Chapter one provides background material on the literary and legal source material used in this study and considers the cases of Augustus’ daughter and granddaughter as a backdrop to the legal and political thinking that follows. The remainder of the dissertation is divided according to women’s roles in criminal trials. Chapter two, encompassing the largest body of evidence, addresses the role of women as defendants, and this chapter is split into three thematic parts that concentrate on charges of adultery, treason, and other crimes. A recurring question is whether the defendants were indicted for reasons specific to them or the indictments were meant to injure their male family members politically. Analysis of these cases reveals that most of the accused women suffered harm without the damage being shared by their male family members. Chapter three considers that a handful of powerful women also filled the role of prosecutor, a role technically denied to them under the law. Resourceful and powerful imperial women like Messalina and Agrippina found ways to use criminal accusations to remove political enemies. Chapter four investigates women in the role of witnesses in criminal trials. -

Wiseman Prompted by Chrystina Häuber’s seminal work on the eastern part of the mons Oppius, this article offers a radical reappraisal of the evidence for the ‘gardens of Maecenas’. Some very long-standing beliefs about the location and nature of the horti Maecenatiani are shown to be unfounded; on the other hand, close reading of an unjustly neglected text provides some new and unexpected evidence for what they were used for. The main focus of the argument is on the relevance of the horti to the development of Roman performance culture. It is intended to contribute to the understanding of Roman social history, and the method used is traditionally empirical: to collect and present whatever evidence is available, to define as precisely as possible what that evidence implies, and to formulate a hypothesis consistent with those implications. THE PORTRAYAL OF THE GENERALS AND THE ARMIES IN TACITUS’ ANNALS. Elizabeth Mary Boldy Bachelor of Arts (Hons.1) A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics. ABSTRACT Tacitus began the Annals with the death of Augustus in order to emphasize the moment when the autocratic system of government he had established became a permanent fixture in the Roman state when it was passed on to his successors, the Julio-Claudian Emperors.1 Tacitus chose the annalistic form to present his history in order to record the major events of political, military and constitutional importance within these formative years of the empire.2 This thesis offers a historiographical study of Tacitus‟ Annals in order to demonstrate how he utilises the Roman army and its generals as a means of emphasising the political environment in these embryonic years of the empire. This study is valuable in that it shows how, by use of various literary devices, Tacitus gives his opinions of the emperors by contrasting their actions and behaviours with their generals and armies. His descriptions of res externae, the actions of the armies, is designed to counterbalance what he claimed was sorrowful res internae within the Roman state itself. Scholars‟ views on Tacitus qualities as an historian range from the belief that he was truthful and reliable to the view that the Annals was mostly a work of literature and of little value for historical fact. Woodman, Kajanto and Haynes argue that Tacitus‟ work was more a work of rhetorical invention, like that of the poets.3 Mellor likens him to such historical novelists as Tolstoy and George Eliot.4 Syme, Mendell and Martin express their belief that Tacitus was a reliable and honest historian.5 In this thesis, I examine Tacitus‟ style and language in order to show how his method of writing plays a crucial role in developing the themes of the Annals. -

N. S. Parker, 1986 ABSTRACT In the course of his reign, the Emperor Nero was married to three wives in succession. Since a number of women are known to have been politically active during the late Republic and early Empire, it is possible that Nero's wives also exerted political pressure on him. Relying primarily on the best source for the Neronian Principate, Tacitus' Annals XIII-XVI, this thesis will give an account of the evidence pre sented for the lives of the only two wives of Nero with whom Tacitus deals, Claudia Octavia and Poppaea Sabina. There follows, in addition, an estimation of Tacitus• judgment of their lives in light of his general view of women. VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED. Roman emperors liked to think of themselves as "gods," but it became apparent to many people that Nero was losing (or had already lost) his mind. As a result, it was extremely difficult for anyone to respect him as infallible. Among many other issues, Nero performed various theatrical works, in public. High-ranking citizens of Rome were appalled at this lack of imperial decorum. Tacitus provides some background: A spectacle, in which the prince exposed his frivolous talents, gave them ["thinking men"] the highest disgust. (Annals of Tacitus, Volume III, Book XVI, section V - see page 253.) The massive building projects Nero had ordered, after the great fire of 64 AD, were pushing the empire further and further toward financial ruin. Then Nero came-up with a tax scheme to solve his lack-of-money problem. Throughout the empire, the richest men would be forced to leave their entire estates to Nero when they died. Those death taxes would be used to fund the government's projects. There was another part to that imperial directive: Once the wills were changed, the men would be required to immediately commit suicide. In the history of the world, few rulers ever had the kind of absolute power which Nero had at this time of his life. But his quest for money, and his plan for rebuilding Rome, had drained the finances of all the provinces. -

Naked Power: The Phallus as an Apotropaic Symbol in the Images and Texts of Roman Italy Abstract Representations of the phallus abound in both the art and the literature of the first-century A.D. Roman world. On frescoes in both private homes and public buildings, on amulets, statues, etchings, tripods, drinking cups and vases, exaggerated phallic images, these purportedly apotropaic symbols protect the inhabitant, the passerby, the wearer, the user from outside evil. The contemporary Latin literature, Roman satire and elegy in particular (Catullus, Martial, Juvenal, Horace, Tibullus), and the Priapea, a collection of poems about the phallic god Priapus, offer descriptions of the phallus and its functions that both coincide with and differ from the material examples. This paper will investigate these correspondences and discrepancies between verbal and artistic representation, and, in particular, what these similarities and inconsistencies reveal about the public function of this private imagery in the contemporary culture of ancient Roman Italy. -

OCTAVIA AND ITS GENRE Octavia is the only complete Latin drama of historical subject which has come down to us. The title of the play given by the MSS is simply Octavia, but the drama is often referred to in modern secondary literature as Octavia praetexta, a practice which should be abandoned. The title heroine, Claudia Octauia, was the daughter of the emperor Claudius and of Valeria Messalina. Born in , she be- came Nero’s wife in , reportedly after being adopted into an unknown family to avoidrumours of incest within the imperial family. In legends of this period, her name always appears with- out the patronymic Claudia. The name Octauia, however, was hardly that of an adoptive gens. Rather than a gentilicium,itmust have been an inherited cognomen of the imperial family; like her older sister’s name, Antonia, it was probably given to stress the link with a previous generation of Julio-Claudian women. The play dramatizes the events of three days in June (a chronological fiction: see next section), culminating in Nero’s divorce from Octavia, his subsequent marriage to Poppaea, and, lastly, Octavia’s deportation to Pandateria. The normal way of quoting dramatic titles is, e.g., Accius (in) Bruto or Aeneadis. Titles in the form (proper noun) + tragoedia, comoedia, fabula, in either order, are found: cf. Plin. Nat. Sophocles poeta in fabula Triptolemo (other instances of this appositive use in titles are given in TLL vi., s.v.
