Fear and Loathing in the Hookup Culture: a Study of Female Engagement in Non-Relational Sex on a University Campus FEAR AND LOATHING IN THE HOOKUP CULTURE: A STUDY OF FEMALE ENGAGEMENT IN NON-RELATIONAL SEX ON A UNIVERSITY CAMPUS By Shanlea L. Gordon, 2013 Abstract Recent empirical evidence suggests that we have entered a new period of courtship known as the hookup era. Contemporary research which explores hooking up has confirmed the prevalence of this dating script, particularly within post-secondary institutions. The relevant literature has focused on a variety of important issues including the conceptual meaning of hooking up, and the identification of potential correlates and consequences of these behaviours. Despite this increase in scholarly interest, several problems remain unaddressed. Principal among these is the way(s) in which young women mediate the self-perceived risks involved in the sexual exchange known as the hookup, so as to facilitate their participation in this culture. The current paper examines the controversy that is female hookup participation by investigating the risks – and subsequent negotiation of these risks – which women face in the hookup culture. Specifically, this paper makes use of detailed qualitative data gathered from a sample of female undergraduate students at a medium-sized Canadian university, in order to uncover the social processes by which female proponents of the hookup culture account for their actions to themselves and to others, in this the seemingly risky courtship script. ii Acknowledgements First and foremost I would like to thank my supervisor, teacher, mentor, and friend, Dr. Vincent F. Serena is of course referencing the primary mode of heterosexual romantic interaction on university and college campuses, a practice commonly referred to as hooking up. Empirical evidence, derived mainly from studies undertaken in the United States, suggest that there have been recent transitions in the culture of courtship which have sparked the emergence of a new courtship period known as the hookup era (Bogle 2008a; Epstein et al. 2009; Glenn and Marquardt 2001). These studies confirm the pervasiveness of hooking up on university and college campuses and more importantly, identify hooking up as the primary courtship script to which post-secondary students subscribe (Bogle 2008a; Garcia and Reiber 2008; Paul and Hayes 2002). Although the term hooking up is rather ambiguous, there is a general consensus that a hookup involves some degree of sexual intimacy – whether that be kissing, sexual intercourse, or anything “in-between” – and explicitly lacks any a priori agreements or obligations for subsequent relations or relationships (Bogle 2007, 2008a; Bradshaw et al. 2010; Garcia and Reiber 2008; Owen et al. 2010). In other words, young men and women are partaking in sexual exchanges with one another with no assurance that any future interactions will result. The hooking up era is seemingly characterized by a reversal in the relationship between emotional investment and sexual intimacy, as the latter generally precedes the former in contemporary relationships. 1 All names have been replaced with pseudonyms to maintain the confidentiality of participants in this study. 1 Despite the scholarly interest in hooking up behaviours, several significant problems remain unaddressed. Principal among these is the understanding of female participation in the hookup culture. Several researchers and social commentators suggest that non-relational sexual liaisons have several risky elements, especially for females who subscribe to this culture (Downing-Matibag and Geisinger 2009; Eshbaugh and Gute 2008; Fielder and Carey 2010b; Flack et al. 2007; Kalish and Kimmel 2011; Owen and Fincham 2011; Paul and Hayes 2002; Regnerus and Uecker 2011; Wade and Heldman 2012). Despite the identification of these risks however, the same studies continuously report high levels of female involvement in hooking up (Bogle 2008a; Fielder and Carey 2010b; Owen et al. 2011; Paul and Hayes 2002). The implication is that female participation in the hookup culture is paradoxical; although hooking up poses several risks for young women, high levels of female participation are consistently reported. But heterosexual sex, by definition, does not appear on the long list of activities for which men are not required. No matter how slow, lazy, and inadaptable men may be, if women are going to continue having heterosexual sex, they need men.     UNDERSTANDING HOOKUP CULTURE What’s Really Happening on College Campuses [transcript] PAULA ENGLAND: So I want to talk about what’s happening in sexuality in college among heterosexuals. I want to give a descriptive portrait of what’s happening these days in what I call the “hooking up culture” – and also what’s happening with relationships – and show how patterns are still gendered. So let me tell you what data I’m basing this on. First of all, I’ve been collecting some qualitative data at Stanford University where I teach – interviews of undergrads by undergrads, and I’ve also been doing focus groups in a class I teach on sex and love. And then I’m using quantitative data from an online survey of undergraduates. I now have about eighteen public and private universities that the data are coming from, so I have a pretty big sample. And today I’ll limit things to heterosexuals. So in the online survey, I asked characteristics of people’s most recent hookup and about characteristics of the most recent relationship that they had been in – and said for them to limit that to a relationship that lasted at least six months. Now what do they mean when they say “hookup”? Now what the survey said was “use whatever definition of hookup you and your friends use.” And then I also asked about: Have you been in a relationship of at least six months while you were in college? And then I asked about the last time you and your partner did something beyond just kissing.

    Graduate Student Journal of Psychology Copyright 2010 by the Department of Counseling & Clinical Psychology 2010, Vol. 12 Teachers College, Columbia University Engaging in the Hookup Culture: A Self-Discrepancy Perspective Elizabeth Victor Duke University This study examined the hypothesis that self-concept discrepancies predict engagement in casual sexual behavior, or hookups. One hundred seventy two undergraduate men and women completed questionnaires assessing their level of self-discrepancy and their hookup participation. Contrary to the study hypothesis, findings indicate that participants high in actual-ideal self-discrepancy are less likely to engage in hookups. Gender, age, and actual-ought self-discrepancy did not predict hookup culture participation. Differences between ethnic groups in hookup participation are also discussed. Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: Approximately 60–80% of college students in the USA report a hookup experience in the form of a casual sexual encounter between individuals without the expectation of a dating or romantic relationship. Given the potential health risk posed by these sexual encounters, the need exists to critically examine this cultural phenomenon on college campuses. Yet, the existing hookup literature is overwhelming White and often exclusive of historically marginalised populations such as Black women. Accordingly, this paper examines the role of the intersecting identities of race and gender and other social factors that influence the sexual health and wellbeing of Black women on US college campuses. Specifically, we explore issues related to the gender ratio disparities present on college campuses, relationship power imbalances, inconsistent condom use and low sexual-risk perception.

Comparing Intimacies: Race Relations and Racial Inequality in Hookup Culture Abstract Racial inequality extends beyond socioeconomic measures: it shapes social interactions. With the shift in sexual scripts (i.e., the normative means to obtain sex) for young Americans from steady dating toward hooking up, recent scholarship has identified how hookups er veal gender and class inequality. However, research has not yet sufficiently investigated racial inequality. Because hookups are by their nature non- committal, they have arguably fewer barriers (e.g., disapproval by family) than more committed relationships. While this indicates that hooking up is a personal choice, broader research suggests that race/ethnicity and gender intersect in ways shaping participation in hookup culture and the interactions across racial lines. This three article dissertation explores how race/ethnicity and gender structure the opportunities to hook up and social distance between racial groups. Using data from the Online College Social Life Survey (n = 18,347), this dissertation identifies acial/ethnicr differences within gender in participation in hookup culture. While Asian men and non-White women are less likely to participate, they are more likely to desire opportunities to hook up suggesting that they are excluded from hookup culture rather than opting-out.
