At Covenant Day School, this recipe has led to one very impressive cheerleading team. Coach Jackie Weigel has combined the leaders of the school spirit teams with the cheerleaders to come up with a perfect recipe for success. “For the past eleven weeks I’ve had the privilege, as head var- sity coach at Covenant Day School to direct 21 high school students; 13 girls and 8 guys,” said Weigel. “In a time when there are many misguided youth, these young people are role models among their peers and adults alike. All of the them are good students. All of them are good athletes. All of them are good citizens. All of them are… CHEERLEADERS!” A word of caution here… don’t call the guys that. No, these gen- tlemen are known as the Stunt Squad. This is the first year that Covenant Day School has combined the Varsity Cheer Squad with the leaders of the fan based group; the Covenant Crazies. As a result, school spirit has soared at the basket- ball games. The combined group is made up of individuals who are all ‘stars’ in their own right excelling is multiple areas in life. As for the gentlemen in particular, all participate in other sports like foot- ball, baseball, soccer and track. One even holds the 3A state record for public and private schools in the Discus Throw. Others include; a National Merit Finalist and Stu- dent Government president, a Beta Club president, a leader of Hope Design (an inspirational organiza- tion for youth), and mission trip leaders in Haiti and Africa. Yet with all these accolades there are no egos here. When the entire squad ‘circles up’, they ‘break’ on, “3,2,1, family!” According to Coach Weigel, “everyone has trained hard. The guys have endured a massive cram course in ‘Cheerleading 101’ for safety and technique. A few guys might tell you that they’ve also endured a little ribbing from some of their friends and other coaches. All will tell you it’s been hard work…but that it’s been a blast!” Mackenzie Moser, a member of the cheerleading team says, “The guys brought more spirit and fun to the team and better stunts. A lot of the guys and girls were already friends before the season, so being on the team together created a close bond between each other that we call our “cheer family.” The guys and girls not only bonded during games and practices, but we also helped each other through a lot of other things going on in our lives. We have all challenged each other mentally, physically, and spiritually. Being SIGN UP IN PERSON part of this kind of team has been one of the highlights of my Junior year.” Varsity cheerleader, Bekah Rosser added, “The team has work especially hard this year. From not knowing how to stunt or even cheer at the beginning February 12th 10AM – 2 PM of this school year to pulling off an incredible perfor- mance at the pep rally and each game; the amount of @ time and work that each person has put into this team is infinite.” Stunt team member Matt Pearson said, “It all start- PCAA field complex ed as a bit of a joke, but all of the guys were friends and decided to try out the cheerleading thing. I’m glad 210 Lowry Street, Pineville I did it because I got to get a lot closer to people and make new friends. I play baseball for CBC and for my school, and hope to play in college, so after SIGN UP ON-LINE ANYTIME AT cheerleading is over, I plan to have a good senior year in baseball.” As you can tell, this outstanding group of students pcaasports.org is having fun! It’s important for area booster clubs to rally the troops and begin to organize for the future. There are many questions that will need to be answered and booster clubs that want to participate and run programs through their 501(c)(3) organizations must get to work. It will take more than three or four active parents at each school. You can’t sit back and let other folks do the work. We can all learn from our good friends in Union County that make their programs so successful. I have received numerous emails and phone calls from Weddington, Marvin Ridge and Cuthbertson Booster Club Members and Ath- letic Directors offering to provide help and answers. It’s more important than ever for folks to stay focused on the task at hand. If your group of booster club members go off in five different directions, the program will never work. The focus here must be to help the kids as a whole not as many different parts. While I may be the person starting the campaign, it will take all interested parties to find success. I am offering my knowledge, ideas and compassion to help make this a reality. I have meetings lined up with many parent leaders over the next few days. As we begin to move forward, these leaders will report back to their friends and work will begin. While we may not agree with many of the decisions being made by CMS, we have to be strong and support our teachers and principals during these try- ing times. Those are the people that along with us as parents, will mold our children. Different groups in other parts of the county will step up to provide different opportunities for their area schools. I feel the best plan for the South Charlotte based middle schools is the booster club method. Just as the group of philan- thropists announced the incredible $55 million dollar investment in West Char- lotte High School and their feeder schools, we need to now help with our South Charlotte community schools. We already do this on the academic side and I know we can put forth the same effort to save our athletic programs along with dance clubs, choral groups, chess teams and all valuable after-school activities.
