A HISTORY OF THE THREE CUPS, HARWICH, ESSEX PART FIVE – RECENT RESEARCH, ERRATA AND SOURCES This history of the Three Cups, Harwich, Essex has taken more than a year to complete and thus, as the individual parts were published, feedback was received and further discoveries made. In this penultimate Part, I bring together that additional information which, although out of synch with the previous four Parts, is in, more or less, chronological order. James Boswell and Dr. Samuel Johnson In an article titled ‘Dr. Johnson in Essex’ published Essex Countryside magazine in August 1969 writer Molly Tatchell revealed that, early in the morning of 5th August 1763, Dr. Johnson and Boswell left London in a stage-coach bound for Harwich. Boswell (pictured) was setting out on a grand tour of Europe and Dr. Johnson, apparently much to Boswell’s delight, had offered to accompany his young friend to Harwich to see him off on the boat for Holland. They arrived at Harwich the next day and ‘dined at the inn by themselves’, Tatchell stating that the inn was ‘almost certainly the Three Cups’ which was ‘at that time the best known inn in Harwich, and had a large share of the trade of those stopping overnight before embarking for the Continent.’ Boswell apparently remarked that Harwich was ‘so dull a place.’ Activities, Clubs and Auctions During the long period of time the Three Cups served the people of Harwich and visitors to the town it, like many other public houses, was utilised by many different clubs and organisations. As we have seen in earlier Parts, a number of civic functions and special receptions for visiting noble folk were held at the Three Cups as were auctions of property, farm equipment and animals. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Open Research Online Finding Wroth’s Loughton Hall SUSIE WEST The Open University Lady Mary Sidney Wroth, daughter of Penshurst Place, Kent, made her marital home at Loughton Hall, Essex, and remained there as a widow until her own death in 1651.1 The house was burnt down in 1836, and little is known of its appearance or history. This is a loss in two major respects. Firstly, as the home of a major literary figure whose work draws heavily on her life, we might expect that the home environment she created was both shaped by and informed her evocation of place and space in her work. This is not to suggest that literary work can be read back into the built environment, but Loughton Hall should take its place amongst the houses within the Sidney circle: Penshurst Place, Wilton House and Houghton Conquest House, for example. There is more to say about its landscape setting. Secondly, Wroth had a role in remodeling the old house, and there is a tantalizing but unproven association with Inigo Jones, known to Wroth from the Court. This provides the second theme for this discussion, the Court and the classical tradition in architecture. The early decades of the seventeenth century in England are distinguished by what might be called a ‘classical turn’ in building, in the form of heightened awareness of and interest in the theory and practice of architecture as inherited from Italy and a Roman past. -

Weather and climate-related hazards are responsible for large monetary losses, material damages and societal consequences. Quantifying related risks is therefore an important societal task, particularly in view of future climate change. The past record of events plays a key role in this context. Historically, it was the only source of information and was maintained and passed on within cultures of memory. Today, new numerical techniques can again make use of historical weather data to simulate impacts quantitatively. In this paper we outline how historical environmental data can be used today in climate risk assessment by (i) developing and validating numerical model chains, (ii) providing a large statistical sample which can be directly exploited to estimate hazards and to model present risks, and (iii) establishing „worst-case“ events which are relevant references in the present or future. -

Ex-Hurricane Ophelia 16 October 2017 On 16 October 2017 ex-hurricane Ophelia brought very strong winds to western parts of the UK and Ireland. This date fell on the exact 30th anniversary of the Great Storm of 16 October 1987. Ex-hurricane Ophelia (named by the US National Hurricane Center) was the second storm of the 2017-2018 winter season, following Storm Aileen on 12 to 13 September. The strongest winds were around Irish Sea coasts, particularly west Wales, with gusts of 60 to 70 Kt or higher in exposed coastal locations. Impacts The most severe impacts were across the Republic of Ireland, where three people died from falling trees (still mostly in full leaf at this time of year). There was also significant disruption across western parts of the UK, with power cuts affecting thousands of homes and businesses in Wales and Northern Ireland, and damage reported to a stadium roof in Barrow, Cumbria. Flights from Manchester and Edinburgh to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland were cancelled, and in Wales some roads and railway lines were closed. Ferry services between Wales and Ireland were also disrupted. Storm Ophelia brought heavy rain and very mild temperatures caused by a southerly airflow drawing air from the Iberian Peninsula. Weather data Ex-hurricane Ophelia moved on a northerly track to the west of Spain and then north along the west coast of Ireland, before sweeping north-eastwards across Scotland. The sequence of analysis charts from 12 UTC 15 to 12 UTC 17 October shows Ophelia approaching and tracking across Ireland and Scotland. -

It gives each organisation an opportunity to maximise interoperability and integration in the future, to maintain and improve service delivery and increase public confidence by working more closely together while recognising the importance of maintaining their individual identity. History and recent experience tell us that the most constant, and predictable, hazard in Europe is that of widespread flooding with storms, often with hurricane force winds, slamming the coastal area and causing flooding inland as well. The modern world is seemingly plagued with the scourges of the Old Testament: earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes and cyclones, wildfires, avalanches and landslides. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, have perished globally in natural hazards, falling victim to extreme forces of nature. None of these perils are new to civilization. Both the Gilgamesh Epic1 and the Old Testament talk of epic floods.2 The Egyptians faced ten plagues. The Minoans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans experienced earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and pestilence. A cyclone destroyed Kublai Khan’s invasion fleet of Japan on August 15, 1281. A massive earthquake in Shaanxi Province, China on January 23, 1556 is estimated to have killed 830,000 persons. A discussion of extreme hazards often involves a common misconception of 100 year floods, 500 year floods, 200 year returns, and similar periods. A mistaken belief is that a “100 year” flood only occurs once a century. The measurement period is a statistical average over an extended period of time. It is not a means of forecasting. It means that on average a storm of that magnitude will occur once in a hundred years, but these storms could be back to back. -

From here the route heads through rolling countryside and picturesque villages, to the little port of Mistley, haunt of Matthew Hopkins - ‘The Witchfinder General’. From 1645-1646, he was employed to hunt out the area’s witches. The route returns to Harwich via the River Stour with its views and riverside hamlets.
