Media Contacts: For Immediate Release Brooks Addicott, 435.658.3456 December 3, 2008 [email protected] Amy McGee, 310.492.2333 [email protected] 2009 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FILMS IN COMPETITION Festival Celebrates 25 Years of Independent Filmmaking and Cinematic Storytelling Park City, UT—Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the 25th Sundance Film Festival. In addition to the four Competition categories, the Festival presents films in five out-of-competition sections to be announced tomorrow. The 2009 Sundance Film Festival runs January 15-25 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. The complete list of films is available at www.sundance.org/festival. "This year's films are not narrowly defined. Instead we have a blurring of genres, a crossing of boundaries: geographic, generational, socio-economic and the like," said Geoffrey Gilmore, Director, Sundance Film Festival. "The result is both an exhilarating and emotive Festival in which traditional mythologies are suspended, discoveries are made, and creative storytelling is embraced." "Audiences may be surprised by how much emotion this year's films evoke," said John Cooper, Director of Programming, Sundance Film Festival. "We are seeing the next evolution of the independent film movement where films focus on storytelling with a sense of connection and purpose." For the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, 118 feature-length films were selected including 88 world premieres, 18 North American premieres, and 4 U.S. premieres representing 21 countries with 42 first-time filmmakers, including 28 in competition. -

John Simm ~ 47 Screen Credits and more The eldest of three children, actor and musician John Ronald Simm was born on 10 July 1970 in Leeds, West Yorkshire and grew up in Nelson, Lancashire. He attended Edge End High School, Nelson followed by Blackpool Drama College at 16 and The Drama Centre, London at 19. He lives in North London with his wife, actress Kate Magowan and their children Ryan, born on 13 August 2001 and Molly, born on 9 February 2007. Simm won the Best Actor award at the Valencia Film Festival for his film debut in Boston Kickout (1995) and has been twice BAFTA nominated (to date) for Life On Mars (2006) and Exile (2011). He supports Man U, is "a Beatles nut" and owns seven guitars. John Simm quotes I think I can be closed in. I can close this outer shell, cut myself off and be quite cold. In the afternoon, they are going to meet a certain Mr. Bebe. Găbiţa is pregnant, abortion is illegal and neither of them have passed through something like this before. 4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days belongs to a larger project called: Tales from the Golden Age – a subjective history of communism in Romania told through its urban legends. The projectʼs aim is to talk about that period with no direct reference to communism but only through different stories focused on personal options in a time of misfortunes that people had to live like normal times. -
The Politics of Accuracy in Judging Global Warming Films

The politics of accuracy in judging global warming films Abstract In 2007, two documentaries about global warming – An Inconvenient Truth and The Great Global Warming Swindle – became subject to legal and regulatory challenges in the UK. This paper examines the limitations of appeals to accuracy in these two cases. Rather than terminating debate, the discourse of accuracy engenders a representational regress which serves only to generate further controversy. Accuracy claims become particularly problematic in the case of documentary film where the role of the visual image must be accounted for. In particular, the ambiguous figural status of the image in science documentaries makes accuracy an inadequate means by which to judge such films. I suggest that rather than being considered in isolation, accuracy needs to be understood as one of several textual features which together construct the truthfulness of a text. The integrity of the text emerges as the most meaningful concept for evaluating media representations of climate change. Keywords: media, documentary film, accuracy, rhetoric, global warming. Introduction In 2007, two high-profile films about climate change became the subject of formal proceedings in the UK. An Inconvenient Truth , featuring former US Vice-President Al Gore, was the subject of a High Court case regarding its distribution in schools by the UK Government. The documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle , written and produced by filmmaker Martin Durkin, was examined by the broadcasting regulator Ofcom following numerous complaints after it was broadcast on television. In both cases, many of the subsequent media reports implied that the adjudication had found against the theory of anthropogenic global warming. -

Imitand viata si nu cartile, ancorati in realitatea cotidiana, cu bune, dar mai ales cu rele, jocul interpretativ al tinerilor actori romani imprumuta mult din jocul american, care este mai putin teatral si mai mult real. Anamaria Marinca Nascuta la Iasi, din mama violonista si tata profesor de teatru, a studiat vioara dar a renuntat in favoarea actoriei. A absolvit Universitatea de Arta George Enescu din Iasi iar prima sa mare sansa a venit la 25 de ani cand a dat un casting pentru interpretarea rolului Elenei Visinescu, victima a unei retele de carne vie in mini serialul „Sex Traffic”. Acest film i-a adus titlul de „Cea mai bun actrita” in 2005, la British Academy Television Awards si i- a dat sansa sa se faca recunoscuta international, doi ani mai tarziu, in filmul “Tinerete fara tinerete”, regizat de Francis Ford Coppola. -

INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION Christina Stojanova The New Romanian cinema exploded onto the international film festival scene in the mid-2000s, catching audiences and critics completely by surprise. And if the ‘Un Certain Regard’ Best Film at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for The Death of Mr Lăzărescu could be ignored as a happenstance, the numerous awards that followed in quick succession for The Paper Will Be Blue, Ryna and How I Spent the End of the World suggested a tendency. The Camera D’Or at the 2006 Cannes for 12:08 East of Bucharest and especially the dual success at Cannes 2007 – Un Certain Regard Award for Cristian Nemescu’s California Dreamin’ and especially the Palm D’Or for Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days – sealed the rise to prominence of this hitherto obscure national cinema. It took however another couple of years for critics to finally agree that a ‘new wave has finally arrived at the Black Sea’ (Scott 2008), and to admit that ‘Romanian filmmaking is now perceived as the hotbed of a fresh, expressive, and pertinent cinematic renewal’ (Kaceanov 2008). A few years later, such sentiments would become a common media occurrence, corroborated by a blogger, who wrote that Romanian cinema ‘never ceases to surprise and impress with the rigour of its execution, its intelligence and moral dimensions’ (Père: 2012). Almost fifteen years later, with more than two hundred prestigious awards for forty or so notable films by world-renowned directors like Cristi Puiu, Cristian Mungiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Cristian Nemescu, Radu Jude, Radu Muntean, Tudor Giurgiu, Călin Peter Netzer, Cătălin Mitulescu, Nae Caranfil and others, 1 STOJANOVA 9781474442649 PRINT.indd 1 23/11/2018 09:52 CHRISTINA STOJANOVA Romanian cinema remains securely in the limelight of the international film festival circuit. -
