LADB Article Id: 78623 ISSN: 1054-8890 Huichol Indians Gain Protected Status for Sacred Lands in San Luis Potosí by Carlos Navarro Category/Department: Mexico Published: 2012-05-30 Indigenous-rights and environmental activists scored a major victory when the Mexican government denied a permit for Canada’s First Majestic Silver Corporation to develop a mine in the ancestral lands of the Huichol Indians, also known as the Wixárika. The decision was symbolic because the Canadian company had already announced its intention not to proceed with the mining project. The move opened the door for the Secretaría de Gobernación (SEGOB) to declare the area known as Wirikuta in San Luis Potosí part of a wider protected area for the Huichol. The specific location designated for protection is known as Cerro Quemado, a mountain where the Huichol believe the sun was born. The Huichol, who are scattered across several states in central Mexico, still conduct ceremonies and make an annual pilgrimage to the Wirikuta reserve near the town of Real de Catorce. -

SEPTIEMBRE 2014 PRESENTACIÓN Javier Maisterrena Zubirán Programa de Estudios Antropológicos El Colegio de San Luis El esfuerzo de conocer y específicamente de conocer_se del equipo Respuesta Alternativa en su territorio es necesario valorarlo. Asimismo hemos de resaltar esta relación con la alteridad, ese encuentro con el otro que llega, que habla otra lengua que no conoce el lugar que como jornalero contratado llega a darle vida a la tierra porque “nolequedadeotra”, porque necesita dinero para vivir, porque la sociedad mexicana, el Estado, el gobierno, los megaproyectos mineros o energéticos transnacionales lo dejaron sin tierra y sin oportunidad para vivir por sí mismo y acude al extraño lugar del altiplano potosino buscando la vida y dando vida a las plantas y hortalizas de las agroindustrias que lo contratan. Son hombres invisibles que se pueden llamar “Pedro, María, Juan y José”, como dice una canción, son anónimos que llegan con familias que no salen sus nombres en los periódicos ni en los programas de televisión o radio –como la de los empresarios o la de los políticos-, esas pocas familias son unos cuantos de los millones de habitantes que somos, pero de esos millones que todos somos también somos iguales o semejantes a esos unos también invisibles o invisibilizados, que trabajan y hacen posible la vida en muchas de sus formas. Los empresarios y el gobierno hacen una especie de acto de magia con el cual además de invisibilizar a las familias, convierten las vidas de las plantas y las personas en dinero. -
