Two texts by Blair, a sermon (A Perswasive to Repentance, 1743) and a revival account (A Short and Faithful Narrative, 1744) are studied rhetorically and presented as representative of the “rhetoric of the revival,” a particular mode of preaching in which the speaker employs a wide array of rhetor- ical patterns, biblical innuendos and communicative strategies aimed at eliciting emotional responses. Keywords: Samuel Blair, Great Awakening, colonial preaching The Great Awakening constituted a critical event in the history of colonial America, arguably the most formative one alongside the French and Indian War. Crowds of thousands of people, the emotional reactions of the audiences which often bordered on mass hysteria, the fervent theological debates and a surplus of publications played a significant role in the shaping of the pre-Revolutionary ecclesiastical order. Similarly, the American rhetorical tradition was strongly informed by revival developments in pulpit oratory. New forms of preaching manifested the power of the spoken word to the colonists, and propelled the dynamics of public debate in a period which was to prove vital for the development of American identity. Alongside such figures as Jonathan Edwards, or George Whitefield, who were at the forefront of the Great Awakening and whose involvement in 1eighteenth-century revivalism has been extensively studied,1 1 Since the publication of Perry Miller’s (Jonathan Edwards) and Ola Winslow’s (Jonathan Edwards) pioneering books on Edwards, a number of important studies have dedicated their attention to the significance of the Northampton divine for the Great Awakening. Not many books were reprinted more frequently during the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century than the Hymns and Spiritual Songs of Isaac Watts. Few books became more familiar, and certainly but few played a greater part in the history of our American Presbyterianism, both in its worship and in its strifes. But with all this familiarity and multiplica tion of editions, the early history, textual and bibliographical, of the hymns has remained practically unknown. This is ac counted for by the fact that by the time interest in such studies began to be awakened, the early editions of the book itself had disappeared from sight. As long ago as 1854, Peter Cunningham, when editing the Life of Watts in Johnson's Lives of the Poets, stated that "a first edition of his Hymns, 1707, is rarer than a first edition of the Pilgrim's Progress, of which it is said only one copy is known." The second edition is not less rare. The Rev. James Mearns, assistant editor of Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology, stated (The Guardian, London, January 29, 1902) that he had never seen or heard of a copy.     MODELS OF TIME TRAVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING FILMS Guy Roland Micklethwait A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University July 2012 National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences APPENDIX I: FILMS REVIEWED Each of the following film reviews has been reduced to two pages. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

If I knew what subject has the most direct tendency to save your souls, that is the subject to which my heart would cling with peculiar endearment .... Samuel Davies.1 I. The "Great Awakening" 1. The Narrative It is customary to refer to that time period which spanned and surrounded the years 1740-1742 as the Great Awakening in North American history. The literature dedicated to the treatment of this era has developed the tradition of tracing the revival from the Middle Colonies centripetally out to the Northern Colonies and the Southern Colonies. The name of Theodorus Frelinghuysen usually inaugurates the narrative, as preliminary to the Log College, its Founder, William Tennent, and its chief Alumni, Gilbert Tennent, and his brothers John, and William Jr., Samuel and John Blair, Samuel Finley and others, so significantly portrayed in Archibald Alexander’s gripping Sketches.2 The "mind" of the revival, Jonathan Edwards, pastored at first in the Northampton region of New England, but was later drawn into the orbit of the Log College, filling the post of President for lamentably only three months. Besides the Log College, another centralizing force of this revival was the “Star from the East,” George Whitefield. His rhetorical abilities have been recognized as superior, his insight into Scripture as incisive, and his generosity of spirit boundless. The narrative of the “Great Awakening” reaches back to those passionate and fearless Puritans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, who championed biblical and experiential religion as the singular remedy for a nation and a people clinging to forms and superstitions.

Pressured by his best friend, Peter (Bradley Cooper), to get his act together or be stuck with a lonely life, Carl attends a New Age self-help seminar intended to change "no men" like Carl into "yes men" willing to meet life's challenges with gusto. Carl is reluctant at first, but finds the seminar to be ultimately life-changing when he's coerced into giving the "say yes" attitude a try. As the first opportunity to say yes presents itself, Carl hesitantly utters the three-letter word, setting the stage for a domino effect of good rewards, and giving Carrey a platform to show off his comic chops. But over time Carl realizes that saying yes to everything indiscriminately can reap results as complicated and messy as his life had become when saying "no" was his norm. The always-quirky Zooey Deschanel adds her signature charm as Carl's love interest, Allison. An unlikely match at first glance, the pair actually develop great chemistry as the story progresses, the actors play- ing off each other's different styles of humor. Rhys Darby also shines as Carl's loveable but clueless boss, and That 70s Show's Danny Masterson appears as another one of Carl's friends.

    LUDWIK BIELAWSKI (Warszawa) Music and Art - Levels of Communication While exploring the foundations of musical knowledge, and in particular the roles of the categories of time and space in their formation, I became convinced that the results of my research also shed some light on the problem of communication. I have already spoken on this subject previously, but with the focus on musical issues.1 In the present paper, I shall express the subject in more general terms, prompted to do so by the questions posed by the organisers of the conference ‘Music as a Medium of Communication’,2 in particular those relating to the problem of ‘musi­ cal universals’ and of music’s relationship with other forms of art. It is my belief that musical universals, similarly to cultural univer­ sals, as understood in their broadest extent, are conditioned by the cul­ ture of man and the way in which he exists. In relation to music, I would express the problem in general terms as the anthropology of music. And since the issue concerns other arts, as well, I shall also deal with the an­ thropology of art. From this general perspective, there are no essential differences between these disciplines, as they rest on common founda­ tions. Thus I shall present a general schema of the anthropology of art and the place within it of the individual questions circulated by the con­ ference organisers. I shall also give my brief replies to those questions. A general schema of art anthropology, as a starting point for discussion and at the same time the point of arrival of my reflections, is shown in Table 1.
