This event is a time to focus on the positive actions and outcomes of many and rise above the negative commentary and challenging obstacles constructed by the few. The past twelve months saw the greatest increase in LGBTQ inclusion work by sporting organisations to date, with some amazing results worth highlighting: • Pride in Sport Index (PSI) submissions increased by 111% • Benchmarking categories increased by 55% • Individual PSI survey responses increased by 188% • Individual award submissions increased by 165% • Pride in Sport membership reach exceeds 6.9million Australians • Pride in Sport social reach now exceeds 50,000 people per month • For the first time ever, we now see community clubs participating in the PSI. These figures alone highlight the growing focus to make Australian sport more inclusive for people of diverse genders and sexualities.

THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 2015 SPORTS Preview Nigeria seek to step up after years as also-rans WELLINGTON: Nigeria have been Africa’s com- manding team in women’s soccer, ever present at every Women’s World Cup, and are finally hoping to step up and join the list of the tournament’s top contenders. The Super Falcons kept up an obligatory African presence at the last six World Cups but made little headway, demonstrating the gulf between their game and the more developed standard of women’s football in Europe and North America. But in recent years the gap has narrowed and after Nigeria finished runner-up in last year’s Under-20 Women’s World Cup, there are now hopes Nigeria could be a realistic challenger. “Our desire is to be counted at the World Cup and we won’t leave any stone unturned to ensure we achieve the target,” coach Edwin Okon said in a recent Nigeria press interview ahead of the June 6-July 5 Women’s World Cup in Canada. The target is at least a place in the last eight, emulat- ing Nigeria’s best ever achievement at a Women’s World Cup when they got to the quarter-finals in 1999. Key to Nigeria’s hopes will be a positive result in their opening game in Group D against Sweden in Winnipeg on Monday. They also play Australia and the United States in a tough draw. Okon has put heavy emphasis on fitness ahead of the tournament and there has been a lengthy preparatory camp.

ADVERTISEMENT By Bill Collins, University of Newcastle + COMMENT 1 New South Wales is the only major state in Australia that does not have energy security. Its reliance on Victorian and Queensland gas, paired with the vital role gas plays in its homes and industries, have put it in a precarious position. To put it bluntly, the state is heading for a major energy crisis in the next three or four years, and that will severely affect its future living standards and economic growth. The recently released independent report on coal seam gas (CSG) – written by NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer, Professor Mary O’Kane – recommends the government commit to a strong regulatory and monitoring system within the CSG industry, and highlights the need for world-class engineering practice. Though the report recommends this commitment and champions further research on environmental impacts, we need to move quickly.

The students are here this week representing their School Sports Associations, Schools and families. It is an honour to gain representative status as an athlete and we look forward to the emerging performances of those who may emulate the careers of many of the current and former Matildas, Young Matildas and W-League players who have participated previously at these championships. From this championship the NSW Combined High Schools State teams to compete in the NSW All Schools Tournament during June will be announced for fixtures against Combined Catholic Colleges and Combined Independent Schools. This event also serves as the trials for this year’s National Championships which will be held in Victoria during August. We look forward to some wonderful football with the challenge for all teams to step up to the quality football we saw from last year’s champions, Sydney West who narrowly accounted for Sydney North in the final.
