan Rosner David Donnelly, Public Campaign Action Fund Defining position for efforts to reduce influence of money in politics New battleground survey shows strong and sustainable support for proposals to re- duce influence of money in politics The most recent battleground survey conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner for Democracy Corps and Public Campaign Action Fund fielded just one week after the Supreme Court handed down its decision in McCutcheon v. FEC. This survey of the 50 most competitive Republican districts and 36 most competitive Democratic districts finds that voters from both parties and all demographic groups are angered by the influence of big money and remain strongly supportive of efforts to reduce the influence of money in politics.1 Across the battleground, voters are deeply discouraged with the direction of the country. Just a quarter (25 percent) say the country is headed in the right direction; two thirds (67 percent) say we are off on the wrong track. Voters in both Democratic and Republican districts give their in- cumbents low job approval ratings and they give even lower ratings for the parties in Congress. This context shapes voters’ serious support for efforts to reform the influence of money in poli- tics—even when they are exposed to negative information about reform proposals. Incumbents from both parties would do well to champion bold reforms like those laid out in this survey as part of a campaign against the status quo in Washington.
