Buddy Holly Is Alive and Well Quick Pitch BUDDY HOLLY IS ALIVE AND WELL QUICK PITCH On February 2nd, 1989, televisions all over the world suddenly black out, interupted by a signal from outer space, replacing the "regularly scheduled programming" with rock icon, Buddy Holly, who delivers a cryptic message to an average electronics salesman, Oliver Vale, tasking him with saving the world from an alien plot to destroy Earth. BUDDY HOLLY IS ALIVE AND WELL | P2 OVERVIEW BUDDY HOLLY IS ALIVE AND WELL is the story of Oliver Vale, a common young man suddenly called to unexpected adventures, when TV screens go blank across the world and the 1950s rock pioneer Buddy Holly is alive again, performing from Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter. In the Film’s arresting central image, Holly, who died in a plane crash at the height of his fame, returns with all of his legendary stage charisma. He wears his trademark black-framed glasses and plays his Fender Strat electric guitar. Suddenly, the rocker stops and delivers a strange, unexpected message in his sultry Texas accent, that Vale holds the key to the blackout and that he should be “contacted for assistance.” This odd manifesto abruptly changes the life of Vale, an electronic salesman living in Las Vegas, who suddenly finds himself the target of a high- speed, cross-country chase. In a defining moment, Vale turns from channel surfer to perpetrator number one as he finds himself pursued by space aliens, a fierce cyborg dog, and a ruthless government agent. This does not include the millions of fellow couch potatoes in the world incensed and frantic to get their TV back. In his quest for answers, Vale decides to travel to Lubbock, Texas, Holly’s birthplace and final resting place, hoping that there he will find the solution to the mysterious TV blackout and the appearance of Buddy Holly. I was standing in line for what I thought was an elevator to the top when I noticed this guy standing in front of me. He was the same guy I’d seen on the bus from Indianapolis, asleep next to his guitar, taking up the whole seat. It didn’t matter since other seats were empty. You’d expect the bus to be full at Christmas, but it wasn’t a good year. “So are you going up?” I asked him. “I suppose I am,” he said. “You know, I saw you on the bus back there. I’m Calvin Dee, from Caldwell. Caldwell, Indiana.” He seemed a little reluctant to shake my hand.

Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956-1966 September 29, 2006, through January 6, 2007 Exhibition Labels Exhibit Introductory Panel I Think I’ll Call It America Born into changing times, Bob Dylan shaped history in song. “Life’s a voyage that’s homeward bound.” So wrote Herman Melville, author of the great tall tale Moby Dick and one of the American mythmakers whose legacy Bob Dylan furthers. Like other great artists this democracy has produced, Dylan has come to represent the very historical moment that formed him. Though he calls himself a humble song and dance man, Dylan has done more to define American creative expression than anyone else in the past half-century, forming a new poetics from his emblematic journey. A small town boy with a wandering soul, Dylan was born into a post-war landscape of possibility and dread, a culture ripe for a new mythology. Learning his craft, he traveled a road that connected the civil rights movement to the 1960s counterculture and the revival of American folk music to the creation of the iconic rock star. His songs reflected these developments and, resonating, also affected change. Bob Dylan, 1962 Photo courtesy of John Cohen Section 1: Hibbing Red Iron Town Bobby Zimmerman was a typical 1950’s kid, growing up on Elvis and television. Northern Minnesota seems an unlikely place to produce an icon of popular music—it’s leagues away from music birthplaces like Memphis and New Orleans, and seems as cold and characterless as the South seems mysterious. Yet growing up in the small town of Hibbing, Bob Dylan discovered his musical heritage through radio stations transmitting blues and country from all over, and formed his own bands to practice the newfound religion of rock ‘n’ roll.
