The film is based on popular Country Music singer/songwriter/author Jimmy Wayne’s record-breaking song and book by the same name – all of which are inspired by his childhood experience of receiving his first guitar through the Angel Tree Program. The UP Original Movie Paper Angels will make its world television premiere on UP on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 7:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST. Produced by Annuit Coeptis Entertainment II in association with Odyssey Networks and Johnson Production Group, Inc., the film is directed by David Winning (Nov. 30’s UP Original Movie The Tree That Saved Christmas, The Town That Came A-Courtin’) from an adapted screenplay by Bryar Freed-Golden (UP’s Love Finds You In Sugarcreek). The ensemble cast also includes Rustin Gresiuk (Suspension, “Fringe”), Farryn Van Humbeck (Big Eyes, “Supernatural”), Russell Porter (Come Together, “Arrow”), Danny Wattley (Watchmen, “Rogue”), Kendra Anderson (Horns, “Copper”), Burkely Duffield (UP’s My Mother’s Future Husband, “House of Anubis”) and Adrian Dorval (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Do You Know Me?). In Paper Angels, abused wife Lynn (Josie Bissett) leaves her alcoholic husband Darryl (Russell Porter), with her two kids, Thomas (Rustin Gresiuk) and Sara (Farryn Van Humbeck), and the trio move to another town where she struggles to make ends meet working as a waitress to support the family. In that same town, we meet Kevin (Matthew Settle), who is helping his wife Jenny (Kendra Anderson) through a difficult pregnancy with twins, while fighting to keep his marketing & design company afloat. Thomas starts at his new school and becomes the target of a bully, Vic (Burkely Duffield), who is threatened by how well Thomas plays basketball. Unable to join the high school team, Thomas goes to the community center where he meets Kevin and the two of them become unlikely friends through pickup basketball games. Little do they know the tremendous impact they will have on each other’s families this Christmas through The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. Inspired by Country Music star Jimmy Wayne’s own experience with the Angel Tree Program and his hit holiday song featured in the movie, “Paper Angels,” and the same-titled book by Wayne with Travis Thrasher. Wayne has also written and performed two new Christmas songs, entitled “Forgotten Angels” and “Christmas Doesn’t Have To Be Over,” for the film. “Led by ‘Gossip Girl’s’ Matthew Settle and ‘Melrose Place’s’ Josie Bissett, Paper Angels is more than just a heartwarming, compelling Christmas movie,” Sophia Kelley, svp, programming, UP. “It is also an opportunity to spotlight the outstanding charitable work done by The Salvation Army and its Angel Tree Program for children and families in need each Christmas.” Jimmy Wayne's new novel, Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way, was published in October and is currently on the New York Times Bestseller list. Written by Wayne with Ken Abraham, the autobiography includes a chapter ("Bumping into Angels") that reveals the real-life events that inspired the song; his first book, Paper Angels, written with Travis Thrasher; and this UP Original Movie. Throughout the month of November, the Salvation Army’s Angel Trees will arrive in local malls and other locations coast- to-coast. About Jimmy Wayne Jimmy Wayne is a former foster kid turned country music singer/songwriter whose songs and story highlight his mission to bring awareness to kids who age out of the foster system and become homeless. With hits such as “Put Your Hand In Mine,” “I Love You This Much” and “Paper Angels,” he released “Do You Believe Me Now,” his biggest hit to date for which he earned the millionaire award for having 100,000,000 radio spins in America. In 2009, Wayne toured with Brad Paisley and recorded Sara Smile with Hall & Oates. In 2010, he walked halfway across America to raise awareness for kids aging out of the system. The next year, Wayne became CASA’s national spokesperson and released the novel Paper Angels. In 2012, he helped get the bill passed extending the age of foster care to 21 in both California and Tennessee. Wayne's new autobiography novel, Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found the Way, was published in October 2014. He lives in Nashville and continues to raise awareness for kids by writing, singing, and speaking. About The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's highest profile Christmas efforts. The Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia, shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time. The program got its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on Hallmark greeting cards that featured pictures of angels. Through The Salvation Army Angel Tree program, necessities and Christmas gifts are provided for disadvantaged children from infants to age 14 and for senior citizens 60+. Angel Trees are placed in area stores during the first part of November. Each tree is adorned with angel tags containing an angel's age, gender, clothing sizes and gift wishes. Community members select an "angel," purchase items for that child or senior based on the information on the tag, and then return the gifts to the store where the angel was chosen. In 2013, The Salvation Army provided nearly one million children with Christmas joy. In order to qualify, applicants must meet income guidelines and not be receiving aid from other Christmas programs. Angel Tree Registration began in October. For more information on the Angel Tree Program please contact your local Salvation Army or log onto www.salvationarmyusa.org. The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in London in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for more than 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar The Salvation Army spends is used to support those services in 5,000 communities nationwide. COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.
