This step has been taken because the "S" Range 25mm figures are now so popular it is impractical carrying two sixes of figures very close in scale, but with the 25mm detail we have no alternative other than discontinuing the HO/00 listings. The March 1971 Catalogue is available at l8p and this shows the figures now available in the 25mm range. • A History of the Presentation of American Football in England and Germany
FROM VIOLENCE TO PARTY: A HISTORY OF THE PRESENTATION OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL IN ENGLAND AND GERMANY DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lars Dzikus, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Melvin L. Adelman, Adviser Professor Sarah K. Fields Adviser Professor William J. Morgan College of Education ABSTRACT While scholars have widely discussed the cultural, economic, and political influence of the United States on Europe in general and Germany in particular, the realm of sports has received surprisingly little attention. This study ties in with the scholarly debate about Americanization and / or globalization that started in the first half the 1990s. It examines the presentation of American football in England from the 1890s through World War II as well as in Germany following the war to the present day. The study discusses what non-Americans wrote about football and what their countrymen and –women read about it. The study draws on English and German newspapers and magazines, particularly the London Times and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. It also examines the role American military, radio, television, and movies played in the diffusion of American football. In the case of Germany, the researcher draws on extensive qualitative interviews with several of the “founding fathers” of American football in Germany as well as his own experiences in the sport. The work demonstrates that American football arrived in Germany on a field that had been prepared by a three-hundred-year process of imagining Amerika.

Chair: John Rury Suzanne Rice Ebenezer Obadare David Roediger Date Defended: 16 May 2019 ii The dissertation committee for Howard Graham certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The View from the Stadium: The University of Kansas’ Memorial Stadium Chair: John Rury Date Approved: 26 July 2019 iii Abstract The View from the Stadium: The University of Kansas’ Memorial Stadium, is a meditation over the college football stadium movement of the post-World War I era. The study incorporates higher education history, intellectual and social history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, African and African American history, Indigenous Nations history, whiteness studies, geography, sports history, and political philosophy. This dissertation seeks to establish the social and political backgrounds that inform the stadium movement of the 1920s. The aim is to understand the factors that influenced how KU’s Memorial Stadium (1921) was conceptualized, completed and subsequently. It is a conceptual intervention focused on stadium space and use, and contributes to the scholarship of higher education and sport. iv Acknowledgements I wish to thank my wife, Amanda, and our children, Russell and Ruby, for their support that made this dissertation possible. If there were a dedication, it would be for Amanda who sacrifices every day for our family and me.
